About Kathryn Brown

My family and I have vacationed in Door County for over 40 years and realized how special this beautiful peninsula is both in history, culture and in climate. Its definitely a journey to a forgotten world where enjoying the outdoors takes precedence over the day to day and where food, and art, nature and recreation make this somewhat remote destination worth every minute of travel every time we come. Truly a wonderful place to spend time.

Kathryn Brown purchased this house in 1985

Why Kathryn Brown chose Sister Bay

Door County has always been our favorite family vacation spot. For years we had rented houses there, until one year the house we rented was also listed for sale. After our “vacation week,” we knew that we wanted to buy a house in this beautiful place we could call our get-away home and enjoy at our leisure whenever we need to recharge. We lost that house to another buyer, but ended up with a house just down the road, that in the end was even more perfect because of the location, the land and the layout of the house itself. Originally settled on the corner of an old Scandinavian estate as the home for its gardener, it came complete with Bay views, loads of sunshine, lots of lawn and adjoining woods for the kids to escape to never lands that don’t exit in the city. That is Villa Villekula, where we have since spent many unforgettable days and weeks with family and friends and our “family” of renters who have come to enjoy it as much as we do every season. It’s unique setting just off Beach Road on a stretch of lawn pouring down on over an acre toward the Bay has given us the privacy of our secluded villa, with the added bonus of close proximity to shops, restaurants and recreation. The perfect place to relax, it is one of the only places I know that when there—there is no place else on earth . . . truly paradise.

What makes this house unique

Villa Villakula is a single, story, three-bedroom home with a large great room anchored by a stone fireplace and nooks and crannies for sleeping and privacy. It comes furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry, picnic tables, grills and bikes. Relaxed yet sophisticated, it is steps above a cabin, but an easy going, relaxed home with gracious furnishing and a feel of a summer home. Ideally located close to water and a public boat launch, it is also close to the marina, shops, restaurants and the back roads for hiking, biking and exploring. The house is bordered by a small orchard outside the bedroom windows and another at the bottom of the property that overlooks the Bay. Rear and sides also include small woods that create a feeling of privacy while offering an invitation to explore what lies within. Off the road and nestled down toward the Bay from the highway, it is the perfect hideaway for kids, pets and grownups who need a true escape from the everyday. A child’s playhouse complete with tiny furnishings sits just outside the door. A screened porch with large family picnic table just off the kitchen provides a spot to enjoy the outdoors and watch the birds. The patio on the Bay side sits amidst the garden where birds and butterflies drift in and out. At night, the stars amaze. Stare above around the warmth of the fire pit. Forget the everyday and know that you are in a very special place.

Wonderful house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Kathryn's cottage. I was pleasantly surprised by how large the house was-the pictures really don't do it justice! The main living area was so spacious, plenty of room for our party of 6. The large yard and landscaping was beautiful, perfect for our kids to run around in. Our daughter loved the little playhouse on the property and the pink bedroom :) We enjoyed walking down to the water to watch the sunset and walking up the street to get ice cream. The house was clean and well-kept. We look forward to coming back!

Good accommodation and well maintained.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a delightful time at this lovely cottage. The location (just outside Sister Bay town) was perfect, able to watch the sunset and walk half a block to the ice cream store! The cottage has a large living room-dining room that is charmingly decorated with some antique pieces. There was also a large fireplace and a fire pit outside. There is a large table that easily seated eight. The kitchen was well supplied and the house was clean and well-maintained. We had a wide selection of places to sit, both inside and out. The garden is very large and we were happy the dog was well fenced in. Our granddaughters visited and loved the children's playhouse. They had us all over for tea!

We would certainly recommend this property. Sister Bay has several good restaurants, a good grocery store, and a nice little beach and playground. It is also very near a few golf courses. Couldn't have enjoyed our visit more.

great location, cute cottage

  • 4 of 5

The owner was super nice and the cottage was spacious for the living area. It would have slept 6 people but there was only one full bath. When we arrived the bathrooms had not been cleaned. It sounded like the cleaning crew the owners contracted with had not done a good job. There were hair and finger nail clipping on the floor. The yard was beautiful and quiet.

Owner's Response: Villa Villekulla is our home and getaway in a spectacular part of the country nestled next to the Bay and surrounded by trees and beautiful landscape. It is not, nor meant to be, the Plaza Hotel or Exclusive Resorts. It is a simple cottage, nicely furnished for enjoyment, relaxation and a departure from the day to day. A great person who lives in the area keeps the house clean and pulled together and makes me aware of any problems. But despite her help, and my own efforts, there is an occasional fly that dies on the windowsill, or a bee that flies in, sometimes a spiderweb spun (despite just having dusted them away) before a guest checks in. But regardless, it is an extraordinary spot to be in Door County for an easy going vacation. It is clean and well kept by any standard and most people love to come back year after year. They appreciate what it is intended to be and they seem to understand that it is not a five-star hotel with those amenities and a staff on call, but a lake house with the charm and challenges that come with a vacation location. As an owner, I am disappointed when anything is amiss at Villa Villekulla, or there is a distraction with some aspect of the house. It is tripplely troubling when a negative opinion is posted to the internet because impressions travel fast and they are hard to undo. I do not know about the issues raised by this visitor. I cannot imagine what has been described because I was at the house just a few days earlier and it was spotlessly cleaned and ready for their stay.

Just about perfect

  • 5 of 5

When the worst experience in two weeks is being unable to find the dryer lint filter, you know the place is pretty good. This is a roomy, well designed cottage with a great kitchen, wonderful outdoor facilities, beautiful yard and proximity to all things great in Sister Bay and Ellison Bay. Did I mention walking distance to the ice cream store? There is wonderful art work throughout the house--all very compatible with the Door County setting. The Browns are wonderful people to do business with.

Wanted to stay forever!

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 4 seniors and one Jack Russell terrier all agreed that we have found our forever home away from home. We loved everything about the home and the grounds. The decorating, open concept, updates, supplies, etc. made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Kathryn is wonderful to work with. She makes sure that she is only a phone call away if you have a question. This property has obviously been maintained by loving hands. Thank you Kathryn and VRBO.
