About Mike, reservations manager

I have lived in Kyoto since 1997, and in this location on the Kamo riverside since 2001. Originally from the US, several years after starting my teaching career in Colorado, I relocated to Kyoto. I have been teaching, studying, and enjoying the culture here for many years and would be happy to share some of that insider information with you if you stay in our weekly rental guest cottage.

Mike, reservations manager purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Mike, reservations manager chose Sakyo Ward

There is nothing in Kyoto comparable to this location on the riverside.

What makes this cottage unique

Convenience, peace and quiet, views, and access to everything.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for about 5 nights and we totally loved it. We didnt get to meet Mike but we did meet Yuko and we totally loved her. She was extremely nice and helpful. The space was just right for the two of us and possibly more people can stay, there was a loft with futons. We recommend this place to anyone who would like to get a feel of living in Kyoto and being a local. It's a bit out of the way from the touristy areas but we had no problem getting around (Demachiyanagi Station is a short walk that will take you to Gion-shijo) Overall this was a great place. Don't hesitate to book here, you won't be disappointed. Thank you Mike and Yuko.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review Jen, and I'm sorry that I was out of town and busy with work during most of your time in Kyoto. You are correct that the location and house are really unique, all of our visitors love walking out directly onto the riverside. Although downtown is ~15 minutes away by bike, there are good bicycle rental places just down at Demachiyanaggi station, and the Subway or bus directly to downtown is also a short walk. Good luck with your future travels and we would love to host you again if you come to Kyoto another time.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, we are happy that you enjoyed the unique riverside location of the Kamo Cottage. Complete privacy and right on the river, yet still walking distance to the shops, subway, and Demachiyanggi train station. We would love to host you or your family/friends another time. -Mike

Lovely little cottage by the river

  • 5 of 5

This small cottage is just at the back of the owner's house. Mike and Yuko are very welcoming and know the area well so can help with advice on places to go. I was a lone traveller and it was very good for my needs. It would also be very comfortable for a couple and even a small family as there is one large bed and a couple of futons up the stairs. I liked the location, the riverside setting is lovely and you have easy access to the downtown area from Demachiyanagi subway station and the subway and bus services will get you wherever you need to go. Check with the owners before you go how to locate the property as the website does not give an accurate location. I would recommend this cottage as a very good base for exploring Kyoto and its local area.

We arrived in Kyoto during silver week and the place was fully booked but we managed to find this great place north of the center in a peaceful location by the river. We enjoyed the place and the kitchenette. Mike and co were really nice and gave us good advice of what to do in and around Kyoto. A great base for exploring and tube/train options less than 10 mins away. Good places to buy groceries less than 10 mins away too.

Wifi was great. Good to have the use of the washing machine too.

If we come back to Kyoto, we would definitely stay here again.

Kamo Cottage, Kyoto Japan

  • 5 of 5

Mike and Yuko’s Kamo Cottage is ideally located for those wanting to explore Kyoto. The river view and self-contained accommodations make for a great base. Bus and subway stops are located within easy walking distance and provide easy access to the Shinkansen, local trains or the inner city. Nearby community shopping coupled with the cottage’s cooking facilities provide an easy way to keep your food bill under control while living like a native.

Mike and Yuko are both knowledgeable and gracious. Both speaking English is a special bonus when looking getting around or locating a place to purchase specialty items. We would recommend the Kamo Cottage for anyone, especially adventurous travelers, looking for a quiet refuge in Kyoto.

Good day to you Mike and Yuko

  • 5 of 5

We apologize to you, for not writing this review longer ago and that we are doing this barely now.

But we really want to let everyone know how wonderful we felt during the time we spent at your cottage. From the first moment we found your place it was dreamy for us.

Where else could you feel peaceful and free if not as close as possible to the nature.

We realize that if we were to book a hotel or some more centered place, wouldn't have been able to experience everything we did.

We wouldn't find out that in Kyoto's mornings people love jogging or exercising on the sides of the river.

That at the noon they enjoy relaxing or taking a nap on a bench at the shadow of a tree and even under the bridges listening to the murmur of the river.

And when the night falls romance surrounds you from all the places.

Couples are being intimate and share their love at the relaxing sound of students musical instruments, that are practicing each day for becoming better.

Other groups giggling while they're playing with fireworks. Everyone says " hello" to you with open heart and gladness in their voices.

We really felt magnificent during our stay in Kyoto at your place. We are grateful to you for giving us the chance to experience this moments.

Do we recommend your place !? We definitely do ! We've been telling all our friends and all the people we know, about how beautiful the time in Kyoto was for us. How cozy we felt at your place and how wonderful it was that you could just get outside, sit on the side of the river and interact with the nature. No cars, no traffic noises, just pure serenity .

Thank you Yuko and Mike for your hospitality and please forgive us for not interacting with you as much as your other guests, but as you have noticed we were always outside from the morning until night exploring Kyoto and surroundings. Thank you for your help every time we needed, and for the maps you provided in the room, they were many times helpful. Also for providing us with the bikes . It made it so easy for us to make it quick for seeing the shows of the Tanabata festival, to visit Kyoto and some of the temples ( are still many left to be seen) .

We hope to see you again and we would love to Visit Kyoto sometime in the spring, since Kamo river looks amazing with all the bloomed trees.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, and we are always very happy and grateful when someone has a good time in our city. You pointed out the most important points for us about living in this beautiful area as well. It is indeed something special to be so near to everything but at the same time, to have the sound of the river as you drift off to sleep. We want to offer our guests the best of both worlds: privacy and comfort, with all the support you need to enjoy your time here. And the people walking dogs, having picnics, and jogging down the riverside are right outside the door! If you happen to be an early riser it is a wonderful place to be for your morning stroll. Also the shops are just walking distance down past the first bridge. It was a pleasure to share our knowledge and information about the highlights of Kyoto with you, and certainly would love to see you again sometime. Happy travels and all the best with everything! MB
