The Victorian cottage with a mansard roof and contemporary addition has been restored to its stately charm with original art, orientals, 100 year-old wood floors, antique fixtures as well as all modern amenities -- granite counter tops, top kitchen and laundry appliances, three flat screen tvs with cable and wi-fi, surround sound, and soaring ceilings throughout. The downstairs layout is open for entertaining and communal cooking, with a bright, modern addition overlooking the sprawling yard to the pond. Three full bathrooms, including one on the ground floor. Bedrooms (4) offer a king, queen, a double, and a bunk bed with twin and double on bottom (crib available). Enjoy al fresco dining on the large stone patio just outside the kitchen.
Set on an idyllic one acre property with a secluded duck pond, the mansard enjoys partial views of the mouth of the harbor and includes a separate 10 X 12 writing studio with high-speed internet and views of a wildflower meadow and pond. Additionally, a 'wreck house' with toys galore is on the property and is available for recreational use during the daytime. An elliptical machine is also available, and a basketball hoop, boxing bags, swings, trampoline, etc. Our four nieces/nephews next door are welcome to use the space, so the wreck house is for community fun. It is a real delight on a stormy day!

These are just four of the 13 cousins who vacation every year together in Maine!
Catherine Baker-Pitts, PhD purchased this estate in 2005
When we were blissfully full of ourselves and thought no task too big, we set our minds to creating a home on MDI (following our magical summer wedding on the island). Our rationale was to be able to enjoy our family in the area and the beautiful retreat all year round with our growing families. Catherine spent much of her early life in Maine, and we wanted our future children to enjoy the natural beauty and relaxed environment, a perfect respite from our city life. This home was our first big undertaking as a couple, and we labored over its restoration, which we realized was more massive each day following the purchase (for instance, once we realized it had not been insulated, we were back to ground zero). The huge bonus is that our three sons consider it utopia with four cousins next door and, if you have children, they will have immediate playmates on the property.
We try to force ourselves out of our yard, where we have created endless activities, such as ball games, rope swings, tightrope walks, and sprinklers. As of 2014, we have added both a glass addition and another structure, a 1000 sq ft clubhouse (or 'wreck house' as we call it) with its own bathroom and kitchen, as well as a spacious sleeping loft, for kids. Will spent the summer of 2010 constructing a slate patio out back with some helping hands, while the kids reveled in the dirt pile. Our visitors remind us to take a book to the hammock or enjoy the mountain view from the adirondack chairs. But not surprisingly, the best view is from the mountaintops, so we try to hike almost every day. The open kitchen, with a door to the outside from both homes, allows for festive entertaining.
We feel the good vibes here in your comfortable and lovely home. We especially love all the "little peeks" of Maine's countryside. It's great here!
