When you're on vacation, the house you stay at should be as beautiful as the surroundings you're in. This modern eco-lux house, designed by John Hix, and finished in September of 2009, epitomizes that idea.
No matter where you are in the house. Kitchen, living room, or the bedrooms, you see an uninterrupted vista of trees, that culminates in the wide blue sea. The house was built to take advantage of prevailing breezes, so it's always cool. Whether you're barbecuing by the pool, or having a drink on the roof deck watching the sun set into the ocean, the ramp house is a relaxing, organic experience. If you need air-conditioning and wide-screen tv, then this house isn't for you. But, if you like indoor/outdoor living, waking up to the sound of the birds, the warm breeze on your skin, then this is the place. Due to it's design, The Ramp House is not appropriate for children under ten years of age.
What a place! What a vacation! We had such a marvelous time at the Ramp House and in Vieques. What a unique and wonderful house! Its openness was a gift, as was its simplicity. The concrete was intimidating the first few hours, but we quickly fell in love with its serenity. The spareness of the place was utterly soothing - something I aspire to in my own home. Being directed toward the pool and the view, not to mention the up-close foliage and the horses, was spectacular. And the bedrooms were magical - again, the view, the simplicity, being treated to the night sky, to the dawn, but most of all, to the elegant mosquito net. Going to bed was something I looked forward to. The room and the netting made a gentle enclosure. And the accessibility of the pool! What a luxury to step from your living room into the water and to swim in such private circumstances. Oh, thank you, thank you to the owners for making their home available for our family to enjoy. We were also very grateful for the owner's booklet of recommendations. (Not to mention his photographs, which were outstanding!!) We enjoyed discovering parts of Vieques and some of its amazing beaches. The weather and the scenery were also a gift. And now, after a well-rested week away, we are home. I wish I could crawl under the netting tonight.
What an amazing place! We absolutely loved the house and the location. Close to Esperanza, but up on a hillside with no neighbors in sight. It was so quiet and peaceful here. Even though there is no air conditioners it never got overly warm in the house. The ceiling fans combined with the breeze kept us cool at night. We also really enjoyed the pool and the fact that it felt like part of the house- you could be swimming in the pool and still be part of the rest of the group in the kitchen or living room. This was my 5th trip to Vieques. I live on the west side of Puerto Rico and try to come to Vieques whenever I can. The house definitely made this trip a memorable one. Much as I love exploring Vieques, I was content to just stay at the house. The house has eveything you need, and the outdoor showers (a feature I loved) have very hot water. The house is well maintained and clean. If you love nature and peace and quiet and want to experience what makes Vieques so special, this is the house for you. I would definitely stay here again.
We love the Ramp house. We stayed for 2 weeks in February. From the moment we arrived, the caretaker Renee was so helpful in the house and also offering many suggestions and helpful hints about the island. When we walked in the first time - we were so excited. The pool is out out of this world perfect. This house with modern minimalist architecture but has everything you might need for a stay in Vieques. The house is designed so that while you are indoors you still have the benefits of the outdoors. It is open air with wonderful views of the pool (which is extraordinary), the trees and the ocean beyond. There is abundant bird life and horses roam free. It is very private and each morning you wake to a beautiful view of the rising sun. While the house has 3 bedrooms, we were very comfortable as a couple there. It was great to cook in the house and there were many restaurants nearby that were quite good. The house is perfectly situated between the 2 main towns in Vieques and just a quick drive to the beaches. We did yoga everyday at the Hix house at 9:30am which is nearby. It was a wonderful class taught but a great teacher. The kitchen is stocked perfectly and linens and beach towels are great. We hope to return soon.
