Having visited the Hawaiian islands various times over the years with my young children, we finally discovered the Big Island - totally fell in love with the island.... Hawi specifically, then realized that the 'dry side' had a lot to offer...
Jennifer Greggor purchased this estate in 2008
I purchased this property because of it's central location to all of what I think is the best that the Big Island has to offer. Mainly in all honesty because I realized for the first time in my life, I was able to make a major financial decision by myself - so I purchased an estate! Meanwhie, You can easily reach the volcano and Hilo side, the observatories at the summit, Kona, Waipio Valley, Puako, Hawi, the resorts, and beaches without having to overnight somewhere else. You can watch the ship traffic enter the harbor at Kawaihae or spend the day watching the whales from the house, (try and visit between December and March for the humpback whales.)
This home lends itself well to multi-generational family reunions, weddings, and events while maintaining the intimate feel for smaller family vacations. Since it sits on a large parcel of land, guests will enjoy the privacy and tranquility provided in a rural uncrowded setting surrounded by coconut palms and professional landscaping.
The Ohana home ( 2br / 2ba ) is on the same 6 acres and is great for hosting your inlaws or guests that want to be close to the event but separate from all the activity. Kohala Home . Big IslandEstate .
The house was easy to find with the direction provided. The path from the circular drive leads to a Koi pond by the front door. Keys were in a lock box and easily accessed. The home is high on the mountainside overlooking the beautiful pacific. We spent most of our time on the lanai and enjoyed watching the birds and whales breaching below. The weather was sunny, in the 80s every day with a beautiful breeze. A few mosquitoes at dusk, but nothing major. We watched the sunset over the ocean from the hot tub. The house itself is spacious and spotless. The pictures don't do it justice. There are two master suites with king beds, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both have huge bathrooms. There are two queen bedrooms with a shared bath, and a queen sofa bed in the den. We ate most of our meals on the lanai, where there is seating for 16. The kitchen is beautiful, although we did find there were a few tools missing that one might expect in a gourmet kitchen, such as a garlic press, Chef's knife, barbeque brush, and griddle. There is a media room with comfy recliners where we enjoyed watching the Patriots win the playoffs! There were beach towels and a lunch cooler provided. There is an additional guest room across the Koi pond if needed. The home is a bit out of the way (which is just the way we like it). It was about 40 minutes to Kailua Kona, 20 minutes to Waimea, 2 hours to Volcano, 10 minutes to Hapuna Beach. There is a small market close by, but better to do your main grocery shopping in Kona. There is so much to do on the Big Island. We went on a fishing charter, The beaches of course - Hapuna Beach and Waialea Bay Beach (Beach 69), Tide pools and sea turtles at Puako Beach, Pololu Valley lookout and hike down to black sand beach, Mauna Kea summit tour to see the observatories and stargazing - the skies are amazing!, snorkeling at Honaunau (Two Steps), shopping in Kailua, night snorkeling with manta rays (not to be missed!), Volcano National Park, Hiking Kilauea Iki, Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour over the volcano, Akaka Falls State Park, and Waipio Vally. And then of course, sitting on the lanai with a good book! Jenny & Mark were great were prompt with communication. We had a minor issue with the WiFi and they were easy to reach and very responsive. I would definitely recommend this home!
This house was perfect for our family reunion. Everyone had a bedroom and the kitchen and dining was large enough to accommodate all 10 of us. Fairly easy access to all of the island.
We rented this house with a family of 15 for Christmas and we had a wonderful time. The house is spacious and quiet, with a spectacular view of the sun setting over the ocean. The master bedroom and bath and the second floor bed and bath are enormous! In addition, there are two other bedrooms and a bath in the house and a bedroom in a small building across the breezeway from the front door. The house accommodated all 15 of us, with some children sleeping on mattresses, a sleeper couch and roll-away beds.
We spent time in the hot tub, reading on the front lawn, and cooking in the large kitchen. We ate on the patio every night as the sun set and the stars came out.
Our kids enjoyed the theater room and we all enjoyed the hot tub. Best of all, the house is close to the beautiful beaches of the Kona Coast (and just up the road from the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company) but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Kona to feel secluded and quiet. Thank you for a truly wonderful Christmas week in your beautiful home.
We rented this house as one of three used for a large family reunion in the area. We only needed it for the beds and showers, no meals were prepared here. When we travel, there are three basic needs we expect to be met by any lodging: 1) cleanliness; 2) good beds; 3) good bedding and towels. This place barely made it in the 'good beds' category and was completely lacking in the other two. It was not clean when we arrived, grit on the floors (we took shoes off and walked barefoot), dirt all around the laundry area, dust on the closet shelving where you unpack your clothing, etc. But worst of all was the bedding and towels. The beds had cheap polyester sheets, which in the July heat was very uncomfortable. We found one set of king cotton sheets, but they had holes in them. There were a minimum of bath towels for all the bedrooms and people this place should hold and NO hand towels or wash cloths. We called the owner and they made some excuse about 'quick turnaround' from the previous renter so we expected the rest of the linens to be brought by later - but they never showed up.
It's a good thing we weren't planning to eat meals here. The dining table seats four people. Overall the place is very cheaply built and poorly maintained. Skimpy and tacky furnishings. Certainly not worth the price we paid for it!
Hey Jenny - I meant to e-mail you before now to just let you know how much
we enjoyed staying at the Ohana House for my niece's wedding. We especially
loved the screened veranda - we loved the breeze blowing through the house -
although at times it gusted and surprised us!!! Loved watching the clouds
and hearing the birds. I thought I could live there permanently - so quiet
- like you said.
We could not have asked for more than this home! This home fit our needs perfectly with our 4 kids, 2 parents that stayed in the home, and up to 9 other guests that visited for cookouts :) My now wife and I chose this house, because it would easily hold our families and friends for our weekly wedding events and it couldn't have been more perfect! Each kid had a room, and the adults each had master bedrooms that are absolutely enormous! And what views! The pics don't do it justice! You have views as far as the eyes can see, and wonderful views of the deep blue ocean!
We enjoyed the huge covered patio for cookouts with up to 17, and never felt crowded or cramped! Honestly there couldn't have been a better home for our family and our friends who came and visited. The location was ideal as well! We weren't in the hustle and bustle of a city like Kona, but we were close enough to go and do. Shopping, groceries, and food were a mere 10 minute drive away. The kids loved the Koi pond, and so did we. What an amazing way to walk up to the home and just relax.
I know when we come back to the Big Island, this will be our home away from home once again!
