Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7)

Nestled in the dense forests of the Sangre de Cristo Range of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Off I-25 west of Walsenburg and east of Ft.Garland, Forbes Park is a private gated community encompassing over 13000 acres of fenced and protected land. Over 5000 acres of which is commons land, preserved for residents use and can never be built on or developed. Our cabin is located approximately 13 miles into the rear of the park on a well maintained dirt road. A short walk to the San Isabel National Forest Trail head. Far from 'all' the civilized world's distractions. We offer birding, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Miles of cross country skiing and snowmobiling from the front door on seldom plowed roads and old logging trails, which we seldom see anyone on for most of the winter months.

Off the grid, total solar, not even 'connected' to the world.

Abundant wildlife, including Elk, Deer, Bear, Porcupine, Bobcat, Turkey, and Mountain Lion, all of which have been observed 'on' the property. Interested in the bull elk you saw? Not here, but you can meet him on his turf just up the trail and into the National Forest. Hunting is permitted there and we know the folks you need to know for assistance with game ventures during the seasons. NOTE: Forbes Park Landowners Association restricts access to the national forest from the park. All Colorado hunting regulations are supported and enforced! Absolutely no hunting or discharging of any weapon is allowed within the boundries of Forbes Park! A copy of these rules/regs furnished upon request.

Constant comfort at 10,000 feet, during the winter, provided by a very efficient wood burning heater. During the summer it is so cool you will need to wear long sleeves, maybe a sweater, at night with the windows open. Light snows can surprise you at anytime, even during the summer months.

Seven years now and we still are grabbing our book to identify new birds on our porch feeders. You can literally approach and 'touch' our Hummingbirds. We have photos of the hummers perched on our fingers. We have Gray Jays that will perch on your knee and eat from your hands. Our occasional bear visitors (no Grizzlys) are much more shy than the birds. They don't normally approach anywhere near if anyone is out and about. Bear sightings are very rare but increasing in frequency. We have photos of them, which we took from the porch, early one morning, while sitting quietly sipping our tea. Cougar sightings are extremely rare, but I have, along with several guests, observed a large cougar walking through the back yard.

Winters are not for words. Words will never describe the beauty of these mountains following a heavy snow. Never worry, first light, following moderate to heavy snows, and our snow plows are already on their way up the roads. We also own a Skidsteer for plowing the driveway . Our home owners association contracts out properly maintained snow removal in excess of six inches. Occupied roads, such as ours are kept clear year round, but would it be BAD to get snowed in for a day? It does happen! Besides, most guests will already be out on our snow mobiles riding the miles of seldom plowed 'back' roads and trails which join the back of our property. We have ridden on snows well over four feet in depth from the back of the property. Kids will play tirelessly, all day on paths we plow for their sleds. You won't have any trouble getting them into bed at night, leaving you time for some Caveman television! Winter play will bring out the kid in anyone and you will not want to leave here.

Three bedrooms and a sleeping loft, can accommodate 7 (max.) persons. We live on-site to better serve our guests and assist with unexpected needs, especially during the winter months. We can 'disappear' upon request. We do stay out of your way, in our basement apartment unless invited .

Winter visitors flying in, especially during the winter months, are encouraged to purchase airline tickets that can be changed, because of the threat of heavy snow storms at any time.

Standard Check-in: 4:00 PM, check-out: 11:00 AM. We try to avoid back to back reservations, so that we can be flexible either way with check-in, check-out times. An all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive car is a necessity from November-May.

There is an abundance of historical and tourist attractions within a couple of hours of the cabin. Ft.Garland's Pioneer Village, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Zapata Falls, San Luis' Stations of the Cross, San Luis itself, plenty of local museums and other places of interest.

I was born in southern Colorado leaving when I was 10 and spending most of the next 45 years in Northwest Florida .

The cabin is a custom built log home. There is a cozy but very efficient wood burning stove for heat.. I have spent many sub-zero temperature nights in the cabin and stayed very comfortable. . I don't feel inconvenienced when occasionally' stranded for a day, until the snow plow clears our road. I am a First Responder so help if needed is close. I am totally off the grid with solar power so conserving electricity is important as is conserving water.

