About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Mountaintop Experience offers a comfortable authentic cabin atmosphere and a wonderful mountain-top setting with spectacular panoramic fifteen mile views into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. If incredible mountain views are at the top of your 'must have' list, this cabin will not let you down.

From the back of the cabin no other cabins are visible. It's amazing what lengths some owners go through to take pictures that appear to show privacy! We have been burned several times in this way.

About Lori Thompson

Owners Charles, Debbie, Jeff, Lori, and Charlotte Thompson

Charlie, Jeff, and Lori, all engineers, appreciate the structural integrity of Mountaintop Experience. Debbie, a teacher, can't stop marvalling at the view. Charlotte, our thirteen-year old enjoys the view, the comfy sofas and the Wi-Fi most of all. When she was younger her favorite thing was the hot tub. She would always make sure to remember her goggles. All professional hot tub swimmers wear goggles!

Lori Thompson purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Lori Thompson chose Tennessee

My husband and I having been visiting the Great Smoky Mountains for twenty-eight years. We've stayed in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Walden's Creek, Townsend, and Wears Valley. We love them all. Since we live in Knoxville, several weekend trips a year, even on the spur of the minute, are not out of the question. We've stayed in many different cabins. The problem was that there was always something that could have been better. A cabin with a great view would offer no privacy. One with privacy had no view. We wanted a cabin with as many amenities as possible that we could count on consistently. A 'known quantity' if you will. Of all the cabins we've stayed in over the years, none can hold a candle to Mountaintop Experience. Previously, it was named A Wilderness Lodge. However, since it isn't in the wilderness and it isn't a lodge, we changed the name to Mountaintop Experience. We hope you have a wonderful experience on our portion of this mountaintop.

What makes this cabin unique

The design of Mountaintop Experience is ingenious. With virtually the entire back of the house being windows, the mountain view is the centerpiece of the cabin. You can simply sit on the sofa and enjoy the incredible views. You can easily forget that anyone else is around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks so much for opening up your amazing cabin to our family for vacation. This was our first trip to the area. The cabin was perfect for us by way of space and layout and location. The views were breathtaking. The kids loved the hot tub and game room. We were fortunate to spend time zip lining, white water rafting (Pigeon Forge), hiking Abrams and Laurel Falls, viewing Cades Cove and Newfoundland Gap/ Appalachian Trail and riding the Alpine Coaster. We had a very memorable trip in a spectacular cabin with gracious host.

Wonderful trip - wonderful cabin

  • 5 of 5

Eight of us (two families with 4 adults and 4 kids) stayed at this cabin for a week in mid-August. Lori (owner) was quick to respond to any/all questions. The cabin was exactly as described, if not nicer than the listing. We often bring along some of our own things when we rent like a nice non-stick skillet and good kitchen knives, but found there were plenty of skillets and knives in good condition and we didn't even use ours. The kitchen was FULLY stocked, including things like extra spices, and aluminum foil. The beds/bedrooms were comfortable as were the couches (where two of our kids slept - they ended up not using pull out sofa). There were plenty of extra blankets and pillows.

We all absolutely loved the hot tub and video game machine (60+ games like pac-man, galaga, etc that we only found out about when we arrived). The views speak for themselves, and we never tired of them, though we mostly just sat out in the morning or evening as it was too hot during the day. We did one or two hikes everyday (alum cave trail was our favorite). All the hikes are pretty crowded, so be prepared for that. We had several days of off-and-on rainy weather, and we hiked anyway, and there were still lots of people, so I can only imagine on a nice day how busy they would be. There are bear warning signs at the bottom of the hill where the cabin is located, but we never saw any. We did see bears 3 different times in Cades Cove though. A momma and cubs all 3 times. Once was very early on Wednesday when we rode bikes on the loop (it's closed to car traffic from 8am-10am). We rented bikes and I'd suggest getting there at 6:30 or the bikes will be gone.

It was an absolutely perfect vacation and you won't go wrong renting this cabin. If I had to find anything that could be improved, it would be the layout of the game room downstairs. The pool table is between the sofa and tv making it so there is really nowhere to sit when watching tv. Our kids figured out how to play wii though without a problem (we brought our own games and controllers), and when we all watched a movie, we just did it upstairs.

The swimming pool is located a ways down the hill and though we never used it, it looked very nice and inviting. Only on the Saturday when we arrived did it look crowded, all other times it looked pretty empty.

As I said, it was a wonderful trip and a wonderful cabin!!

