About Mike Ray

I have been skiing around Tahoe for over 45 years. A couple of years ago, my family and I realized a longtime dream of owning a vacation home in Lake Tahoe. When looking for this home, we wanted a place that felt like a peaceful mountain retreat. Our family loves the outdoors and all the fun recreation that goes with it; and this vacation home let's us enjoy all of it. We have put a lot of love and effort into upgrading the house into a comfortable and welcome place to enjoy. We hope you enjoy it too.

Mike Ray purchased this house in 2009

Why Mike Ray chose South Lake Tahoe

When we found this property on the Upper Truckee River, we knew we found the right place. It is a beautiful property with a historic ranch on the other side of the river and awesome mountain, river and meadow views. This house is not crammed onto a small lot like so many homes in Tahoe. This home is on an acre with a big deck that overlooks the large grassy area next to the river. We also chose this area because the property is close to Kirkwood, Heavenly and Sierra at Tahoe ski areas. All the amenities of South Lake Tahoe are also nearby.

What makes this house unique

This is one of only a few properties with a home directly on the Upper Truckee River. Swimming in the river and just hanging out and enjoying the beautiful scenery without having to drive anywhere make this property unique. The beautiful beaches of Lake Tahoe are a short drive. Skiing and snowboarding at Kirkwood, Heavenly, and Sierra at Tahoe ski resorts. Backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, biking (Mr. Toad's Wild Ride mountain bike trail is nearby), golfing, all the recreation a mountain enthusiast could want. Fall colors in Hope Valley are just 10 minutes away.

Great experience, great memories!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Claudia and Mike,

We had a wonderful time at your house. It is comfortable, well divided and perfectly organized. Spacious but cozy at the same time. All of us agreed that we had a positive experience being together for the long time for that reason. The beds were all comfortable and the bathroom beautifully remodeled. The jacuzzi: even for our muscles after a day of skiing!! The two boys had a great time playing in the game room. The garden is amazing and we hope there will be another time to come during the summer to appreciate it even more!

On behalf of all of us, thanks for the good memories!

Great Stay in a quite neighborhood with fresh snow!

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate to arrive at the house with 18” of fresh snow on a clear day. The drive way had just been cleared by the snow removal service and all eight of us (adults) found the home to be inviting, roomy and well equipped. The code to the keyless entry the owner pre arranged was easy to work and convenient to all of us. The pre-set automatic thermostat had the place warm upon our arrival and throughout our stay, again super convenient and thoughtful. The three bathrooms had been newly renovated and were exceptionally clean. All the bedrooms were of ample size, very comfortable beds with linens and pillows and wall to wall quality carpeting.

This is no rustic accommodation but a very nice home with natural light and gorgeous views throughout most of the windows. It’s located in a very quite neighborhood and we often walked the streets enjoying the serenity and beauty of our winter escape. The two car garage provided (some of) our cars to be snow free and the other two cars resided in the driveway. We all enjoyed the large family table for our meals, the ease of the well equipped kitchen and convenient service bar location. The downstairs TV is a large flat screen HD with satellite cable and the couches are well placed for comfort and viewing. The rear outside deck is new with contemporary LED lighting, spacious room and yields wonderful views of the back yard meadow.

I would highly recommend Ray‘s River Front Retreat for those who want the comfort of a home at a VERY affordable rate. All of us had a grand vacation and are so happy that we decided on this lovely home as our hub for accommodation. We have already booked our next visit for our summer getaway.

Great weekend with great friends, but disappointing home.

  • 2 of 5

We were 3 families (6 adults, 6 kids) that stayed at this home for the President’s Day weekend for a skiing and winter getaway. We have stayed at over two dozen VRBO homes and found this home to be subpar in relation to our previous experiences at other rental homes. Below is a quick summary of our experience:

PROS –

• Mike Ray was great to work with. Responsive, helpful, and informative regarding access to the property and snow plow conditions on the roads.

• The house is a good size with a good layout of bedrooms and loft area.

• The property is large with a large area for potential snow play in the backyard.

• Easy and convenient access to Sierra-at-Tahoe for skiing.

CONS –

• Upon arrival, our friends found hair in their bed, which obviously was not theirs. We attempted to change the sheets, but there were no extra bed sheets available.

• There were stains of unknown origin on the comforter in the upstairs bedroom.

