About Vicki Salsbury
My husband and I grew up on Mount Desert Island, but Brent's family has had a camp on Donnell's Pond for over 50 years. We were very excited to find Nutkin Cottage. It needed lots of help, but Brent's a carpenter and I like to decorate, so it was perfect for us. We summer on the Pond and live in Lamoine in the winter.
Vicki Salsbury purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Vicki Salsbury chose Franklin
Nutkin is a low single-story cottage with an all-white interior that helps it feel cool in the hot summer months. Please note that water comes from the lake so you must bring in drinking water. We try to leave a gallon or two for the beginning of your stay.

Great cottage in a beautiful setting
Nutkin was in such a beautiful area with daily access to the lake and an easy drive to Ellsworth for any supplies you may need. The kids used the canoe daily, fished and swam at will! We spotted ospreys, bald eagles, a woodcock and even a baby porcupine at the corner of porcupine and squirrel lane! It is also a very easy trip to Acadia, which we explored several times. Such a great setting! Vicki was easy to reach when we needed to and we completely enjoyed our time at the cottage. If you stay, make sure you stop by Dorr Lobster, they had the freshest seafood around and the best lobster rolls the kids have ever had.
Great spot and a super clean cabin
The cabin was super clean! The kitchen is well equipped with pots, pans, bake ware, crockpot, toaster over, microwave...basically anything you could need. Bathrooms are also well equipped with plenty of towels, wash cloths and beach towels. Something not noted in the description is that it is essential to bring your own drinking water as the tap water comes from the pond. Bedding is fully provided and is left in bags on each bed so you know that it is clean as you get to inspect it as you make the bed. There is a fan located in each room. The master bedroom has two huge closets and a dresser, so unpack and relax! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Thank you for such a beautiful place to relax and unwind!
A TRUE MAINE CAMP
This is a true camp. Not fancy, very basic but clean! The main bedroom is very large with a comfortable bed and bath with a tub/shower combo. Again, very basic but clean. The other bedrooms are functionally obsolete (you go through bedroom 1 to get to bedroom 2). These rooms are tight and the back room does not have good air flow. My son found it hot in the evenings while the rest of the house was cool. Both of these rooms are bunk style (mattress over wire springs). They were not the most comfortable for adults. Would be fine for kids. The home is beautifully situated on a lake with little to no traffic. We enjoyed canoeing around the islands in the evening and even did a bit of fishing. Great lake for swimming or floating on a raft. The owners stock the house well with all necessary linens, and even some toys for kids. An added bonus to this house is a full sized washer and dryer! It was great to get away from it all . No T.V. or internet while at the house! We spent most of our days hiking in Acadia and evenings relaxing at the lake. So glad you enjoyed you stay at Nutkin Cottage. Sorry it was so hot. We don't usually have the heat we've been having this year....making sleeping uncomfortable. We do hope you'll come again. Thank you for taking the time to give us a review.
The cabin was in a nice location but the beds and furniture were very uncomfortable.
I'm so sorry these renters found our furnishings uncomfortable. In the past eleven years, none of our guests have complained of this. It is a camp with camp-like furniture. After they mentioned the bed in the master bedroom, I checked it out myself....it seemed fine to me. It's not one of those "number" beds, but I imagine it would give one a perfectly good sleep, especially coupled with the loons' occasional calls out on the pond.
bright,cheery , happy place
We rented this cottage for my husbands 40th birthday. It was so great. It is bright and cheery inside and beautiful outside.
It is a typical camp with a ride on a narrow bumpy road, the cottage is at the end of a small road off of a larger one. It has plenty of privacy.
There is a lot of space and the deck was great for watching everything on the lake.
All around we were thrilled with this vacation rental.
The Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park is approximately 40 minutes away driving east on Rt. 1 The cottage is about equi-distance from the Mount Desert Island portion.
