Vacation at Shangri La

  • 5 of 5

I spent the last week of Aug with my family at Shangri La. My Mom, my 2 sons & their kids - 6 of my grandchildren ages 5 to 15. There are 3 lovely cabins. My Mom & I took the main cabin, it has 2 cozy bedrooms with very comfy beds, my sons & 4 kids in the 2nd cabin which sleeps 6 & the two fifteen yr olds in the 2 bed bunk cabin, perfect. The pond is beautiful & serene with an island in the middle of it. The main cabin has a screened in porch overlooking the pond & very early mornings were a favorite time of day to have my coffee out there & wait for the birdlife that visits the pond. I watched Great Blue Herons, Osprey, Kingfisher & Teal & Black Ducks in the peace & quiet. I could hear the loons calling from nearby Debar pond.

There is a land phone line in the main cabin but no internet service & cell phone service is sketchy. This sounded frightening to the kids before we left but without the distraction of their various devices the kids were outside all day, every day. A canoe & rowboat are provided & we brought some inflatable rafts from home. Bob Valentine, the owner, kindly stocked the pond with Brook Trout before we arrived & there was never a dull moment for the kids while fishing. They caught & released most of the fish but kept 4 big ones they had gathered over the week & we roasted them on the grill before we left on Sat morning.

Along with the boating & fishing, we were swimming, hiking, playing badminton & croquet. The kids played hide n seek & ghost in the graveyard games at night & packed up lunches to take over to the island for picnics a few afternoons. They were well tired out at the end of the day. We had loosely planned a trip to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake for a rainy day but we had no rain & none of us wanted to leave Shangri La for an entire day.

There is a TV with satellite service in the 2nd cabin - the only time it was on was at night when the kids were settling down for bed. Minus the internet devices I was able to have conversations with my grandkids all week with them actually looking at me while we talked. Now I know what color their eyes are.

We had a wonderful time & I know that all of us especially the kids will remember our week warmly for the rest of our lives. If you’re looking for real quality time with your family in a tranquil, secluded Adirondack setting Shangri La is the place to go.

Thank you Bob & Phil!

A little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Just driving down the road to the house, we could feel our blood pressure drop and cares fall away. The air is so clean and the sounds of happy bird chirping away, we couldn't wait to get out of the car and breathe it all in. The main cabin is so comfortable, we didn't want to leave. Looking through the bookshelf, I found the most fascinating book on trout that I read one morning sitting on the deck with my coffee. We decided to take out the fishing poles and landed 5 fish in 45 minutes which we promptly released back. Our stay was so peaceful and everyone we met in the little towns were so nice, we can't wait to go back.

A Relaxing Getaway

  • 5 of 5

What a tranquil place (excluding, of course, the spectacular 4th of July fireworks at Lake Placid). We had nightly serenades by choruses of mink and green frogs, with an occasional percussive note accented by a bull frog. One morning we awoke to see a deer standing sentinel across the pond. Banded purple butterflies were everywhere. A luminous pale green and other-worldly luna moth graced us with its presence, an event that is becoming rarer in other places due to encroaching light pollution. And the spectacular enormity of the Milky Way, another sight that requires the quiet darkness. Although we love to hike and canoe, we were very content to remain at Shangri-la, relaxing on the spacious lawn, swimming in the refreshing pond, winding down. Next time we'll consider exploring the area more, but this time we enjoyed the rustic comfort of home.

Shangri-La is a great camp that is extremely versatile in the opportunities it affords vacationers

  • 5 of 5

The Adirondacks are a national treasure. In the late 1800`s the cognoscenti of the wealthy built great camps to escape to nature at it`s finest. They wanted access to all the opportunities outlined in the description of Shangri-La that fit the period. On a mini scale you can live and relive those same experiences. You drop-out and enjoy camp life as described or you can be as active as your body will allow, running, biking, hiking, mountain or rock climbing, water sports, trout fishing, golf etc, etc. Nearby Lake Placid hosted two Winter Olympics, hence, the village is rich in history, resturants, shops and quaintness. This camp fits the interest and needs of families and persons of awide age spectrum. I know just how special Shangri-La could be for you.

Great spot for families & kids

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible time, and couldn’t have picked a better place. We were a pretty large party – 6 adults and 7 kids -- and Shangri-la was the perfect size for us. We found lots to do on-site and in the surrounding area – hiking up local mountains, biking on roads and trails, paddling nearby lakes. The kids had a blast fishing in the pond and catching frogs, and the island was a big hit. We had some stunning night skies, great campfires, and beautiful mornings on the porch. We’ll be back.
