About Catherine Larson
Having summered in Maine for practically my entire life, Kill Kare is a home and a haven for me. I grew up in the girls' summer camp - Camp Four Winds - that my mother started in 1946 and ran for over 50 years that was just up the lake from the cottage. As a result, I have grown to love and deeply appreciate the beauty and serenity of the Maine coast and all that it has to offer. It is my family's wish to share this treasure with you.
Catherine Larson purchased this Cottage in 1917
Why Catherine Larson chose Sedgwick
My grandparents built Kill Kare Kamp in 1917 as a fishing cabin. My mother and her brother grew up there in the summers as did my sister and I and our son is the fourth generation of our family to have called Kill Kare home. My grandmother and mother filled the cottage with antiques that create a warm and welcoming ambiance. And, my grandfather, my uncle and our son caught the fish that are over the mantle of the great fieldstone fireplace in the living room. If you look closely at the door jamb by the porch, you'll see years' worth of kids' heights marked on it. The cottage is imbued with my family's love of the place.
What makes this Cottage unique
Living right on the water is a unique privilege not accorded to everyone. Kill Kare could not be built today because of environmental restrictions so we feel particularly fortunate to have been able to enjoy this venerable house for a century. We celebrated Kill Kare's 100th year in 2017. Sitting on the expansive, wrap-around porch, you feel as though you are on your own private yacht. Nightly sunsets are a treat as are the brightly lit heavens that follow with stars so bright they seem within reach. The lake is ideal for swimming, boating and fishing. And the picturesque maritime village that dot the Down East Maine coast are within an easy drive. Check out our online Renter's Guide - the 'Guide' link on our website - for our suggestions on what to do and see in the area. This is truly lakeside living at its best.

A spiritual and magical get away.
This was the most relaxing vacation I have ever been on because of the cottage and the lake. It was quiet, peaceful, beautiful and fantastic. The home was like something out of a Robert Frost poem with a view from the eyes of Norman Rockwell. There was peace there as all you needed to do was sit on the porch and listen to the lake to decompress. The sound of the loons was spiritual and when you looked into the sky you were always looking for this majestic eagle to fly by and he didn't disappoint you if you were patient. It was relaxing to just fish, kayak, or canoe on the lake, We never left the property unless it was to go get supplies and food like lobster or clams. But what topped it all off were the sunsets that you became excited for to end the day and the beautiful night sky filled with endless stars. This was magical and this vacation and location were truly fantastic.
Thank you, Jo-Ann, for this most wonderful review of Kill Kare! Dan and I are so delighted that you, Frank and Hazel discovered us and found your visit with us to be so meaningful. It's always a pleasure to have such lovely guests who arrive as strangers and leave as friends. You and Frank (and Hazel - a uniquely sweet dog who has happily found her forever home with you) understood the Kill Kare experience and therefore could benefit from its magic. You found its soul. My grandfather was very prescient in naming Kill Kare because you really can kill your "kares" by just sitting on the porch and taking in the beauty of the surroundings. And, I agree, there is something spiritual in being so close to nature. I hope that our paths will cross again! In the meantime, may the peace you found at Kill Kare remain and sustain you in the months ahead. With our warmest regards, Cathy and Dan
Uniquely situated, Kill Kare sits on the woodland shores of Walker Pond - a freshwater lake - which is located on the Down East coast of Maine on the scenic Blue Hill Peninsula. Walker Pond is about three miles long and about 1/2 mile at its widest point. The lake water is very temperate and is ideal for swimming, boating and fishing. It is separated from the salt waters of the Eggemoggin Reach - part of the Penobscot Bay - by only 1/4 mile of land. We are blessed to have loons, eagles and ducks on the Pond. And since the cottage faces west, we are treated to memorable nightly sunsets and stars and constellations so bright you can almost touch them.
To leave Kill Kare, simply take our mile-long private drive and from there, you are only minutes away from breath-taking maritime views and quaint fishing villages with inviting shops, galleries and first-class restaurants. Farmers' markets in our area are worthy destinations. And, the seafood - caught daily from nearby cold, coastal waters - just can't get any fresher!
Our online Renter's Guide - the 'Guide' link on our website page - offers extensive suggestions on things to do and see, where to eat and shop and what to hike and climb in our area. Sorted by towns, there is plenty of information there to keep you as busy as you care to be. And, it is constantly updated. There will be a hard copy of this in the cottage for guests' use.
Other Activities: kayaking, canoeing, golf and tennis, sailing, Kneisel Hall of Music, Wooden Boat School, Haystack School, arts and crafts galleries, steel drum concerts - check out the Renter's Guide!
