If you are looking for something off the beaten path, you have found it! Out at the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the cottage is located at St. Margaret's village, in Bay St. Lawrence. From the 8x28 foot front deck you have a panoramic, unobstructed, undeveloped view as the sun sets into the ocean. In season, you can enjoy the local lobster or snow crab caught in the bay in front of you.
Not far off the Cabot Trail, the cottage is a good base for golf at Highland Links in Ingonish (one of the top-rated courses in the world), whale watching or deep sea fishing from the nearby fisherman's wharf or the Hike the Highlands Festival. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is just 10 miles away where there are hiking trails and other activities in the summer. Our family spots at least one moose and one bear at this park every year! It is a thrill for the kids!
Right in the village is a friendly community center with internet access (as well as ping pong for the kids and a basketball hoop). There is a local grocery with all the basics. Right near the community center is an ice cream stand that is great for a quick dinner as well.
It is a birdwatchers paradise. Watch the eagles soar, the guillemots fly in and out of the cliffs below, or the gannets dive into the ocean from the cottage. You might even see the occasional pod of whales in the bay while you sit relaxing or reading on the deck.

A very comfortable cottage, well equipped and beautifully situated beside the ocean (and closer to the sea than is apparent from the photo). A wonderful place both to relax and to enjoy the mix of easy and more challenging walks in the vicinity; and the weather was warmer and drier here than in England! Very grateful to the most helpful owner, prompt and obliging in every respect.
Very nice cabin.. perfect for 2 people... quiet and away from it all.. just what we wanted!!
The kitchen could be a bit better equipped (we love cooking at home!) and furniture could do with an update but ignoring this, very very nice place to be for a week!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this little cottage on the tip of Cape Breton. The cottage itself has all the basics and is charming. As others have said, it's the front deck and ocean view that makes the more remote location worthwhile. If you enjoy the outdoors--hiking, whale watching, kayaking--this is a great location. There's plenty of great hiking both in and outside of the national park. You can also easily spend a day wandering through all the little towns in the area and finding the out of the way beaches. We would definitely suggest purchasing your park pass for the week on the way up so that you don't have to do any long drives before you can start hiking. The cottage is a great place to come home to at the end of each daily adventure. The only things we would recommend would be investing in a couple of nice comfy Adirondack/Muskoka style chairs for the deck and a small outdoor gas grill for quick meals.
If you're happy to sit on the deck and spend endless hours watching the ever-changing ocean, this place is for you. Extraordinarily diverse flora and fauna. We ate freshly caught (by me!) fish most days and the cabin was clean and comfortable. Thank you for sharing this little patch of paradise with us.
Words and pictures just can't capture how beautiful and spectacular the views are from this cottage. Very clean and well maintained cottage. Just be prepared for your breath to be taken away as you approach this cabin. Great little places to eat near by. Very friendly and nice people at the Hut and Oshan whale tours. I can't say enough great thinks about the surrounding communities, the people, the cottage and it's beautiful scenery. Spectacular hiking trails near by. Great communication with Katy(owner) as well. I'm looking forward to booking our next week.
We loved our stay at this wonderful little cottage - it was everything we could have hoped for, and more! The house was well maintained, clean and absolutely perfect. The view off the back deck was unbelievably awesome. Bay St Lawrence is a charmer of a town - and really great hiking is easily accessible in the area. The hosts were also great - communicative, responsive and detailed with the instructions and directions. We would absolutely recommend this place without hesitation to anyone looking for an amazing Cape Breton get away.
PS - for those Canadians - we saw mention of no cell service in an earlier review but we had full LTE on both Telus and Bell networks, FYI.
We arrived late at night and were not able to truly take in the wonder of this location until the next morning and despite the heavy winds and fog that set in that morning, we were amazed by the natural beauty that surrounded us! The following days were much more clear. We awoke to the sight of lobsterman hauling and the waves crashing - our 22 month old son loved watching the boats 😊. We ventured around the area to beaches, trails and other points of interest. We even had plenty of room around the cottage to run around with our son and burn off his extra energy! We enjoyed starting and ending our day on the porch, taking it all in! The accommodations were as promised; clean and welcoming, as were the locals. This was our first trip to NS/cape Breton and we have fallen in love! We can't wait for our next trip and without question would look to book this cottage again!
Great location to stay for the Hike the Highlands Festival or Celtic Colours! Just 25 minutes off the Cabot Trail!
