Bring your boat, fishing gear, water skis, water equipment, and binoculars. The unit is fully furnished and fully air conditioned. A playground for kids is one block away. 2 docks for docking and fishing.

Pickerel Creek, Blue Heron Rreserve, and OWNR close by. One half hour from Cedar Point and the Port Clinton or Sandusky ferry boats to the Islands. Boating, water skiing, tubing, biking on site. Quaint popular eating establishments in nearby Fremont include: Whitey’s Diner and Billy’s Restaurant, and The Tackle Box well know for its generous 1 pound perch special on Friday evenings.

We also welcome duck and deer hunters to this rural and natural area with its many state wildlife areas

Spring and Summer Fishing: Ideal fishing for interested fishermen is the spring walleye run on the Sandusky River in Fremont. For walleye anglers, the Sandusky River in downtown Fremont offers plenty of action. Shore anglers can access the river easily at Swartzlander Park in downtown Fremont. Shoreline anglers can also fish the bay at Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area, Willow Point Wildlife Area, and upstream the action begins earlier with Memory Marina and Riverfront Marina providing boating access to the river where these transitional fish can be found. Huge catches of Walleye are taken from the river in downtown Fremont. The most consistent success on spring walleye usually occurs in the deep pools that line the Sandusky River between the State Street and Miles Newton Bridges in Fremont. The run usually peaks in early April, but fishing stays good throughout the month with White Bass fishing following the Walleye run through June. A variety of pan fish can be easily caught throughout the year.

Birding Opportunities & Memory Marina: Because of the proximity of the river, bay, and lake great birding Hot Spots include the various wildlife areas, ponds and tributaries on site or nearby. Close by areas include the Magee Marsh & Ottawa National Wldlife area, Castalia and the Resthaven area, Blue Heron Reserve, and Pickerel Creek. Eagles, Herons, Egrets and songbirds can be observed right from the cottage. Memory Marina is located ¼ of a mile from the cottage. You can put your boat in at this location and dock in front of the cottage. Memory Marina also operates a little store with many tasty and useful items for your convenience. Most mornings eagles can easily be seen from the cottage deck or large windows of the cottage where you can observe them hunting for breakfast while you enjoy yours.

President Hayes Home: The Hayes Home and museum, Fremont's National Treasurer, offers outdoor concerts on the veranda the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month during the summer. Hayes was the 19th president of the United States. The home at Speigel Grove sits on a large hill and is surrounded by beautiful mature trees many of which were planted when the Hayes family occupied the home. A Civil War enactment held each fall at Spiegel Grove. Chateau Tableau winery is also nearby in Helena and is a unique experience for wine lovers.

A Wonderful Place to Stay

  • 4 of 5

We drove from Philadelphia, PA to this Fremont cottage and it was an absolute delight to stay here. We are siblings who grew up in this area as kids and this was our reunion trip to see friends and family, since it had been 5 years since our last visit. Your cottage was just perfect in accommodating 4 adults. It was exactly as described and very clean and neat. It had all the amenities you could need and the 2 twin beds were very comfortable.

There really was not very much to complain about, but felt it should be mentioned as a suggestion:

- there was no storage or shelf space in the bathroom. Which made it a bit tricky in the morning, trying to balance hair brushes, toothpaste and coffee cups. Some "on the wall shelving" or a little table would do wonders, so guests can have a place to put their morning stuff on!

- The bedroom with the queen size bed, had no dressers or storage. Again, maybe some wall shelving or hooks can help with where to put clothes, jewerly, etc.

I would highly recommend this property for friends or family to utilize in lieu of staying in a hotel room, especially if staying for more than a few days. It was a great place and we really enjoyed our stay.

The notebook of restaurants and attractions was a great help in determining what to do and where to go, if not familiar with the area.

Thank you

Rustic and relaxing

  • 3 of 5

This is a sweet little kitchy cottage that reminds me of my granny's lakehouse-from the melamine dishes to the decor. The river was beautiful, slow-moving and quiet. The cottage faces a no-wake zone so we weren't bothered by loud boat engines.

We saw tons of egrets, blue herons and the highlight of our trip was the two bald eagles that fished in front of the cottage on night-amazing!! They definately had better luck fishing than us. We even watched a deer swim across the river to an island nearby.

Frank was very nice, accomodating and helpful. The location was remote but quick to area attractions.

My only criticisms are these: the place needs a deep cleaning. It was pretty dirty, especially the fridge. The outside could also use a good power-washing! We didn't have some basics for the kitchen-pancake turner, strainer, serving spoons... We had to ask for sheets for the pull out sofas and had only the blankets that were on the beds. Some of the dishes that were put away were covered in food. We ended up washing everything we needed first.

Lastly, not the cottage owners fault, but the neighborhood sadly very run-down.

Great rustic place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Otto cottage over the Memorial Day weekend, and were very pleased. We chose the location as a meeting point between the home cities of ourselves and our son, and it's convenient distance from Cedar Point.

The property is well maintained, especially the interior, and the description of rustic is accurate. We were able to tour other properties owned by this family, and all were nice, this one was certainly the most "retro!" That was fine with us, we enjoyed all of the stay.

Our group included 4 adults and a dog, and we ended up using both bedrooms and a pull out couch, and all of them were very comfortable.

The owners were wonderful, very nice people. They were helpful when we needed help, and otherwise left us to enjoy our time together. I would absolutely recommend the property to others. It was very warm when we were there, and the air conditioning was WONDERFUL!

The location was also convenient for us to drive to Sandusky and take the Miller Ferry to Put in Bay for a day of touring, shopping and eating. Thanks Linda, Steve and Frank, for a wonderful stay.

Our family came up to this beautiful area for vacation. The area is great. We loved the cottage. Its a very quite rural area. I would recommend this cottage to anyone who has children and anyone who loves the rural setting. the river is beautiful and your close to all attractions in the area. the owner is very nice and very helpful. The only thing we regret is that we couldn't stay longer!!! Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful cottage.

Very nice Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a very nice cottage. We really enjoyed our stay here. We came with a group of 5 and can’t wait till next time to spread the word and invite more people within our circle. The pricing was excellent. The owners were very nice and Frank and Linda was a great help when we needed anything. Everyone was very personable, approachable, friendly and professional. The cottage sits right on the water front with a great view of the lake. This place sleeps 8 very comfortable. There are two bedrooms and two pull out sofas. The cottage has everything that is needed for you stay. Cedar Point Park is on a short 20 minute drive down the rural roads which beats dealing with all the traffic on the main highway. There are late night eateries also within a 5 minute drive ie. Applebee’s, Frickers, and believe it or not there is a Wal-Mart here also. I can’t wait to book this place again for the years to come.

Thank you for a wonderful stay

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. We enjoyed having you as guests and appreciate the fact that you are going to come back and bring family and friends. If you can stay a little longer next time you will find out many more things that this area has to offer although Cedar Point is certainly the big one for many people. We continue to update our cottage booklet so people can find all the area attractions. Thanks again for the comments and we look forward to your upcoming visit.
