About the property

1 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Location: Near Fleetwood, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA (Mountain side cabin at 3800 feet near the New River.)

Accommodations: Hand Hued Log Cabin, 1 bedroom, 2 bathroom (sleeps 6) Mulatto Mountain Hideaway, located near Fleetwood, NC, is a great gateway to a memorable mountain vacation in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Our cabin was completed in the Spring of 2009, and is ready to welcome you to the Appalachian Mountains for a long weekend, a week, or a month away from it all.

'The Great Escape' offers a large, upper-level master bedroom with a King sized bed, as well as a full bath with a Jacuzzi tub and vanity with granite counter top, and a walk-in cedar closet. An upper level 15'x32' spacious deck provides a four place Hot Tub/Spa, two place swing, glider rocker, picnic table, and LP Gas Grill. A second spacious bathroom is located on the first level with an adjoining wet/dry sauna, and a two car garage. Additional amenities include a gas burning fireplace with a remote, flat screen TV with a blue ray DVD, two Ikea sleeper sofas, two large 5'x6' windows facing to the East and West, two large sliding glass doors leading to a spacious deck with panoramic bird's eye views from 3800 feet of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain, a large well equipped kitchen with an eight foot bar, wormy maple cabinets, and granite counter tops, an expandable antique dining table, and front loader washer and dryer. The cabin has a southern pine T&G interior throughout with oak hard wood flooring, and cathedral ceilings in the kitchen/dining area and sitting area where you will be able to feel the warmth

Treat yourself to the casual atmosphere fine dining of Crippen's Country Inn & Restaurant in Blowing Rock. Located in a quaint, Southern, side-street cottage, you will dine on an absolutely artistic creation designed for the season. Don't miss Canyon's Restaurant, the view is priceless!! Canyon's is inconspicuously built on a ridge where you can enjoy a burger, and a million dollar view! You cannot leave Blowing Rock without a stroll downtown where you have to visit Kilwin's homemade ice cream and candy store on Main Street, and let the kids play in the park which is the centerpiece of Main Street.

In Ashe County NC you can enjoy virtually any outdoor activity you can think of. Everything from fishing, biking, hiking, whitewater rafting, to skiing and golf can be found in and around Ashe County. Kayaking the New River is as easy as traveling the short distance to Riverside Kayak and Bike Rentals where they have kayaks, tubes, bikes, and horses. More adventurous activities can be found by rafting the Watauga or Nolichucky Rivers, spelunking the Linville Caverns, or hiking the Linville Gorge, all of which are within 40 minutes of Fleetwood. And, don't miss the most visited destination in NC, Grandfather Mountain, which can usually be seen from the cabin, with the mile high swinging bridge, the animal park, and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a favorite spot for many people. You can look out over the many overlooks and see miles and miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Enjoy biking, hiking, camping, and many other activities.

About Howard Shipman

Howard lives in the Florida Keys, and has three grown kids. He is a retired Commercial Airline Pilot, and retired USAF Pilot. Howard is a NC native. He enjoys the natural beauty, fresh air, and wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains while trekking and biking.

Howard Shipman purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Howard Shipman chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

I was looking to build an all wooden cabin with modern conveniences in a location that provided the best long range mountain views The Smokey Mountains had to offer, yet close to places to go for dining and activities. Southern Ashe County, 20 minutes from Boone, and close to West Jefferson, was the ideal place.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy, Long Range panoramic views of The Great Smoky Mountains from 3800 feet.

Spectacular!

A beautiful home with a breathtaking view. 500+miles from home, and felt like we were at home. Can't recommend this home, or the town highly enough. Totally happy, and want to go back... now.

Owner's Response: Thank you Andrea for finding the time to send your wonderful comments regarding your one week stay at The Great Escape. I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed the long range views of The Blue Ridge Mountains. I tried to design the cabin so the views would be available from almost every location in the cabin, plus the large deck with the Spa, swing, picnic table and glider rocker. I am very glad that the cabin and its location made you feel at home. I do hope you will plan to return many times in the future.

Beautiful house and scenery is amazing.

  • 5 of 5

Only downside for me was the road going up there. Definitely you need an AWD vehicle.

Because, whoever goes there, we r not used to drive on that type of gravel road.

The Great Escape

  • 5 of 5

The Great Escape is an awesome find. You will not find a place to rent in the mountains with more privacy or a better view. If your looking for a get away to relax and enjoy the mountains there's not a better place. Your about 20 minutes from an awesome, brand new Ingles grocery store in beautiful West Jefferson. It's a mile and a half up the side of a mountain from the main road. When you get there you'll agree its worth the drive. The owner takes his BMW but I don't recommend that. I prefer something a little higher off the ground. I highly recommend this property. I was there in August. I can't wait to go back in the winter.

Some helpful information

  • 4 of 5

First, all the 5 star reviews about The Great Escape are true! It is a wonderful place, and all the raves are warranted. But I have a little additional information that might be helpful to renters. We had a heck of a time getting up the road to the house. When we were there (July) the road was terrible. It wouldn't be difficult I suppose for a 4 wheel drive vehicle but we had a Volvo station wagon. So be forewarned and check with Howard about the condition of the road. I also wasn't aware that there are about 20 stairs up from the basement to the living area. Our old fat dog had a hard time with them, because they're steep and slippery. These things said, we had a wonderful time (we only ventured down the road once during the week we were there). Everything in the house is great and the view is tremendous!

Owner's Response: Thank you Paulette and Jeff for taking the time to leave your comments regarding your adventures at The Great Escape. I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed the cabin, its amenities and the views of The Blue Ridge Mountains its location provides. The roads to the cabin consists of 1.5 miles of private gravel roads. I highly recommend that my guests drive an AWD or 4WD vehicle to the cabin in the Winter months from 1 Dec to 1 April due to the possibility of snow or ice. During the other Seasons of the year, the roads are passable for 2WD, FWD, or RWD vehicles; however, AWD or 4WD would also be preferred due to the damage the frequent rains do to the roads from day to day, and to prevent damage to the roads themself. Most guests consider the drive to the cabin part of the adventure, especially those familiar with driving on gravel roads; however, there are also those few who are not familiar with gravel roads who consider the drive too much of a challenge. The cabin is constructed in two levels. The first level has garage space for two vehicle, a 3/4 bathroom with a corner shower, a wet/dry Sauna, a small pool table, and an exercise machine. The main living area is 16.5 feet over the garage, with access from the garage and also steps to the deck on the South side of the cabin. Be prepared to get a little exercise. The elevation of the cabin is what opens up the fantastic views of The Blue Ridge Mountains from The Blue Ridge Parkway to Grandfather Mountain, but the adventure may be too much for some. You have to decide.

In less than 30 minutes travel time, you can cover the 20 miles to Boone, drive 8 more miles to Blowing Rock. West Jefferson is only 10 miles away. The home of Appalachian State University and the Mountaineers (Go ASU!!), Boone offers the casual atmosphere of a college town. Walk the downtown area to find antique shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, and coffee shops. Cafe Portofino & the Tap Room and The Black Cat Burrito are two of our favorite restaurants. Once an old hardware store, Farmer's Hardware has been converted into terrific emporium shops, located on King St in Boone. The converted hardware store to emporium shops are fabulous. Convenient for purchasing Vera Bradley Products, pottery, fashion jewelry, greeting cards, candy, toys...what you don't have!!!! The detail for renovations to the old building is great, and the friendly staff make this a must when visiting downtown Boone. Also, don't miss the Mast General Store across the street.

Other Activities: Boating, kayaking, snowboarding, rock climbing