Where to begin.... My fiance and I stayed at the Ramp house with another couple and a friend for a week, and wish it could have been a month! The pool was clean and the perfect temperature, the views were breathtaking, the bedrooms were large and immaculate, and the roof was the perfect place to catch the shooting stars and count constellations. Renee picked us up at the airport, gave us the scoop on what's new in Vieques and a tour of the house. She gave great recommendations for where to eat and what to do, and asked us to call if we needed any more info or suggestions. She was very friendly and made us feel incredibly welcome. The house had a big fridge and everything we needed to cook multiple meals. The grill worked great and the furniture was all very comfortable. The outdoor showers were lovely. There is even a portable sound system that connects to devices wirelessly and wifi. We definitely plan on being back and already tried to book again for New Years although it has been booked for a while already - which isn't surprising considering how perfect the Ramp House is. I highly recommend staying here during a stay in Vieques - it was a real delight.
A girlfriend/colleague and I spent a week at ramp house to clear our minds and do some professional writing. I've been to Vieques three times prior to this trip and this trip was the best -- hands down -- because Ramp house is the best place I have stayed on the island. This house is simply stunning for all of your senses -- open air design, high ceilings, polished concrete. The design brings the best of the inside outdoors -- the light breeze, the island sounds of crickets, horses whinnying, and birds (even some dogs and roosters in the distance in Esperanza). The house is much larger than it appears; there were many places to think and write -- my favorite was the rooftop where I perched above the forest canopy and watch both the sunrise and the sunset. Even though there were only two of us, I could see being here with three couples and still feel like we had a ton of space. Oh, and did I mention the three amazeballs outdoor showers with views of the horizon? There were a pack of three horses that would drop by a few times a day, too. We were thoroughly amused by the white horse that visited for the primary reason of scratching his hiney on a branch by the house that was at the perfect level for him. In addition, the house is stylishly decorated with the owner's photography (very cool), is impeccably clean and maintained, has every amenity (beach chairs, snorkel stuff, beach towels, washer dryer, lovely kitchen [we cooked many meals in house]) so that everything was there for us. There was also an excellent binder with descriptions of all the best beaches (and how to get there), as well as restaurants (with menus), and recommendations for what to do on the island (biobay, horseback riding -- make reservations before your arrival). The property managers and the real estate agent were excellent -- thoughtful, informative, kind, and very helpful.
In sum, this was the perfect vacation -- relaxing, fulfilling, and very private. I can't wait to go back again.

This property is amazing - stunning views, very private, great location, an uber cool home. We especially loved the swimming pool right in our living room. The outdoor showers were wonderful, especially at night under the stars. A few of our group slept on the roof for a few nights and had the best star show on the island. The kitchen was well appointed and the house manager took care of everything we needed. Sleeping there was interesting - you can hear all of the outdoor sounds and you will awaken to the sunshine on your face. The closeness with nature will remind you that you are away from it all - you will hear birds, horses, dogs, cows, etc. We loved being close to Esperanza, the beaches, and yoga at Hix. Vieques is a true gem and staying at this house is unforgettable. We already booked for next year......
My wife, my 7-year-old daughter, and I just returned from a week at Ramp House. This is our second time staying at the property. I don't think we could stay anywhere else.
Thing we love about it:
The privacy. The grounds are large and you do not see other neighbors -- except for a few wild horses who like to nibble the grasses. You feel removed from it all.
The pool. It stretches the entire length of the house and is about 5 feet deep. It is gorgeous. While swimming you have wonderful views down about a half-mile of lush hills to the ocean. Can't decide whether it is better in the morning as the sun is rising or at night when the stars are out.
The layout. Living, cooking, and swimming on the first floor; sleeping on the second floor; lounging on the roof deck. Everything is open. No glass windows. (Yes, that means no air-conditioning. Who care? The breezes and fans are better.) Great views from every floor. Those pictures are accurate!
The amenities. Everything you need is here. Beach towels, beach chairs, snorkel gear, sand toys, wi-fi, blue-tooth music player, blender, coffee-maker, great stove and refrigerator.
We'll be back for sure.
The location of The Ramp House is ideal, while private and pastoral, it's just five minutes to shops, restaurants and beach in Esperanza, or five minutes to groceries and gas in town.
