Why James Omand chose Jolly Harbour

We bought our villa is 2006 to have a vacation place close to our family.

Over the years, we've seen Antigua grow and change but the friendliness and warmth of the people remains. The more we visit, the more we love it - even after all these years there are still places to explore and new restaurants to visit!

We hope you enjoy Antigua as much as we do.

What makes this villa unique

Our villa offers opportunities to see the sun rise, peaceful views of Sleeping Mountain, and a refreshing through breeze.

We continue to update and modernize our villa to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have never experienced a more favourable climate than Antigua and were sad to leave both Antigua and the villa behind. The precise info provided by the HomeAway website gave only a glimpse into the delight that awaited us. Situated on the North Finger, the villa is a quiet retreat away from downtown Jolly Harbour, yet it is close enough when you want stores, restaurants, etc. We loved the villa, the north and south beaches, and the community. The folks at HBK were friendly and helpful.

James' and Teresa's info packet is a useful tool for planning. We travelled to the many of the different treasures on the island visiting English Harbour area (Nelson’s Dockyard and Shirley Heights) as well as Half Moon Bay, Hell’s Gate, the Donkey Sanctuary and Devils’ Bridge to mention a few. Although we rented a car, taxis and buses are available. We have to mention the Eco Tour with Antiguan Adventures. Picked up from the docks of Jolly Harbour by a very personable crew on a power catamaran, we had an exceptionally pleasant daytrip which focused on the island's ecology and history.

A short trip takes you to Ffryes Beach and Dennis’ restaurant where we shared dishes (try curried goat); we visited again our last evening to watch the sunset. We dined on local dishes at several restaurants including Castaways (South Beach). At Sunset House on Darkwood Beach, Carla served jerk chicken, goat stew and grilled fish that were superb! For North American/European foods, several restaurants are available. We didn’t just eat out; the villa’s kitchen is well-appointed so we dined at “home” usually starting with a glass of wine watching the sunset at North Beach, followed by the meal and a relaxing evening listening to the tree frogs while star gazing.

No trip to Antigua is complete without experiencing local food purchased from the street vendors including jerk, pepper pot, bull’s foot soup and black pineapples. Visit the St. John`s market area; travelling there by local bus is a great way to meet Antiguans. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We shopped the large grocery stores as well as the small village stores. Lots of interesting shops are found around the St. Marys and High Street area; by the harbour you find the tourist area of the Quays.

James and Teresa, thanks for everything; most of all for sharing this piece of paradise. We hope to return to the island and your villa!

A perfect holiday home for exploring Antigua!

  • 5 of 5

Villa 422D Mountain View has been a perfect base to stay while exploring Antigua. We have felt perfectly safe staying on the North finger of Jolly Harbour where we could walk to a beach and swim so easily. We will never forget our first morning going for a swim with a rainbow in the sky and fish flying across the sea.

The villa has everything you need for a very comfortable stay and is so clean and well presented. We hired a car and from Jolly Harbour could easily explore the whole island. A four wheeled drive is recommended as the road surfaces can be a challenge! Pineapple Rentals in Jolly Harbour were efficient, helpful and friendly. Having a supermarket at the entrance to Jolly Harbour was very convenient after a day out exploring. Even Waitrose products are stocked!

Our favourite places to visit have been: Long Bay, Galleon Bay and Half Moon Bay for swimming and snorkelling, swimming with stingrays at Stingray City, kayaking in the mangroves and snorkelling off Bird Island with Antigua Nature Tours and visiting Nelson’s Dockyard, Interpretation Centre and Shirley Heights. Exploring St Johns is a must especially on market days. Driving up and along Fig Tree Drive gives you some wonderful views of the beaches, rainforest and village life. Being southwest of the island meant we experienced some beautiful sunsets from the beaches. We also found some lovely places to eat and would recommend Dennis’ at Ffryes beach, Jackie O’s, Beach Bum Cafe at Half Moon Bay and Hemingway’s in St Johns.

A big thank you to James and Teresa for letting us stay in their holiday home. This has been a terrific experience for us and we have many wonderful memories which will stay with us for a long time.

Peaceful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We were really happy with 422D, the location was perfect. It was lovely to watch the sun come up on the patio. My husband fishing and me doing Yoga, perfect. The north finger was really peaceful, just a short walk to the north beach. The only downside was it was a bit too far to walk to the commercial centre in the heat, so would recommend a golf cart or hire car.

