After visiting many lakes in Michigan, we found the best one for our family. Elk Lake is a perfect combination of clear Caribbean water, low boating traffic, and it's close to a charming town with great restaurants.
Well stocked for a large group's needs.
I wanted to let you know that we certainly loved the Elk Lake Estate and all of its many features. The home was so well equipped that we hardly did without anything. And I bet what we did without might have been there, we just didn't know where to look!
The lake, while pretty cool, was just perfect for our younger ones and also the young married set who brought a boat to use. They skied, went to Elk Rapids, and just in general loved the lake. It was very smooth most of the time. The play structure was a big hit with the grandkids in the group! Our granddaughter wanted to swing all the time! The water was so pretty and clear that we never worried out the little ones when they were in it. While the Lake Room gave us a little challenge to see how to arrange the sleepers in there, it still worked very well! The Captain's Quarters is AMAZING! (That ended up being my husband's and my room.) The private baths for all the many bedrooms really helped with the large group staying there. All the different zones in the house made it easy to be alone if one needed to be or left us space to all be together, too. We have one member of the family who was just married about a month ago in a very small ceremony. Since most of us weren't at the wedding, we celebrated one evening with a reception/celebration for them. It was the best evening of the week. In short, the house was perfect for our purposes.
Our vacation this year was one that had been in the works for over three years. Finally my siblings and all of their families were going to meet and spend time to relax and just catch up. Bringing such a large group of people together can be a daunting task. But as soon as we stepped into this incredible home, everything just fell into place and I felt like a kid again hanging out with my brother and sister. It was a magical place because all of our young kids put their electronics away and were outside swimming off the docks, playing volleyball, and sitting around the fire and telling stories...just like I used to do as a kid before the age of the smart phone. Not once did my young kids ask to play a video game, or watch Netflix...it was amazing. It was an incredible experience to share with my children and it was a comfortable one staying at such a beautiful and charming home. EVERYTHING we could possibly have wanted was right at our fingertips. We had one rainy night, but we stayed up and played scrabble and a few other board games. It was just perfect. The lake is gorgeous and peaceful. It was an amazing trip and was the spiritual and mental refresh I needed. Jennifer is an excellent hostess and she always was available for any questions I had. We will definitely be heading back this way again next year!
Outside: Crystal clear water, clean sand, more than enough high quality outdoor seating(Pictures don't show!), fire pit, free wood for the fire pit(Pictures don't show!), boat dock (rented a fast boat for 5 hours for $160) , SAND VOLLEYBALL COURT (with rakes!), Grill WITH propane in it (HIGH QUALITY), and prob 50 other things that I have forgotten about.
Inside: Each room has a "theme", making the entire place very cozy and comfortable. There was more than enough sleeping space for everyone (~ 20 people), beds were comfortable. The kitchens (2) were SUPER STOCKED with everything you could possible need (sans a can opener? hahaha), with really high quality appliances that I've never seen at a rental property before! On top of that, they had nice big LCD TV's, multiple "living rooms" (We only used the top floor), and an amazing outdoor patio connected to it all.
Complaints: Your pictures DO NOT DO IT JUSTICE! You have all this amazing outdoor furniture that I'm sure you spent a few grand on and you don't even show it! Even inside is more "updated" and nice than what you see in some of the pictures! The pictures on here and on the website really don't show 50% of what you are getting with the house, so at least it was a great surprise!
The only real thing I would change is the outdoor steps that go from the patio to the ground floor are a rather dark area at night. Some sort of lighting on the stairs would be a good safety call in my eyes.
While we have been doing a winter guy's trip for years, I think we have found the place where we will be starting our annual Summer Guy's trip!
Thank you again Jennifer for letting us stay here. You were a great host (She kept in contact with me over the stay period multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed, and never bugged us while we were there.
A+ , will be coming back!
With 200 ft of frontage you can enjoy the beautiful turquoise water of Elk Lake and travel the entire chain of lakes. Elk Rapids is a charming town with restaurants, art galleries and antique shops.