Beautiful home and beautiful view!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week for some relaxation. It was perfect. Well maintained and a nicely stocked kitchen for preparing meals at home. Close to the park and away from the more touristy areas which is what we were hoping for.

Beautiful Home with gorgeous views!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights at Mountaintop Experience and couldn't have been happier with our lodging. The views are spectacular and you really have the feeling that you have the whole mountain to yourself. The house was a great setup for our party of 6. Lots of spices, paper items etc were provided in the kitchen which made cooking easier. It was in a quieter part of the Smokies which is exactly what we wanted. It was an easy drive to all of the hiking that we did, and the hot tub afterwards couldn't have felt better. I don't know who enjoyed the 80's arcade style game in the basement more, (Galaga was the favorite), my 50 year old husband or teen boys. The drive is steep up to the house, and we found we preferred the straighter, steeper route vs all the switchbacks. We all said we would stay here again without question, and wish we had planned to stay longer.

Mountaintop Experience is a Hidden Jewel in the Smoky's!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I could not have been more pleased with our selection of Lori's cabin home near the Smoky Mt. National Park for our 6 night family vacation. The homeowners had thought of every detail to make sure that we had what we needed for our stay in their mountaintop cabin. Did I mention the incredible view? It is with mild reservation that I write such a complimentary review. It will likely just increase the demand for this property which would make it more difficult or expensive to acquire this rental next time we vacation near the Smoky's. However, honesty is always the best policy.

Living room with floor to ceiling windows and two large decks all with amazing scenic views, hot tub, pool table, gas grill, arcade games, etc. We could have remained at the property our entire vacation. The cabin (aka very nice mountain home) is not too far from a couple of grocery options as well as a Dollar General Store so replenishing supplies is not a problem. For those who like to hike, the cabin is not far from a lesser used park entrance.

Lori was always timely and helpful in replies to my multiple inquiries. She even mailed our deposit back within a few days as well.

In summary, we are grateful the homeowners have allowed us to enjoy their wonderful Smoky Mt. cabin. We highly recommend her property without reservation and hope to stay there again in the future.

Mountaintop Oasis

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 nights in May at Mountaintop Experience. The house was immaculate and the views were spectacular. We loved how private the house was. We spent 5 days exploring Great Smoky Mountain National Park - some of our favorites were Laurel Falls Trail and Cades Cove. We went back to Cades Cove around 7 pm and saw two sets of Mama Bears with their cubs! The house was incredibly well stocked and comfortable. I can't say enough nice things about it. :-) I'm looking forward to visiting again in the future!

True "mountain top experience!"

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is beautifully decorated and the mountain view is incredible.

We enjoyed the privacy on both the upper and lower decks, and looking at the at the stars while in the hot tub was a highlight. The cabin was super clean and the kitchen had all the essentials you'd need for cooking.

We loved the way the cabin was set up, with the master bedroom on the top level and two other bedrooms downstairs. It was wonderful having

2 1/2 bathrooms. With five women, that extra 1/2 bath was very helpful to have.

We found the switchback roads up to the cabin pretty scary, and we preferred the steeper, more direct side to get up and down.

The owner was pleasant to work with and was very accessible if you need to contact.

Being there in mid-March, many of the area restaurants had limited hours. But we had a wonderful breakfast at Hillbilly's and 2 delicious dinners and ice cream at the Italian restaurant called Geppettos.

There are some great little country stores and gift shops nearby on Wears Valley Rd, including one with a big sign boasting fresh-made kettle corn. Stop and get some!!

Access to the Smoky Mountain Natl Park was very easy from the cabin.

Cades Cove was a great day trip, and we drove back and forth to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg several times. It was nice to be away from the traffic and congestion of the main towns.

We enjoyed nearby Metcalf Bottoms and the short hike to the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse and the Walker Sisters Cabin, as suggested by the cabin owner.

I'd suggest researching the area before your trip, so you can plan out your adventures. There is so much to see and do, but don't forget to schedule some time to just relax and enjoy the quiet serenity of the cabin.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for us. I think these reviews are very important to most people. I'm so glad you all had a great girls trip! I try to do that as often as I can. I'm very sorry for the water problem your first night. I'm glad we were able to take care of it early the next day. I can't understand how the hot tub guy can't remember to turn that faucet off! I appreciate you being so understanding while we took care of the problem. We are so very conscientious of guests' needs and comfort and we try hard to keep everything maintained and up to date. We are currently looking for another hot tub maintenance company! I hope you all stay with us next time you come back!
