About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath for two couples traveling together.

Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.

The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and bbq grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.

This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.

There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house is a fun day time getaway for all ages. So much to explore here!

There is also a two room casita/guesthouse across the driveway with a double and twin bed, lights and heat for overflow guests at an additional cost of $25 per person per night.Guests here can take advantage of the two full baths inside the main house--towels and robes provided

For the adventurous the tree house and an Airstream trailer are delightful summer spaces (at the $25 per person fee) The tree house has two twins on main floor and a queen in the loft. There is a shaded deck with pasture views. It is built around a huge heritage apple tree.

The Airstream is 1971 vintage with lots of privacy in the back pasture. Big covered porch with mountain views. The interior has been fully remodeled and has a double bed in front room and a twin down the hallway.

***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.

This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.

It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

About Melissa /Taos mgr.

I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.

Melissa /Taos mgr. purchased this house in 2005

Why Melissa /Taos mgr. chose New Mexico

I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.

What makes this house unique

Peace and quiet with good proximity to town, comfortable and cozy and so many fun things to see.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Farmhouse Escape

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time exploring the property and loved the hot tub and fire places. The main house was very spacious and had more than everything we needed. Melissa was responsive if we needed anything (we got lost driving there..). We loved all of the quirky touches and are thinking about coming back someday!

Cute and Rustic

  • 5 of 5

I have been coming to Taos for over three decades & I have many family members here so I know the area and what the Taos "experience" is. This cute home has many cool features that other reviewers have already commented about and it's definitely going to give you a real taste of Taos with some nice perks (location, ambiance, etc.). My quick advice for those looking to rent a Taos home is to just be aware of what you want vs. what the house is (this is a unique area of the country) and you can't go wrong in your VRBO Taos search. Thanks!

Beautiful spot for our 1st Anniversary!

  • 5 of 5

We loved every moment in this lovely and whimsical home! The kitchen was amazing to cook in and where I spent the majority of my time. We were both able to take a deep breath and focus on each other while letting the world and all it's drama slip away. The grounds were great to explore and we enjoyed watching the horses in the field next door. It is quite close to town and centrally located no matter where in Taos you want to go. We will absolutely be back!

Unique rural property with adobe home, tree house, and hot tub one mile from town

  • 5 of 5

This property is perfect for those seeking a true sense of living in the high desert but with the convenience of being close to all that the Enchanted Circle, and particularly Taos, has to offer. We were able to snowshoe, cross-country, and downhill everyday from this great location. You are minutes from the Plaza and the Pueblo, and within an hour of an incredible variety of terrain, from the Rio Grande gorge to the highest peak in the state. Melissa's taste and decorating talent surrounds you with the Southwest even when you are indoors. We had many unusual challenges on our holiday family vacation due to airlines, weather, and plumbing but our host Melissa was steadfast and responsive throughout! We found the people of Taos to be exceptionally friendly and accommodating, and look forward to returning and staying in one of Melissa's properties.

A note about travel insurance: Our trip was delayed three days by the airlines due to a flight cancellation. This resulted in a trip "interruption" which is NOT covered by the Home Away policy with CNA. Read the policy but we would not recommend purchasing. We have purchased it for many years mistakenly thinking we were covered for this routine occurance.

Beautiful place to reset

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter, dog and I stayed here for the Thanksgiving break. We were looking for a place to reset, reflect and relax, and this house was the perfect venue to accomplish these things. The home was warm, cozy and unique and the property was a lot of fun to explore (there are little rooms all over the property and the treehouse is super cool). Our dog loved running around the acreage and exploring, as well. Beyond the house, Taos is lovely and the hiking is great. We hope to return soon.

A great escape. Fun for kids and adults.

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have been here. We come here to stay and make day trips to Chama to ride the train. No hassles with this place. It's just a beautiful property inside and outside. The main house is the only one we have stayed in and its decorated wonderfully. The tree house out back is fabulous and we've spent more than one night up there. Kids love it. The property itself is tucked away but not too far away from town. There are other buildings on the property that have lots of character too, and the plants and flowers and outdoor art objects make the place fun wherever you turn.
