William Giffen, an architecturally trained designer, has resided in Montara for the past 25 years and has enjoyed this property as a design laboratory and retreat. 'It's such a spectacular place that I feel it's time to share it with friends and family of the world.'
William and Christine purchased this villa in 1985
There could not be a more perfect spot to relax and rejuvenate and enjoy. I rented this special home for a weekend with friends. It exceeded all hopes and expectations in its beauty and location. There is a serenity here that results from the way the owners have woven the space into nature and nature into the space. It is breathtaking. William and Christine were so gracious and helpful in making this one of the most memorable weekends ever. We are incredibly grateful that they are sharing this unique property. We will be back.
Our family was so fortunate to find Villa Montara for the perfect venue for our daughter's dream wedding! We were able to secure all the bride and grooms desired vendors (catering, rentals, photography) with the unending support of Christine and William throughout the process. They truly care about the experience EVERYONE has when visiting their one-of-a-kind home and property. It was beyond clean and uncluttered, both indoors and out. Spouting whales, seagulls grazing, and sea lions slumbering are a few of the special sights you'll catch. Peaceful, relaxing, and magical were the feelings we all took away from our time spent at Villa Montara. Thanks Christine (who is always a quick text away when you have a question) and William (who is the most gracious host I've ever met) for allowing us to create the wedding of our daughter and son-in-laws dreams!!
Several weeks ago, for our wedding, my (new) wife and I experienced a transcendent venue. Nestled on the northern California coast near Half Moon Bay, Villa Montara surpassed all expectations with which I arrived, and delivered experiences for which I could not have fathomed to ask.
To call it a "venue" sells it far short. Villa Montara, much like the elaborate set of a storied play, relies on curated layers of ingredients to render the full experience. The audience is invited past concrete walls through wooden gates into an enchanted sanctuary. The house anchors the property, it's minimalist, nautical design projects a confident yet unassuming protective strength. An ancient, windswept cypress provides balance opposite the house. The ground, a mix of crushed stone and grass, dips over several terraces to a bouldered wall. The ocean backdrop hangs behind, powerful and melodic, stretching uninterrupted to the horizon.
Our guests began to arrive in the early afternoon, shortly before the ceremony was slated to begin. As they walked through the gate on to the grounds of the main property, they stood in awe of the view. The multiple terraces provided natural eddies in the flow, offering small gathering spots for group wanting to socialize. Interestingly, each person or couple connected with the property in different, meaningful ways. Some relaxed in chairs beside the cliffside, drinking in both an ocean view and a crafted cocktail, while other walked and wandered, gazing at the architecture and design. For many, it was a time of reunion, a chance to visit with long-time friends separated by years of life. Still others gravitated to the magnetic cypress tree, absorbing its reflecting grandeur. The meticulous attention to detail, the vision of the design, and the raw canvas upon which to work, came together to craft an indelible experience for all in attendance.
But as much as the house and property created the foundation on which a special personal day was etched, equal or greater recognition is also due to William and Christine, the owners. It was clear to us by the end of our special time with them that weekend that this was a labor of love, a way in which to keep the property, forged in happiness, rich in energy and joy.
We had a wonderful experience celebrating our wedding anniversary at the unique and breathtaking Villa Montara. Located along one of California’s most beautiful coastlines, it was everything we hoped for. The house and grounds are a labor of love – artistic and beautiful, and we are so glad William and Christine shared this gem with us. They could not be more gracious and helpful. The ocean views from the house and grounds are spectacular. Short drives took us to several uncrowded beaches where we took in the beautiful waves and cliffs. Of all of the places we have been around the world, this was one of the most fun and memorable, and we can't wait to go back next year.
My husband and I had our wedding at the Villa Montara, and it was better than anything we could have imagined. The house and location are magnificent. Once you step behind the gates it is truly transformative. The breathtaking landscape, the eclectic artistic villa, peaceful and serene. It was the perfect venue for our intimate wedding and start to our honeymoon. The owners William and Christine are wonderful and were extremely helpful in coordinating the day of logistics for our private event. Having them close by (but never intruding!) really helped us relax and enjoy our wedding day. I feel so lucky we were able to secure this location and wish we could have stayed longer. We will never forget our time at Villa Montara!
My wife and I stayed at Villa Montara for 3 days recently and it was everything we expected and more. The home's interior has a unique artistic style that was both rustic and refined with spectacular views framed by the windows. The grounds were excellent with beautiful views from the home's cliff side perch. We enjoyed the music system in the house and the hot tub's setting at night with a clear sky and a glass of wine. We went to nearby Montara Beach and the water was cold but invigorating. Swimming here is not for the faint of heart; the surf break is strong and the beach steep, resulting in a strong undertow. But the beach is very scenic, surrounded by cliffs. Our daughter lives in the bay area and Villa Montara is close enough to make a very comfortable 35-40 min drive back and forth. Despite being near Highway 1, the feeling you have behind the walls of the grounds is one of solitude and serenity. We hope to return and I would recommend it to anyone.
