About Durango Steele

I am an East Coast girl from Connecticut who moved to Colorado with my family when my father was employed by IBM in Boulder 1966! I graduated from Estes Park High School and continue to love this community and the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. I realize what a great privilege it is to be located next to one our our nation's treasured parks!

Durango Steele purchased this house in 1996

Why Durango Steele chose Rocky Mountain National Park

My husband, Mark, and I lived in Santa Barbara for many years. While enjoying our time there, our attention was drawn to the Craftsman Style of Architecture including Prairie Style and the California Bungalow. We fell in love with this style of home and knew that someday we would find a property suitable for us to restore with the artistic integrity of this form of architecture. We knew it was Rockhedge as soon as we visited the home. Built in 1921 and situated on a beautiful lot; this was the perfect place for us to restore in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

What makes this house unique

This home is warm and welcoming, thoughtfully renovated with attention to detail.

This is a favorite quote of our's by Frank Lloyd Wright:

'A Building should appear to grow easily from its site and be shaped to harmonize with its surroundings if nature is manifest there, and if not, try to make it as quiet, substantial, and organic as she would have done were the opportunity hers.'

We hope that you feel at home here. We are happy to share our interpretation of the Arts & Crafts architecture and philosophy with you. We know that you will enjoy the natural surroundings of this home, the easy access to the shops and restaurants of our charming mountain village and our spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park!

Welcome to Rockhedge.

Wonderful unique property!

  • 5 of 5

Loved the property and the large lot that has awesome views! The home has been very tastefully restored and every room is unique, especially the loft and outside balcony. Since we just visited during July, our only regret was that we did not get the opportunity to use the original fireplace, which we would love to experience. The home has two outdoor areas that can be used for grilling or just chilling, while enjoying the chipmunks, bunny family and the wonderful views. We found the home to be very accommodating, the kitchen was very well stocked & equipped, the beds were very comfortable, lots of towels and a handy washer/dryer. The owners, Durango and Mark have left their personal touches thru out the home and it is very inviting. I could live there full time if the opportunity arose! As for the location, we found Rockhedge to be perfect, you can walk 1/4 to 1/2 a mile to the main strip in Estes Park for restaurants and shops, or drive about 3 miles to the Rocky Mountain National Park entrance. Rockhedge is a wonderful place to stay while in Estes Park and we would recommend it for any time of year. We hope to go back soon!

We loved staying at Rockhedge, great house, yard, wild life, close to downtown, quiet area, and very caring owners. We will no doubt be looking to return and stay here again on our next trip which will hopefully be a longer stay. You cant go wrong at Rockhedge.

Magnificent!

  • 5 of 5

This home is beautiful, warm and inviting, with all of the comforts of a gracious home! My family enjoyed relaxing by the fire, cooking in the gourmet kitchen, watching all of the wildlife in the yard, playing in the snow, and the short drive into RMNP everyday! I can't say enough positive things about Rockhedge. We definitely want to return soon! Durango and Toon were attentive to the few concerns that came up over our week and a half stay. Great hosts!

Wonderful October visit to Rockhedge

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in several vacation rental properties and have never felt more at home than we did at Rockhedge. The house was incredibly cosy and we spent lots of time in the Adirondack chairs in front of the fireplace in the evening. In addition to a well stocked kitchen, Rockhedge was full of personal touches such as art work and loaded bookshelves. Each room had ample windows and offered great views of the beautiful surroundings, which included rock outcroppings right in the backyard. The property is within easy walking distance of the downtown. We packed lunches for hiking in RMNP and the only thing we could have used was a cooler. The master bedroom has a large bath attached. There is another small bedroom on the first floor, a bathroom with tub and shower attachment on the first floor, and a spacious loft. There is no bathroom on the loft level (but all of us slept well!) We recommend this property without hesitation and would happily return!