Why Terri Sanders chose Colorado

The property is very secure yet well isolated from other homes. We wanted a place remote and private yet with road maintenance and snow removal. We wanted the best of both the civilized and the uncivilized worlds. We are so remote most of the wildlife is near tame and we can hand feed the birds including the hummingbirds. We keep our snowmobiles on site as we access the back roads and trails from our front door. We also own, and keep on site a skid steer snow blower large enough to clear trails for our guest to cross country ski, hike or snowmobile. NOTE: Winter months often come with challenging road conditions at our altitude therefore I do not rent the cabin after late November. Summers we hike and mountain bike primarily on the trails of San Isabel National Forest, a 20 minute walk from the front door.

What makes this cabin unique

We spend a great deal of time watching 'caveman' television, 'the fire', during the chilly spring and fall months.. We also are guilty of feeding the wildlife (birds) and watching them, especially the hummingbirds. We have photos of them perched on our fingers. We do a great deal of walking on and around the property. We occasionally join with other locals for an extended day hike. A wide variety of movies for those who like to watch movies in the eveningg as well as a varied selection of books!

If you want secluded, this is it!

This is a secluded, off-grid property; yet, it has all the comforts of home! Don't plan on going out to eat... the closest restaurant where we ate was in Alamosa which was about a 45-minute drive. We stocked up on our groceries before we arrived, and we cooked our meals in the fully-stocked kitchen. The owner joined us for our first night's dinner, and it was a lot of fun chatting with her. She was always easy to communicate with if we had any questions.

There is plenty of wildlife around... we enjoyed driving around looking for deer and elk... we even saw a coyote and some turkeys!

We loved the location, but we were looking for some quiet time, and that is what we got!

Great off the grid get away!

We enjoyed our stay very much! The cabin was very comfortable with 3 perfect decks to chose from to enjoy your morning coffee with fresh mountain air, and an air show put on by the hummingbirds. Saw plenty of wildlife and beautiful scenery.

Quiet, remote & peaceful

My wife and I were looking to get away for peace and quiet. You can find that with Terri's place in Forbes Park. In 3 days we saw 3 cars and two of those came by at the same time. The weather in August is great. For the time we were there it was sunny in the morning and rained all but one afternoon. Nice to hear the thunder as it rolled over the mountains. Bonnett Park is a short walk from the cabin and a beautiful place to see.

The home was very comfortable. Lots of books, magazines and movies to choose from. Pick a porch and a book and the afternoon will be gone too soon.

Terri stresses being conservative with water/electricity for a reason. One day when we had very little sunshine the lights went out. However, Terri got the generator going in short order.

Be aware of the altitude. Terri said the place is at 10,00 feet. Enjoy but don't rush if your coming from the "flat-lands" like us. Just going up the stairs will take your breath. Also means a pretty cool environment. But that is what we wanted - to escape the heat.

Takes time to get back to the house from the Forbes park gate. Plan accordingly. Its every bit of 13 miles. But you leave the world behind.

Fabulous log cabin retreat!

This place is delightful with all the amenities you need. Beautiful and peaceful. I highly recommend this place to my family and friends. I hope to be back some day. Note that this is place is very remote so bring in what you need to eat/drink and plan your meals accordingly. Loved the wood burning hot tub and the million of stars at night.

Great for Nature Lovers

The location alone is worth 5 stars. The dirt roads in early September were in good condition even after a light rain. The turn-off from Highway 160 is well marked onto Road 25 (not 6). We saw about a dozen deer and lots of wild turkeys and prairie dogs along the roads in Forbes Park during our 2-day stay. We saw a couple of deer from the upstairs balcony of the cabin. There were also chipmunks, rabbits, lots of hummingbirds, Steller’s Jays and numerous other birds visible from the cabin. Power is provided by solar array and wind turbine, with a backup generator. We had no problems with electricity or water supply. Cabin has a refrigerator, microwave and gas stove as well as a wood burning stove. Pots, pans and a coffee pot are provided. The entryway stairs are steep and were a bit of a challenge for our aging knees. Terri was very helpful in explaining everything and giving us hiking directions. Overall it was an extremely enjoyable stay in a comfortable, roomy cabin. We’re already looking forward to our next stay.

Go to Forbes Gate and enter gate code you are given by me before check in.. This is Forbes Road. Go about 10 miles to Forbes LOOP Road and turn right. Go about 2 miles to Purnell Lane and turn right. Go .5 mile to my driveway on the right marked by an American flag and Colorado flag. Go in the red door and up the stairs. Stair light switch is on your left.The house is not locked.
