This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath for two couples traveling together.
Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.
The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and bbq grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.
This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.
There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house is a fun day time getaway for all ages. So much to explore here!
There is also a two room casita/guesthouse across the driveway with a double and twin bed, lights and heat for overflow guests at an additional cost of $25 per person per night.Guests here can take advantage of the two full baths inside the main house--towels and robes provided
For the adventurous the tree house and an Airstream trailer are delightful summer spaces (at the $25 per person fee) The tree house has two twins on main floor and a queen in the loft. There is a shaded deck with pasture views. It is built around a huge heritage apple tree.
The Airstream is 1971 vintage with lots of privacy in the back pasture. Big covered porch with mountain views. The interior has been fully remodeled and has a double bed in front room and a twin down the hallway.
***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.
This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.
It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.
Melissa Serfling purchased this house in 2005
I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.
Peace and quiet with good proximity to town, comfortable and cozy and so many fun things to see.
Melissa, I found this rock on the trail while hiking into the
Gorge yesterday. It made me think of you and your awesome style! You inspire!!
When we arrived the house smelled very sour. We had to let it air out. The next day, the septic tank was not working properly. Owner was very responsive however in getting that fixed. We planned on making coffee-I had to scrape the coffee and grime off the coffee maker and run ACV through it several times...by then I was disgusted and didn't want any coffee. There are sharp objects, no gates avail to protect kids from hot stoves and dirt/spiderwebs everywhere not suitable for a younger child to be nearby. My other daughter found her way to the "sex" section of the library which I was not very happy about. Snakes...sure if you love them...there were about 50 (not kidding) all over the patio. Had we been warned, it might have been a little bit less of a surprise and we would not have rented the casita knowing our guests could not handle the snakes. Our guests left because they were certain they would land in the casita overnight. The casita was also filled with spiderwebs, piles of dirt on the bed and smelled. Hot tub on day one had slime in it. After it was treated, there were so many chemicals in it we couldn't use it. In fact, it ruined the lenses of my glasses I had on, the chemicals and steam on the lenses caused the lenses to actually decay.
Worst trip ever and worst stay I have ever had on VRBO. Initially, the owner seemed nice, but after I called about a few things (septic tank, lack of enough towels, hot tub and misinformation about rental), she insulted me and where we are currently living, which I found funny because I am a NM native.
There is a BEAUTIFUL luxury spa/hotel down the road-I would highly recommend that. Same price, clean, no snakes, usable hot tub and nice service there, whereas this place is lacking.
This property was way more than we expected. It was secluded well enough to feel really private. The house alone had such a classy south western style décor to it. The beds were super comfortable. The rest of the property was really well landscaped in a way that felt like a piece of paradise. The hot tub was a very nice treat after a day of site seeing. We are already looking forward to our next stay here. Melissa was very friendly and made us feel very welcomed on her property. Thank you so much for that!
Thank you, Melissa, for sharing your beautiful property with us. It made our two day Taos vacation unforgettable. It was nice to have all the place settings for dinner, as I made a big family dinner the last night which was really special. Everybody had so much fun. The cable didn't work, but we had internet, so my husband was able to stream from his computer. No big deal! Thanks again.. XOXO
My husband and I were looking for a getaway with our two little dogs and 10 month old baby. This was the perfect getaway for what were looking for. We wanted to stay somewhere that my husband and I could enjoy the property a bit once the baby went to bed. Each night we made a fire in outside kiva fireplace. It was fun, relaxing, and there was plenty of wood stocked. Just watch out for the lilac bush - it hangs low over the fireplace and could burn easily if you let your fire get too big. We also relaxed in the hot tub each night (bath robes provided). The grounds are beautiful and decorated with a fun, artsy flair. It is also fairly private which was nice for us getting out of the city. There was so much to explore and we enjoyed puttering around outside while the baby took a nap. The grounds are not fenced are there are nearby neighbors (although it doesn't feel like it!) so if you bring pets, keep an eye out. Everything was well furnished inside, including the kitchen - we found everything we needed to make a full breakfast. Melissa was very easy to work with, responded quickly, and was also very accommodating. We will definitely come back here when we come back to Taos. We enjoyed eating out at the Bavarian which is on the mountain. We also enjoyed the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and the Great Sand Dune National Park on the way. The only thing that was not provided was shampoo and we had to go out and buy some, so bring your own. However, there was delicious smelling soap to use and a nice bathtub for bathing a baby (and myself). Enjoy your stay if you are looking for a little Taos oasis getaway.
My friend and I and our two preschoolers had a terrific time! We echo all of the positive descriptions of this bucolic retreat from other reviews. We rented last minute, and everything went super smoothly. One thing to note for families with young children - the house is filled with wonderful art and whimsical items, but unlike other rentals we did not have to run around and put away delicate and breakable art. As my friend said, "this house is sturdy" and seemed like it has been well-loved by families over time. Will definitely come again!
This place is like a compound and it's great! Very eclectic and homey. We were a mixed group of ten people for a long weekend and it was perfect. Everybody had a bed and they are comfy and warm. The kitchen was well stocked and there was lots of firewood for the fireplaces. The treehouse is adorable and the whole place is super quiet and relaxing. Would definitely return.
If you are looking for total privacy in a rural setting, yet a 10 minute walk to town or -2 minute drive, this is the home for you... An amazing 'Truly Taos' home
