Kevin purchased this apartment in 1985
The late Carl Anderson and Pam courageously built their dream home by hand. Loving the west side for its miles of white sand beaches and uncrowded surf spots. Unbelievable sunsets with great waves, views of whales, boaters, and other sea life from the deck.
For surfers there's a great surf spot across the street with year round surfing and boogie boarding. No matter what time of year we get swells from both directions. We have no extra charges for the many ammenities we offer. We are twenty minutes from either Poli Hale Beach (one of the greatest) and the Waimea Canyon (sometimes descibed as th Grand Canyon of the Pacific).
Pros - Great location, owner very helpful, property is very spacious, great amenities (beach gear, wifi worked great, etc.).
Cons - noise (road and dogs).
Good value for money and loved the large living room and bedroom. Lots of traffic on road just outside of property which makes for a lot of road noise. Neighbors next door have multiple dogs right outside bedroom window that like to bark. Overall pleased with accommodation except for noise factor.
We found many problems with this rental, but the owner has said that he will attend to our concerns. We stayed only one night here after finding numerous issues and several inaccuracies on the owner's web site. The unit is large enough to accommodate a couple nicely and the ocean view is as described. The road noise was not really an issue for us, and yes, there were lots of beach supplies that Kevin left for our use.
1. The swimming pool mentioned in the on line description as well as in a rather outdated welcome letter was an above ground pool frame and dirty sagging pool liner, but there was no water in it. The advertised pool did not exist.
2. We cook seafood on the grill every night while on Kauai. The grill was actually a small Weber kettle grill with no lid handle. We did not see that it could be used.
3. There was a lovely beach view, but as soon as it got dark, the bugs arrived. Yes, we expect bugs, but with absolutely no window or sliding door screens, you had to totally shut the unit up at night. There were no cool breezes or surf sounds to be had.
4. The unit was clean, but no amount of cleaning could remove the horrible rust on the refrigerator door or the rotten wood on all the window frames and sills. It appears that new windows with screens are needed , and Kevin, the owner, said he would take our suggestions under consideration.
5. There was at one time a smoke detector in this unit, for the back of the detector was installed in the little hallway, but there was no detector.
6. The lanai consisted of an old chaise lounge with a very soiled mat, one small rusted end table, and two plastic chairs.
Kevin believes us to be middle aged whiners (Republicans at that) who don't "deserve" his island. Reading this response from him floored us. I personally could not recommend renting this unit.
We had such a lovely stay. The place is very accurately described and depicted on this site. Pam and Kevin are welcoming and helpful (but also low key and not intrusive) hosts. The views are incredible, with tall windows and a huge deck. The location is awesome- close to Waimea and right on the beach. Awesome sunset views every night!!
The unit itself is great- spacious and comfortable. We felt at home right away. When we arrived, the place was clean, with all listed amenities available, and island music playing :) the tall ceilings are great! The bathroom is very nice with a great shower (and bonus lovely view from the shower window). The bed is comfortable and the kitchen is pretty well-stocked. Temperature-wise, the ocean breeze + fans were enough for us- we didn't even use the AC (stayed in May).
I would not listen to the few bad reviews we have read skimming here. This is an older house overall (with updates and good maintenance) but the listing description/pics are accurate and the price reflects that. Things that make this better than a place in a fancy resort: spaciousness, quirky charm, huge deck, privacy, convenience of a full private kitchen, laundry, free access to tons of beach/leisure/surf equipment, assistance/friendliness/laid back attitude from hosts, and, as a bonus, surfing lessons from Pam!! She is an awesome teacher, and we had so much fun (though were very sore the next day, haha!).
We would definitely stay here again when we return to Kauai
We were so happy to find this special beachfront view home in Kakaha --only one night. Kevin's (and Pam's) "homeaway" is spacious and well-equipped. It was very beautiful to enjoy surf and starlight and have so much space. We relaxed immediately: napping on the lanai, watching surfers and resting on the comfy couch after a tiring visit to Waimea canyon. Unfortunately, there is some traffic on the road in front. But we managed to tune it out and just hear the soothing waves. Thank you Kevin and Pam for communicating closely and having us for only one night. Yes I would recommend to family and friends. Nearby historic Waimea has some interesting walks and Hanapepe is a "must" to eat at two fabulous cafe/bakeries and shop at the wonderful bookshop! Thank you Kevin and Pam.
It was very relaxing and beautiful scenery of the beach. The sunset was beautiful. Kevin and Pam were very informative about the area. We had a wonderful time and would come back anytime
Excellent location for exploring Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, and very near the town of Waimea for shopping and restaurants. Our host Kevin was very nice and accommodating. The place has great light and is spacious, but a bit funky. Carpeting could be cleaned or replaced, and the kitchen faucet was in need of repair. Deck had a great view of sunrise and sunset, but the main road is right in front, and it was very busy until late in the evening. The bedroom, in the back, was quiet. Excellent bathroom.
