Can’t say enough about what a fantastic family vacation spot I stumbled upon so close to Chicago and yet, so far away. I felt like I was miles, light years really, from the hustle and bustle of the city. These 2 beautiful homes nestled up to the beach and shores of Lake Michigan was exactly what the family ordered! Both houses were so comfortable, functional and tastefully decorated that it was easy to feel right at home quickly! There was lots of room to move about freely and lots of places to lounge, sun bath, dine, laugh, read and have conversations! Most of us didn’t even leave the property! It was too easy just to hang by the pool on all the lovely lounge chairs relaxing! However, the sandy beach just a stairwell away was quite nice too! Hearing the waves and seeing the spectacular sunset over the lake was breathtaking each night.
Preparing meals and dinning was a breeze with the bbq grill, galley kitchen and ample seating indoor and along the pool and gazebo area. We never felt crowded, ever! Both houses offered abundant linens, towels, dishes etc. We wanted for nothing!
Several age groups were among this clan and everyone had a great great time! A few folks did venture out for provisions at the local grocery store 10 minutes away and a couple of us found some treasures when we went antiquing up the lake along Highway 12! We couldn’t have dreamed of a better spot to spend time together!! Can’t wait to book again next year!!
We stayed at this property summer of 2015. It was ok, I think you can do better for the $$. The main house is really special (although a little outdated). The pool is old and in general the place is in need of repair (cracks in cement, etc.). HOWEVER, the "guest" house was dirty, there is no getting around it. The shower pressure was terrible (everyone ended up showering in the main house), there was MOLD in the coffee maker, and the furniture was dated and uncomfortable, the towels were think, it just was not good. In addition, the stairs to the beach were UNSTABLE. I had to carry by 2 year old and felt really unsafe. In summary, definitely not worth paying prime $$ for this property, you can do better.
We rented this property for a family reunion and the celebration of our parents' 60th wedding anniversary. Both houses were immaculately clean and ready for us when we arrived. There were plenty of linens including beach/ pool towels and both kitchens were thoroughly equipped.
Participants ranged in age from 7 to 83 and the pool deck and guest house deck served as great outdoor gathering places for meals, conversation and games.
The view of Lake Michigan from the property is spectacular and the private association beach was clean and not overly crowded even on the 4th of July weekend. (Although the state park beach is only 200 yards to the east and it did get busy and noisy on the holiday) The stairs to the beach were too hard to navigate for the elderly members of the family but a short 2 minute drive from the cottage and we could drop of grandparents and beach gear right on the beach!
The property sits right in the middle of the national seashore so we took advantage of several excellent hiking and biking trails.
The 2 houses easily sleep 20 but be forewarned that only 2 of the 5 bedrooms are private. The other 3 have multiple beds (this was not a surprise as it is in the property information). For our group of mostly adults it was a little like going to summer camp with the in laws; so keep that in mind if you really plan to house 20 people.
Overall a great property and we hope to rent it again soon!
If you thought the listing photos were too good to be true....let us tell you that it was all that and more! The main home was as if someone said "Welcome to my Paradise!" Well maintained & expertly decorated with amenities for a crowd and scenic views like you've never seen in Indiana. Beautiful sunsets...more times than not when you looked out over Lake Michigan you could imagine yourself in the Caribbean with all the beautiful blue & green hues of the water. At night we could see Chicago lit up in the distance. Photo ops were endless. The guest house was very comfortable and a great place for the younger crowd that wanted to party a little later & sleep in. Seating for 20 or more inside & out. The pool was fabulous after an afternoon on the beach. No negatives about this property. Sleeping 16-18 may be more comfy than 20. Only suggestion...an outdoor rinse off station/hose at top of steps from beach to keep from tracking sand in pool and on patio area. Sweet memories were made and we hope to come back. By the way...did I mention that we loved it!
We have rented homes on Lake Michigan for the last 5 years and had a wonderful week! This home and the owners will leave your family with lasting memories. The owners were responsive, helpful and easy to work with. Our group is a bit of a challenge as we range in age from 4 to 87. The home was set up in a manner to suit us all. Thank you for the memorable week! We entertained the teenagers with walks on the beach, trips to the dunes and a quick train to Chicago for a day. My 87 year old mother-in-law was very comfortable in the main house and even ventured down to the guest house a time or two to check in on the kids. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Our group of 16 really enjoyed this property and location. Things we loved - the view, the pool, lounge chairs, room for everyone to eat together indoors or out, large living room for gathering our whole group, cleanliness - especially al those windows, lots of neat things to explore in the area and access to a nice beach with gorgeous sunsets and volleyball! Things that should be addressed to make it worth the fee charged - main grill did not work and was very, very dirty - even after the owner worked on it the second day, only drain in main kitchen sink is a non-working garbage disposal - had to reach down near blades to clear out bits of food several times during the week so it would drain properly, light in pool is coming out of socket exposing wires and light switch could easily be turned on when someone is in the pool putting them in danger of a shock, several windows in guest house have no or non-working screens so there's not good cross ventilation. Pictures do not show that the guest house is two steep flights of stairs below the main house. The houses slept 16 okay with some people in the guest house living room, but to sleep 20 you would have to put 6 people in the guesthouse bedroom with the trundle bunk fully open which leaves very little floor space and only a small closet (no dressers) for the luggage of 6 people - and 12 people in the guest house with one bathroom. If you want to kayak, canoe, etc., you need to bring those items with you. Overall, we had a great week.
Located just 2 miles off I-94 at the Indiana Dunes exit, we are easy to reach by car in less than a one hour drive from Chicago. For those needing to dash back to Chicago or get to the airport during your vacation, the Chicago South Shore commuter train line is only 5 minutes away and runs West to downtown Chicago and East to the South Bend airport. Our area has many great resources for a family vacation. Supermarkets, K-Mart, and a number of family dining options are just 3 miles away in Chesterton. And for cooks, Chesterton's European Market provides an opportunity to find local produce, fresh baked goods, artisanal cheeses, and charcutare every Saturday. Local produce, gifts and antiques are also available at the charming Schoolhouse Shop.
The great variety of gourmet and family dining options are detailed below.
