Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms (10 beds- zoned for 8 adults + 2 children under 2yrs)

If Ralph Lauren ever featured a lake house in any of his advertisements, this would be the property he would use. Almost every room features a magnificent and unfettered view across broad expanses of Smith Mountain Lake. There is a link below to additional photographs. The covered back porch faces West and is where we sit to watch the kids playing in the yard or watch the sunsets while sharing a glass of wine and listening to our favorite tunes through speakers located throughout the propery (via satellilte radio).

The lake house sits on almost 3 acres and is almost completely surrounded on three sides by the lake. It has a secluded cove for safe swimming and a large boat house with covered lounging as well. There is a grassy field for soccer play and another for lawn tennis (badminton).

Around the corner from Mitchell's Point Marina where you can rent boats and wave runners. The Marina also provides free wireless internet and has a bar and grill with excellent food.

PETS: Not permitted.

About Reed Tolber

I am an attorney practicing law in both Virginia and Florida. My wife stopped working as an investment money manager (she has a CFA and MBA) to help raise our twin boys, now teenagers. Our family loves the water so, when we left Florida ten years ago we were excited to find this wonderful lake house permitting us to spend large amounts of quality time together as a family. The whole family enjoys skiing, wake boarding and boating. Many afternoons we spend floating in the cove just off our boat house spending time with the boys - when they aren't wrestling with each other and throwing each other into the lake from our floating trampoline - king of the mountain style.

Reed Tolber purchased this house in 2007

Why Reed Tolber chose Smith Mountain Lake

We love Huddleston and being on the Bedford side of the lake. Our lake house is located on a very wide part of the Craddock Creek part of the lake and the water quality is much clearer than the more northern part of the lake. That is because by the time the various streams and rivers join and get down to our part of the lake, all of the silt in the water has settled- usually by the time it goes through the winding bends just northwest of our part of the lake. We also love being right around the corner from a great marina- Mitchell's Point Marina. It makes it easy to get gas for the boat and wave runner and means we are close to a nice bar and grill and ice cream for the kids. On the weekends, Mitchell's often has live entertainment in the form of local bands. By boat, we are about three minutes away. By car, we are about one half mile away from Mitchell's point. We are also close - by water- to Mariner's Landing, a very nice hotel and golfing destination with great dining as well.

Notes:
Since we view the house as a retreat, we decided not to have the distractions of the internet and television. Instead, we have set up a home theater system with a high definition DVD player and suuround sound to play movies every night. Most guests are able to use their cell phones as a data 'hot spot' to access the internet. In an emergency, there is a free Wi-Fi hot spot (wireless internet cafe) at Mtichell's Point Marina, a very short walk from the house by land and a two minute boat ride (two coves away). Mitchell's Point Marina is a wonderful resource for renters. Mitchell's features a really cute and quaint bar and grill that is owned by one of the areas most popular caterers. He serves some of the best smoked barbecue you will ever taste! The Marina also rents boats, wave runners and water ski equipment and rafts to pull behind a boat.

Amazing and Relaxing.

The view was extraordinary, the seeing was relaxing and the owner was extremely easy to work with both before and after our stay. Beware only stay here if you want a great experience.

Peace and Calm

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I tried to fit in one last summer trip with our twin 4 year olds. We had never been to Smith Mountain Lake and did not know what to expect. This home was an absolute pleasure. The view is divine and we either kayaked or swam or fished most of every day. The house was charming and has a lovely open family/dining/kitchen area. And seeing that sun set from the screened porch or a chair on the big lawn was gorgeous and something to remember!

Great Family Fun

  • 5 of 5

This was a terrific property for our family gathering from age 4 to age 92. There was plenty of fun with yard games, trampoline, fishing, boating and beautiful quiet spaces for those that wanted to just relax. The owners were extremely accommodating and very responsive to any questions or needs. The marina where we rented a pontoon boat was very close adding ease and fun. This is a lovely property with so many extras provided. Can't wait to come back!!

The little extras make a big difference

  • 5 of 5

Great house on a Great Lake. We have been coming to SML for many years and this was by far the best organized house we have ever rented. The bottled water, cleaning supplies, towels, well equipped kitchen, recycling, and trash service are all little extra details that make this wonderful house even more enjoyable. We can't wait to come back.

The property was so beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

My family's trip to this area/ property far exceeded our expectations. The property was so spacious and lovely in every way. The screened in sun porch was the favorite of everyone, (well, maybe second to the water trampoline!) and we spent every indoor minute there. I loved that the lake was not over crowded with homes, and the beauty of the lake was breathtaking. The marina was so convenient to the house. Best stocked home I have ever stayed at. So nice not to have to drag bath towels, beach towels, garbage bags, foil, baggies, etc. Mr. Tolbert was a peach to deal! A great time was had by all.....thank you so much. M. Parise and family

Amazing vacation home!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house, we loved this location, we loved the owner who was amazing to work with and we would love to go back! We had everything we needed at the house and I mean everything! We brought food and beverages and that was all we needed! The children loved the water trampoline and my husband spent countless hours fishing from the deck. Do not pass up this property.

Smith Mountain Lake has wine festivals, art festivals, flea markets and the like, throughout the year. Check online for those activities. The lake is famous for its bass fishing, and annually hosts a bass fishing tournament (hosted and filmed by ESPN sports network). The National D-Day Memorial, designed by Dickson Architects and Associates is in Bedford County, the county where this lake house is located. The Memorial exists in tribute to the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of the Allied Forces on D-Day, 6 June 1944. The United States Congress warranted the establishment of the Memorial at Bedford, Virginia, the community suffering the country’s severest per capita losses on D-Day.
