From National Geographic -' Vermont scored highly—best in the U.S.—in our survey of destination stewardship,” says Jonathan Tourtellot, director of the Center for Sustainable Destinations, “because Vermonters care a lot about character of place.'
Here in the Northeast Kingdom, we're excited to promote geotourism - you can view historic structures and traditional New England architecture, birdwalk through wetlands, visit old cemeteries, sample cuisine from local artisans, visit sustainable farms and dairies and sugarhouses. Let us help assist you in this discovery!
We're native Vermonters, a nurse and photographer, and love to restore houses, garden, bicycle, snowshoe and travel. We enjoy sharing our hospitality and helping others learn about this special part of Vermont.
The Owner purchased this house in 2000
We have never been this happy with a house we have rented before.(Not only is it a beautiful house, but it is so well stocked and we especially appreciate how clean it is.)
Thank you for helping make this a very special visit for us.
My husband and I stayed a week recently and wished we could have stayed longer! Millrace House, nestled along the Black River, is just adorable and the owners very accommodating. I am pretty sure they ordered the picture-perfect weather for us too! We grilled several nights just so we could be at the house, but we did have breakfast at Martha's Diner right around the corner one morning. There are two double beds upstairs - the original stairs! - and one twin downstairs, with two full bathrooms. The kitchen had everything we needed and there's even a washer and dryer. I loved all the old look that was really new, and all the unique details. Lots of storage and the place felt very large. It was clearly our favorite rental from HOMEWAY thus far. Jean told us about a walking loop, so each morning we walked 2.5 hilly miles through a covered bridge and along some picturesque back roads. We love that there is less people and life there seems unhurried - the perfect vacation. The house is centrally located to all activities - and there is much to do in the Northeast Kingdom in the Fall - we took the Sunday International Brunch Cruise on Lake Memphremagog, only minutes away in Newport, kayaked the Clyde River, hiked Mt. Pisgah, saw 17 covered bridges, took an ATV tour in Danville, saw a recent movie for $4/person in St. Johnsbury, and a parade and craft fair in East Burke. We did much traveling by car but the scenery is so pretty and there is no traffic so it is a pleasure. On the way home we stopped at the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier for lunch - amazing! And don't forget to try a maple cremee!
We were two senior couples who rented Millrace House for a four day stay in August and we were all delighted with the place; it was a perfect retreat for our tour of the Northeast Kingdom. We arrived and were instantly charmed. It seemed a bit quirky at first, but the longer we stayed the more we appreciated the serene beauty and the true comfort of this fully updated home. Every need was anticipated and the owners were extremely welcoming and helpful. I have no problem giving the Millrace House an enthusiastic recommendation. The gardens also deserve mention; Jeanne and John have done an amazing job and I was enchanted by the gardens, the stream, the waterfall, the mill ruins and of course the expanse of blooms throughout. I will definitely stay here again when next in the area.
We stayed at this home for a little over a week during a summertime visit. The house was charming and had everything we needed for our stay. We loved all the conveniences...two full baths, a fully stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, linen, wi-fi, a grill, etc. Plus, the house, bedding, utensils, etc were all very clean. The grounds were so beautiful that I couldn't help but take pictures for my collection. To top it off, John & Jeanne are wonderful hosts. We've stayed at many places in the Northeast Kingdom, but this was by far our favorite!
We were charmed by this house as soon as we arrived. It is a beautiful house, very clean, and with none of that musty smell that is sometimes found in older houses. Being situated so close to Newport, it was the perfect place for us to rest in between our explorations of the area. At the same time, what a delight to relax in the evening in perfect silence. We found the beds and couches very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked with everything we needed to prepare our meals, an internet connection that works.
Thank you John and Jeanne for a fabulous vacation.
The property has been lovingly restored by the owners, who are most welcoming. Coventry is a hidden treasure, and the property location is idyllic beside the river. Hiking locally and further afield within The Kingdom is varied. We would have loved to stay longer, and would happily recommend it to our friends.
Millrace House is perfectly beautiful. It was our "home away from home" for a week as we photographed covered bridges and found trout streams. What a pleasure it was to come back "home" each evening to this beautifully restored and furnished house. John and Jeanne are terrific hosts, friendly and helpful. We found fresh flowers from their garden on the kitchen table when we arrived. One morning, much to our delight, a basket of freshly picked berries appeared on our doorstep. An antique table/desk in the living room holds a wealth of information and maps about the area, helping us get acquainted with the area and find our way around.
Having never been to northern Vermont before, we were thrilled at the scenery around every bend in the road, and impressed by the wonderful people we met. If we ever have the opportunity to visit this area again, we will definitely choose to stay at Millrace House.
