Accommodations: Hand Hued Log Cabin, 1 bedroom, 2 bathroom (sleeps 6) Mulatto Mountain Hideaway, located near Fleetwood, NC, is a great gateway to a memorable mountain vacation in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Our cabin was completed in the Spring of 2009, and is ready to welcome you to the Appalachian Mountains for a long weekend, a week, or a month away from it all.

'The Great Escape' offers a large, upper-level master bedroom with a King sized bed, as well as a full bath with a Jacuzzi tub and vanity with granite counter top, and a walk-in cedar closet. An upper level 15'x32' spacious deck provides a four place Hot Tub/Spa, two place swing, glider rocker, picnic table, and LP Gas Grill. A second spacious bathroom is located on the first level with an adjoining wet/dry sauna, and a two car garage. Additional amenities include a gas burning fireplace with a remote, flat screen TV with a blue ray DVD, two Ikea sleeper sofas, two large 5'x6' windows facing to the East and West, two large sliding glass doors leading to a spacious deck with panoramic bird's eye views from 3800 feet of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain, a large well equipped kitchen with an eight foot bar, wormy maple cabinets, and granite counter tops, an expandable antique dining table, and front loader washer and dryer. The cabin has a southern pine T&G interior throughout with oak hard wood flooring, and cathedral ceilings in the kitchen/dining area and sitting area where you will be able to feel the warmth

Treat yourself to the casual atmosphere fine dining of Crippen's Country Inn & Restaurant in Blowing Rock. Located in a quaint, Southern, side-street cottage, you will dine on an absolutely artistic creation designed for the season. Don't miss Canyon's Restaurant, the view is priceless!! Canyon's is inconspicuously built on a ridge where you can enjoy a burger, and a million dollar view! You cannot leave Blowing Rock without a stroll downtown where you have to visit Kilwin's homemade ice cream and candy store on Main Street, and let the kids play in the park which is the centerpiece of Main Street.

In Ashe County NC you can enjoy virtually any outdoor activity you can think of. Everything from fishing, biking, hiking, whitewater rafting, to skiing and golf can be found in and around Ashe County. Kayaking the New River is as easy as traveling the short distance to Riverside Kayak and Bike Rentals where they have kayaks, tubes, bikes, and horses. More adventurous activities can be found by rafting the Watauga or Nolichucky Rivers, spelunking the Linville Caverns, or hiking the Linville Gorge, all of which are within 40 minutes of Fleetwood. And, don't miss the most visited destination in NC, Grandfather Mountain, which can usually be seen from the cabin, with the mile high swinging bridge, the animal park, and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a favorite spot for many people. You can look out over the many overlooks and see miles and miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Enjoy biking, hiking, camping, and many other activities.

About Howard Shipman

Howard lives in the Florida Keys, and has three grown kids. He is a retired Commercial Airline Pilot, and retired USAF Pilot. Howard is a NC native. He enjoys the natural beauty, fresh air, and wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains while trekking and biking.

Howard Shipman purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Howard Shipman chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

I was looking to build an all wooden cabin with modern conveniences in a location that provided the best long range mountain views The Smokey Mountains had to offer, yet close to places to go for dining and activities. Southern Ashe County, 20 minutes from Boone, and close to West Jefferson, was the ideal place.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy, Long Range panoramic views of The Great Smoky Mountains from 3800 feet.

Absolute wonderful time.

We cannot begin to describe how great of a time and how great of a place 'The Great Escape' is. Everything one could need is there. The booking experience and service throughout the trip was superb. Everything was clean and felt like home. The views are amazing and after spending a day at Grandfather Mountain, it makes you appreciate "him" from the deck even more. The garage and space within provides the perfect shelter for vehicles, as well as a great space to play pool. The location of the hot tub is ideal, with only a few steps out of the back door. We hated leaving but will most certainly be back. Thank you for allowing us to have a great vacation!

Great remote getaway with amazing views!

This truly is a great escape. The cabin is fully furnished and offers everything you need for your stay. The view is one of a kind and the amenities of the cabin make your stay more relaxing such as the hot tub, sauna, and gas fireplace. Only thing I would recommend is to have a 4wd vehicle as the dirt road to the cabin can be Steep.