We thought the villa was really well equipped, with good quality and comfortable furnishings, especially the outside furniture. The kitchen was also well equipped, they seem to have thought of almost everything we might need. The cooler bag was really useful. We used the fold up sun loungers for the beach, they were really handy as we don't always want to lie on the sand.

We did find the microwave difficult to operate as we couldn't find any instructions, but we understand the owners are planning to replace it soon. They are also gong to install a dishwasher, which will be very useful, the last thing you want to do on vacation is the washing up.

For our second week we stayed in another villa on the South Finger, it was in a better position for walking to the commercial centre, but it was not as well equipped and the furnishings were not as good. Would definitely recommend this villa for a really peaceful and comfortable stay.

Lovely and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Sunrise Villa for a week in March 2017.

This villa was clean and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay in Antigua. Bathrooms were very nicely renovated and absolutely spotless.

We were enjoying waterfront patio panoramic views over Sleeping Indian Mountain.

It was very nice to have the secluded North beach only a two minute walk away.

Golf cart rental is a great way to get around.

James was extremely pleasant and answered all of our questions and concerns.

It was very lovely and relaxing vacation!

We are looking forward to be back to Villa next year!

Wonderfu stay

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in the villa from July 30-August 14. We have stayed at numerous villas, but this was one on the best. The place is well kept, clean, and the appliances are practically new. We had no complaints, and would stay there again on our next trip, which we hope to be sometime next year. The owners are very easy to work with and are prompt in returning phone calls or emails. Thanks to Teresa and James for allowing us to rent their villa.

Serene and Calming

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in Sunrise Villa for three months (January - April) in 2014, 2015, and 2016. James and Teresa were very quick to respond to our questions and concerns, and they also paid close attention to our comments and suggestions, making upgrades and improvements that we thought would make the space more comfortable. Over the past three years, the villa has had a screen door installed on the main entrance and the baths have all been updated.

The main floor is open concept. The kitchen has full sized electric range, and a full refrigerator/freezer. The kitchen is stocked with pots, pans, dishes, cutlery and some storage containers. The dining area includes the breakfast bar with two stools and a table and four chairs. The living space is comfortable, with a couch, loveseat, and chair with ottoman, coffee table and end tables, and lamps. The TV is equipped with a good selection of cable channels. The outside patio is large and comfortable. Since it faces east, it is shaded throughout the afternoon, and the villa is protected from the heat of the afternoon sun. There is also a powder room/laundry space on the ground floor.

Upstairs, the villa has two good-sized bedrooms, each with an ensuite bath. The bedrooms also feature generous closets, chests of drawers, and bedside tables and lamps. The master bedroom has a safe in the closet, and a lovely patio looking east across the finger to another row of villas.

The positioning of the villa, with the patio doors on both levels facing east, means that a wonderful breeze flows through the space nearly all the time. We never used the air conditioning, and only occasionally had to turn on the ceiling fan at night.

Jolly Harbour is a comfortable marina complex; gated and self-sufficient. The commercial area includes a pharmacy, hair salon, well-stocked supermarket, banks, and businesses connected to yachting and water sports. This villa has a golf cart which can be rented through the owners. It is a necessity if you are going to purchase larger quantities of groceries since the commercial centre is too far away to walk carrying heavy shopping bags. There is a bus stop just outside the complex gates, and the capital, St. John's, is just a 20-minute bus ride away.

We decided to try a longer stay on a different island for 2017. That is the only reason we have not booked a stay for next year with Teresa and James. I would recommend this rental to anyone considering escaping winter!

Great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time visiting Antigua and this villa proved to be an excellent base from which to explore the island. It is located on the North finger in Jolly Harbour which is quieter than the busy south end. In the evenings, the only noise we heard came from the tree frogs. The rental unit was spotless, well-maintained, and provided ample space for our family of four. It was very nice to have the secluded North beach only a two minute walk away. The kids enjoyed shelling on this beach. When we visited in December we enjoyed beautiful beaches and interesting historical sites. At the time of our visit there were no mosquitoes and no seaweed on any beach.

Trade winds offered a cool breeze so that the air conditioning was hardly required. Golf cart rental is a great way to get around.

The owners, James and Theresa, were very helpful with arranging the rental. We would recommend a stay at the Sunrise Villa and look forward to returning one day.
