Our quiet, newly built summer cottage on the western slopes of Freeman Ridge in Southwest Harbor, Maine at the end of a private road, is the perfect place to enjoy your vacation in Acadia National Park on lovely Mount Desert Island. The cottage has complete privacy, located in a peaceful, forested surroundings. Built on a ledge, the cottage has a tree top view of the woods and there are keyhole glimpses through the tall spruce of Bernard Mountain to the north and Swans Island to the southwest. The tall forest surrounding the cottage give an expansive treehouse feel to a modest cabin with a small footprint. Like most summer cottages in Maine, Granite Ledge is a single construction building and designed for seasonal use. Built to the owner's specifications, the cabin's framing and roof are made from lumber harvested and milled from the property. All appliances are brand new, floors are finished hardwood, giving a luxurious feel to a rustic experience.
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Granite Ledge. It was a perfect place to come back to after a busy day hiking and biking. 5 stars!! The owner was very prompt at sending our deposit as well. Thank you! Debbie
My family spent another lovely week at Laura's cabin in Maine. It's peaceful, quiet and serene. We are looking forward to our visit again next summer. The house is well stocked and comfortable and Laura is a pleasure to work with.
Our family really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was clean with all we needed. We enjoyed the porches, and opening the doors to hear the wildlife outside. No neighbors in sight! Perfect place after a day of hiking.
What delight I felt pulling up to this remote cabin set back in the woods! We got out of the car and went inside only to find that the place was just what I wanted. It is clean and bright and has just the right amount of space (there were 4 of us, though it could have handled more). There are windows everywhere looking out into the forest and letting in the beautiful Maine air. It had all the amenities we needed to cook. There is a spacious deck and porch to sit outside. The location feels remote and quiet, yet it is a short drive to town in Southwest Harbor. I wouldn't have wanted anything more and will be going back.
My family spent 2 weeks at Granite Ledge. It was perfect and Laura was a dream to work with. We are looking forward to our stay again next summer.
We had a wonderful time at this cabin and the very business-like owners were wonderful to work with. They returned our deposit very quickly after we left and were responsive to emails and texts. The cabin is quite and isolated, but not far, by car, from Acadia National Park or the town of Southwest Harbor. It looks like there maybe more cabins being built along the road to the cabin, but for now there are very few neighbors. There is a great view from the large deck and the woods were cleared near the deck to improve the view. We were there during a new moon and the stars were spectacular. Just know if you area star fanatic that the deck faces more north, so that is the part of the sky you will see. We saw song birds, a turkey and a deer from the deck. There was no TV, but there was internet connection, which was perfect for us. We could check the weather or look-up local restaurant menus, and the kids weren’t glued to a TV. The kitchen and grill met our needs and there was even a lobster pot and picks. Though this cabin meet our needs there are a few things I wish I had known before we rented it. First, there is a short, easy path to the cabin from where you park. If we had known we would have brought our collapsible wagon to help load and unload the car as well as bring in groceries. There are also 7 steps up to the cabin. The steps are not steep and there is a handrail, but if you have issues with stairs, you should know they are there. The cabin is a little more rustic than the photos lead me to believe. I didn’t know what a “3 season” cabin was and I found it rustic. In a 3-season cabin the wood you see on the outside is the same wood that are the inside walls. The walls are just boards. Because of this, where there are knots in the wood you can see directly outside. And yes there are some “holes” in the walls to outside. Not big and not a lot, but a few. This allows some bugs to come in. Apparently this is normal for a 3-season cabin, but I was not expecting it. We had ants when we first arrived, but the owner came the next morning and sprayed. I was very careful about not leaving food out, so the ants did not return. However, there were some bugs. My son didn’t have an issue, but my bug-a-phobe daughter was not happy. The bugs didn’t not take-away from how wonderful our experience was, but I wish I had known before we rented. This was a wonderful cabin for our vacation.
The privacy and seclusion of Granite Road is ideal for couples, including honeymooners who want complete privacy or for families wanting a peaceful, forested surroundings, yet we are conveniently close to locations within Acadia National Park and the ocean. We are about five minutes by car from the center of the village of Southwest Harbor where you will find grocery, hardware and drugstores, an excellent small town library, attractive shops and a number of good restaurants catering to a variety of tastes and styles. Or take the “back way” through the woods on foot (or bicycle) which will take about 15 minutes. Bar Harbor is about 25 minutes away by car or 45 minutes on the free, publicly supported Island Explorer Bus Service which leaves from a number of locations in and around the village and covers most of the Island including many of your destinations within Acadia National Park.
Please note: Granite Road is a new private road that is not listed on Google Maps or Mapquest.