Owner's Response: Thank you Nicole and Nicholas for finding the time to leave your wonderful remarks regarding your stay at The Great Escape. I am very pleased you hear you enjoyed the amenities and the views of The Blue Ridge Mountains the cabin's location provide, both from the deck and every location within the cabin, except the upstairs bathroom. I hope you found the time to venture out to some of the local State and Federal Parks, and to downtown West Jefferson, and perhaps beyond to Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, and Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls. There are things to enjoy regardless of the Season. I agree that driving an AWD or 4WD vehicle anytime makes the drive up the mountain much easier, but it is even more advisable during the Winter months when the drive can be made more challenging due to the possibility of snow and ice. I do hope you guys will have a chance to return again in the very near future.

This was our second stay at the Great Escape and we were just as pleased this time as the last time. Can't beat the view and the cabin is so nice and well appointed, we did not need a thing.

A get-away delight! Thanks, Howard!

If you love the wilderness with all the comforts of home, you'll love this place. From the steamy mist of the jacuzzi, we enjoyed the majestic views of the mountain range and the sounds of a Barred owl in the evening while the welcome cool, fresh mountain breeze swept through the trees into our faces. Howard's advertised picture from the porch says it all. The cabin is clean and nicely secluded with all the amenities you could possibly want in the middle of forest on a mountain slope. Howard was very friendly and accommodating with prompt response on booking, and ample instructions and contact information in case you need anything. Everything went swimmingly but it's a nice reassurance. Our security deposit was promptly refunded the following day as well. Don't be fooled by the gravel access roads as there is a paradise waiting for you at the end. The gravel access roads extend up the mountain about 2 miles to the cabin. I'd recommend bringing a cooler and bringing all your food and drink with you if you want to maximize your time at the cabin. Traveling the gravel access roads is fine if you go slow and navigate smartly. You'll be going 2 mph if you care about your vehicle. If you come during periods of snow and ice, I would only take AWD or 4WD as Howard suggests. Thank you Howard for sharing your cabin with us and others to enjoy!

Owner's Response: Thank you Steven and Brenda for your very poetic description of your experiences at The Great Escape. I do not think Walt Whitman could have said it any better. I am very pleased that you enjoyed the Spa, and the panoramic views of The Blue Ridge Mountains while enjoying the Spa, and hanging out on the deck with the swing built for two and the picnic table for your meals in the cool mountain air. The 1.5 miles of gravel roads to the cabin from the paved road, can be an experience, especially if you are not used to driving on gravel mountain roads. It was interesting that you chose to drive very slowly, which would be fine on the first 0.9 miles that is relatively flat. However once you start the climb up the South side of the mountain, I would suggest about 15-20 mph in order to have a little momentum through the steeper part of the last 0.6 miles to the cabin. Once you have one or two trips up the mountain under your belt, you will figure out that this is the best strategy, and to stay as far to the left as you go up the mountain as possible. I have to agree that the somewhat adventurous trip up the mountain is worthy all the effort when you arrive at the cabin. I do hope you guys will find the time to return again soon!!!

In less than 30 minutes travel time, you can cover the 20 miles to Boone, drive 8 more miles to Blowing Rock. West Jefferson is only 10 miles away. The home of Appalachian State University and the Mountaineers (Go ASU!!), Boone offers the casual atmosphere of a college town. Walk the downtown area to find antique shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, and coffee shops. Cafe Portofino & the Tap Room and The Black Cat Burrito are two of our favorite restaurants. Once an old hardware store, Farmer's Hardware has been converted into terrific emporium shops, located on King St in Boone. The converted hardware store to emporium shops are fabulous. Convenient for purchasing Vera Bradley Products, pottery, fashion jewelry, greeting cards, candy, toys...what you don't have!!!! The detail for renovations to the old building is great, and the friendly staff make this a must when visiting downtown Boone. Also, don't miss the Mast General Store across the street.

Other Activities: Boating, kayaking, snowboarding, rock climbing
