Perfect Setting

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house with a few friends to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday, and it was absolutely perfect. The historic house has so much character while also meeting every need. We only wish we could have stayed longer, and cannot wait to come back!

Enough with the notes....

  • 2 of 5

My family stayed here recently and were dismayed by the number of notes and instructions in the house admonishing guests to BE CAREFUL or THIS IS THE OWNER'S PERSONAL BLENDER--BE CAREFUL. Many doors and cabinets were locked, which is fine, but coupled with the unfriendly notes and list of rules written in an inhospitable manner it was really off-putting. As soon as we arrived, we were also instructed to sign a list of house rules to obey. It was almost as though the owners hate to rent out their place but are forced to, so they've compromised by leaving these notes. When I rent a home, I like to feel like an invited and welcome guest....I've rented many homes in Sonoma and never experienced anything quite like this. Although the property manager was very nice, we won't be returning to this property.

Owner's Response: Julie, we are sorry you were dismayed by the brief Check-In Packet of information that we provide for renters, and are confused by your comments. The Welcome note simply includes helpful information about the local area and the historic home, local taxi service, how-to tips on connecting to the wi-fi, the TV controllers, and so on. All our renters seem to find it helpful and appreciate knowing about the surrounding wine country, as well as providing answers to questions one might not think of at the moment, plus providing check-out information. Rather than having to take the time for a longer familiarization tour of the large home and cottage at check-in, this allows them to relax and enjoy their stay immediately, and have something readily available to refer to if they have questions. The exact same information was also emailed to you prior to your arrival so you could review it and ask any questions ahead of your rental. As for the brief Rules Acknowledgement form, we do require renters to acknowledge they are aware there is no cover on the pool, no smoking or pets are allowed, and other information for the safety and comfort of renters. Most owners of expensive homes request that renters respect their personal property, and it’s unfortunate you found that “unfriendly, inhospitable, and off-putting.” We wish you luck on your future rentals and hope you enjoy your stay elsewhere.

Memorial Day Awesomeness!

AMAZING House! Perfect for 4 couples. There were so many places to sit together inside and outside. The rooms were big and the furnishings were unique and tasteful. The beds are SUPER comfortable! We can't wait to book this place again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review – we think it’s pretty comfortable too! In fact, we’ve just created a new seating area – sadly, a couple stately pine trees had to be cut down, but we saved the huge stumps and created 2 large seating areas out on the knoll overlooking Sonoma Valley. We welcome you back to try it out!

Reunion

  • 5 of 5

Eight girlfriends from high school spent a wonderful weekend at this lovely home. The views were stunning, the pool and grounds were big and beautiful and I stayed with 3 others in the casita behind the home. I liked being in the separate quarters for morning coffee with a few girls, because all we really wanted to do in the house was talk, talk, talk. There were so many cool places to sit together inside and outside. The rooms were big and the furnishings were unique and tasteful. Very close to drive to Sonoma square. Everyone raved about the house. I would recommend it to adults who can appreciate all the quality and history of the home.

visually stunning, however.......

  • 2 of 5

The property was actually visually EXTRAORDINARLIY beautiful. There were 360 degree views out of every window and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The interior of the house had lovely antiques and a country kitchen with almost anything you would need in order to cook at home, which we did a number of times. 5* would seem to be the correct rating. But then there was the water and the septic system. We were told the water was potable even though it smelled metallic or worse. I used it to make coffee just once and looked in the back of the coffee maker. It was caked with black and disgusting. I bought bottled water after that which we used to drink and brush our teeth and if we could have, we would have bathed in bottled water, too. The water smelled terrible and had black and brown stuff floating in it. My husband and I showered in the casita, where our son and daughter-in-law were staying, because our master in the main house had only a tub and the water coming out of the faucet was smelly and brown with particles in it. Something was surely going on with the septic system, since someone was out there to look at it during our stay. We were there for a week with a baby and assumed the house would have a washer and dryer, which it didn't, but we were actually OK that it didn't because the water was so disgusting. So that's why the 2* rating. I know there was a drought going on but there was also something awry with the septic system.

In conclusion, when my son went to the airport, he was SERIOUSLY searched by TSA people because he didn't pass the test for explosives. They asked him if he worked on a farm. It had to have been the water.

The place was magnificent, in many ways 100% 5*, however, the water and the septic were a real problem. I suppose if you were staying only a night or two and eating meals out, it would be heaven (if you didn't care about a shower) but as a family there for a week, it was a problem. I waited four months to write this review because I was torn but in the end decided I had to do it.

Also, the deck off the casita is a mess. It absolutely needs to be refinished or replaced. And trust me, we never even opened the hot tub knowing what the water was like in the house and the casita.

Sorry for the terrible review......*****visually and zero * olfactorily = ** for me.

Owner's Response: We appreciate your positive comments, but are dismayed with your lengthy negative comments, which seem to focus on water quality during your stay 4 months ago. Rural Sonoma homes are on a well, not chemically treated city water like yours in Atlanta. Our valley soils have a high mineral content, and with the ongoing California drought it can result in a mineral odor. Living in the country, we are used to this. We’re glad you were happy with showering in the cottage, which is puzzling, since all the water on the property is from the same well (and the main house even has an additional double-filter system on incoming water). We bathe in the water daily and have never had an airport TSA “farm problem” on our extensive travels. For those who prefer, large jugs of Brita filtered water are in both the cottage and main house refers, plus a dedicated faucet at the house kitchen sink with further-filtered water. We are highly offended that you imply something is wrong with the septic system and there is some sort of crossover into the water – that is absurd. The septic tank is 5,000 yds. below the house & is at least 1,000 yds. from the well – and if someone came to check the system, it was simply our routine quarterly inspection to ensure everything is continuing to run smoothly (with a history of zero problems). We apologize if the bath tub had a few iron particles when turning on the water. If this particular tub is not used for a while, a few can break free from the iron pipes in this older home, but they are not harmful and are easily drained out by running the water. As for the Hot Tub, it is serviced weekly - and the posted Use Instructions require a special tablet be dropped in after use to maintain sanitized conditions. We try to be honest and open in our vrbo listing and communication/information. Perhaps you didn’t read the Rental Agreement that you signed when you initially booked the home: “WATER AND SEPTIC: The home and cottage are on well and septic systems. The mineral content in the water is high. The well water is safe for drinking but during certain times of the year has a mineral taste and odor. The septic system is tested quarterly.” Should future renters be concerned by this inflamed report, we ask you to please contact us to discuss your concerns. We have 6 years of very successful rentals and pride ourselves in the many happy times our renters have had at our lovely country home.
