Kahana Sunset is quite special since it has its own spacious white sandy beach in Keone Nui Bay. Sitting on our west facing beach you have picturesque views of Molokai and Lanai islands.

Since this is a small complex, it is ideal for family vacations and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Loads of lawn and garden space if the pool and beach are not your preference. Both of our lanais give you straight on views of our grounds and sunsets on the water.

We're sure once you've spent your first vacation here ... you'll return. Over 50% of Kahana Sunset guests are return guests, many have been vacationing here for over 20 years.

About John King

The King's, Kathie and John. Our first visit to this complex was on our honeymoon in 1994 and we have been vacationing there once or twice a year ever since. In 2002 we decided we had to purchase our own piece of paradise. Our son Marc and his wife Nicki and our grand kids Gianna and Dante really love this Maui paradise too. We should all be so lucky, G We all live in Windsor, California, which is about an hour north of San Francisco.

John King purchased this condo in 2002

Why John King chose Lahaina

We chose to buy here because it's a smaller complex, the grounds are well maintained, has it's own beach, great views of Molokai and Lanai, good snorkeling, and it's peaceful.

Sun, Surf and Turtles

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at the Kahana Sunset for 10 glorious days in July, 2017, and there was plenty of room for 5 adults and one child in unit D7. We've been to Maui before and stayed in the Wailea area , but we were keen to try Kaanapali-Kapalua hoping it did not have the sometimes-strong onshore breezes that can be found near Kihei and Wailea in the summer months. I'm happy to report that the Kahana Sunset beach does not seem to have this problem.

The property is well-kept and clean with a nice solar heated pool, BBQ areas which are cleaned daily, lots of flora and fauna, and even an herb garden. Guests can pick what they want from it as well as the citrus trees. The limes, rosemary, mint, and chives came to good use in the kitchen. While the beach is small, there is almost no reason to go anywhere else for snorkeling. Every day we saw turtles and a wide variety of fish. While the other beaches 1 or 2 miles away are larger and more picturesque (Napili Bay, Kapalua Beach), they are rather crowded.

The unit is well-appointed, especially the kitchen, which my wife and daughter-in-law used quite a bit. The beds are very comfortable. The sun sets over Moloka'i which is directly across the water from the Kahana Sunset. People gather down by the sea wall and beach every evening to watch the sun go down on another beautiful day in Hawaii. Since there is no AC, the unit does get warm in the afternoon until the sun goes down. Since we are from Arizona, this was not an issue for us.Just open all the windows and doors, turn on the fans, and let the trade winds take over.

The location is quiet for the most part. Other than the plentiful singing birds, neighbors with needy infants/toddlers and the occasional car driving on the road, which sweeps behind the property, breaks the morning solitude. Sitting out on the lanai in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening with a glass of wine is very relaxing. As I write this, I wish I was back there now. Thank you, King Family, for a wonderful stay!

Wonderful Kahana Sunset Condominium - Great Value!

  • 4 of 5

Our family of five spent 9 days at this unit and couldn't have been more pleased. The Kahana Sunset grounds are meticulously maintained by a dedicated staff. The pool area and common areas (including some excellent BBQ grills) are cleaned daily, the vegetation is beautiful, the grass is fairway quality, and the beach is spotless. The beach and ocean cove are a small slice of paradise. The days we were there the water was smooth and clear with excellent snorkeling with fish and sea turtles. The sand is perfect, and my kids really enjoyed playing on the beach and in the water. This complex is a very nice change of pace from some of the other larger resorts on Maui. There is no fighting the crowds for lounge chairs or prime spots by the pool or beach. It is also extremely convenient to make quick trips back to the unit to grab drinks/snacks, beach toys, towels, etc. At the larger resorts that can be a 15 minute trip. At Kahana Sunset it is about a minute trip. We also especially enjoyed picking limes off the lime trees for our drinks and one day the staff set out a basket of bananas grown on the property. The property is ideally situated about 15 minutes north of downtown Lahaina and a mile south of Kapalua. I enjoyed morning runs north to Kapalua to enjoy the beautiful Kapalua Coastal Trail, which is about a 5 mile round trip from Kahana Sunset.

The unit itself is an ideal set-up for a family of 4-5 looking for the conveniences of home in an ideal location. We fully utilized the well supplied kitchen throughout the week. Air conditioning is a major bonus for this specific unit as I believe the majority of the other units in Kahana Sunset do not have air. The beds are very comfortable and the showers are clean, big, and have nice water pressure and ventilation. The laundry machine and dryer are located in the master bedroom and very convenient. The unit has covered parking located just outside the entrance. We also found the owner and property manager of this unit to be very attentive to our needs and any questions we had before, during and after our trip. The only minor suggestions for improvement would be that the bedspreads, furniture in the living room, and stairway carpeting are a little past their prime and while clean, could be refreshed. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this unit for anyone interested in a great value for a Maui vacation with this family. We would definitely stay there again on a return trip.

Dirty with Bugs

  • 1 of 5

The upstairs lanai off the master bedroom was covered in bird poop and spider webs, virtually unusable, no effort was made to clean this space. The downstairs deck was only slightly better, but it too was covered in bird poop and sand and debris. This space was not cleaned by the cleaning crews before we arrived. The railing on the main deck was also covered in bird poop. I understand there is a lot of birds, but these areas must be cleaned between clients. The carpet on the staircase was so dirty it was a different color than the edges and it was tacky feeling, the area rug in the main room had the same issue, it was originally green but now it’s tan and packed down with dirt and lotion and sand. The kitchen was constant battle with these little tiny mite bugs, they were all over the counter tops and everywhere in the kitchen and we also killed two other bugs that looked like small roaches. The white tile on the main floor was disgusting, it felt tacky and would leave the bottoms of your feet black after walking on it a few times. The grout went from tan in the main room to black in the kitchen, it never has been deep cleaned it appears. The hand rails going up the stairs are downright disgusting to look at, the paint is white but they were sticky brown with so much buildup no one would touch them. The couch was old and dirty the cushions were flat and worn out.The dishwasher leaked. No auto ice maker. The mini blinds covered in dust and something that looks like black mold especially upstairs master bedroom. The dresser drawers were full of sand and hair, we had to clean these before putting our clothes in them. The front door of the unit sticks. It says remodeled but that must have been years ago because it needs new appliances and flooring and another remodel. Cleaning is more than changing the sheets and putting a stack of clean towels down. No broom provided they had a pad sweeper but no pad, the vacuum didn’t have enough power to suck up a single grain of sand. Now for the Good, the mattress was great, the AC was nice however I would like to have control of the thermostat instead of just on or off.

Great location, wonderful beach, terrific views

  • 5 of 5

It was fantastic place to stay and very good location. The newly installed AC worked as expected and was really helpful during our stay. The surrounding property is well-kept with plenty of flowers and tropical fruits. The beach is great, and we enjoyed swimming and snorkeling with turtles. We enjoyed having a barbecues with ocean view. Kahana Sunset condo is just comfortable place for vacation on Maui.

First impression was walking into a unit that literally stunk

  • 1 of 5

The unit had an odor as we first walked in and it was coming from the filthy carpeting going up the stairs. Not a good way to start your vacation.

I have stayed at Kahana Sunset 5 times and never experienced this in the past. The unit is in need of upgrades. The handrails going up the stairs were very tacky and seemed to be dirty, but I think it was just that the many layers of paint never set up. We bought clorox wipes to try to clean and disinfect it . You should replace the carpeting and handrails.

Sullivan properties did not do a good job of keeping this unit in top condition. We would not use them again