• Some of the dishes found in the kitchen cupboards were dirty with caked on food. The house has a policy for guests to clean all dishes and put them away upon their departure. Our assumption is that previous guests did not do a good job. Perhaps change this policy?

• The kitchen pantry was dirty and we ended up not placing our food in there.

• Not so critical, but some of the kitchen drawers were difficult to pull out and one drawer was broken which posed as a safety hazard - if pulled out too far, it would fall to the floor.

• There is no body soap or shampoo provided at this house. Need to bring your own.

• There were no sheets or blankets provided for the pull-out sofa in the loft. Luckily, we brought our own sleeping bags our kids could use. Moreover, there were no pillowcases provided for the extra pillows in the closets.

• The fireplace was not cleaned out upon our arrival and there were lots of ashes left.

• At night, two families could hear pretty loud critter sounds (rats? mice? squirrels?) coming from the ceilings in the two bedrooms above the garage.

We think with a more attention to detail, cleanliness, and a little more attention to guests’ needs, the house can be great. However, it really felt bare bones for the amount we paid and we have experienced much better homes, which were better appointed for comparable prices.

Owner's Response: (A note to future guests: We have, up to this date, 42 reviews; 35 of which are 5 stars and 5 that are 4 stars. Please take that into consideration when weighing this review.) We thank our guest for their feedback. We strive to present a clean, warm and inviting home and encourage our guests to contact us immediately if anything is wrong. In this rare instance, the home was not cleaned to the standards we expect from our cleaning service. Had our guests informed us there was a cleaning problem, we would have had the cleaning crew come back at the guests’ convenience and take care of the issues stated. We passed this review on to the cleaning service to address the issues and make sure that it is not a problem in the future. Linens for the sofa bed are stored in the upstairs hallway closet and again, we would have immediately taken care of any missing spare pillow cases. Although we have not had any other complaints of “critter” sounds, corrective measures have been taken to eliminate any potential problem. As you can read from other reviews, the house is well outfitted. Please judge for yourself. Our listing page includes photos of all of the rooms in our house and the exterior. We believe that we offer a beautiful home and a beautiful and unique property for a reasonable and competitive rate.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

The house worked really well for us - we were three families with four kids between us (ages 1-4) Lovely neighborhood for us to take a long walk. Quick drive to Sierra with clear roads! Spacious and very clean/well-maintained house with updated bathrooms. Kitchen worked well for us to cook bfast/lunch and dinner. Lots of room for kids to run around and enjoy themselves. Only issue we had was with the heat or lack thereof in the two bedrooms above the garage. Adjusted the temperature nearly up to max but rooms were still a tad cold to sleep comfortably with a comforter. The heat also really dries the air out so carry a humidifier if you can (there was only one in the house)

All in all, great stay! We enjoyed ourselves and would love to return in the summer and enjoy the lovely backyard and the river.

Lovely home for families with toddlers

  • 5 of 5

The house worked really well for our five couples and their little toddlers. With young children, we knew we needed a place that would have sufficient space for them to run around safely. We also loved that the backyard was big and open enough for us to build our own mini sled runs for them and for them to play in the snow without the hassle of having to drive anywhere and lugging a bunch of snow gear.

A couple of things to be aware of about the house:

- All the knives are pretty dull, so I recommend bringing your own to use for cooking.

- No hairdryer, so bring your own if you need one.

- Checkout at 10am worked for us because we have young kiddos that get up early, but for those that don't, plan on needing to spend extra time to clean up because one of the requirements to check out is to have all dishes back in the cupboards (we are used to houses where we just need to start a load of dishes in the dishwasher and have no dishes in the sink/countertop). It just felt like we were responsible for more cleanup than other places we've rented.

All in all though, we had a lovely time and would come back here for another snow trip. Thanks for a great stay!

Owner's Response: Thanks Diana for the nice review and we are glad your family enjoyed their stay. Thanks for bringing the knives to our attention, we will have them sharpened immediately. And for clarification to others reading this post, our only requirements upon leaving, other than treating our home like it is your own, is that guests put games and dishes away and put all garbage out to the Bear Box outside.

Would gladly come again and rent this amazing cabin!

  • 5 of 5

The house and property was beautiful! We really enjoyed our stay there. House was very clean and well-kept. We had zero complaints about anything during our stay. And dealing with Mike was nothing but pleasant during all of my contacts with him. Would recommend Ray's Riverfront Retreat to anyone planning to spend some time in Tahoe!
