NOT So Wonderful, Unfortunately

  • 2 of 5

I'm sorry to report we did NOT have a wonderful stay at the Farm House. I do not typically leave anything but positive reviews, but, as a service to others, I am writing one for this house.

Let me begin by saying, the best part of the house was it's proximity to the lake and kitchen. We certainly appreciated the convenience, but, be forewarned, the stairs down to the beach number nearly 100. So, this house may not be suitable for someone who is not physically fit and willing to hike up and down the stairs to enjoy the beach.

As far as negatives, we arrived at the house an hour after check in time to find the cleaning person still at work. When she left we were surprised to find that the floors were still covered in sand and dirt. Don't get me wrong, a little bit is fine, but this was excessive. A sweeping is the least you'd expect before receiving the house. Later that week we would also find an inordinate amount of dead insects throughout the house.

As an older home, the living room furniture is expectedly well worn, but unfortunately, it didn't get cleaned either. The couch, in particular, was full of sand, dirt, dead insects, and hair. I definitely didn't want to have my infant or toddler any where near the couch.

Needless to say, we ended up spending a good chunk of our time cleaning up, shaking out rugs, and covering furniture with clean sheets. Obviously, this was time that we would rather have spent with our extended family, but it was work that needed to be done to try and enjoy the rest of our week in the house.

The place has 2 window AC/dehumidifiers upstairs, but, unfortunately the dehumidifier function is poor. They fill up with water quickly and turn off after about 2 hours of use, requiring frequent, awkward emptying. Plan to sleep through humid summer nights in the upstairs bedrooms or expect to get up frequently to empty the dehumidifiers.

We did notify the owner about the condition we received the place in. He was apologetic, but strongly felt we ought to NOT be compensated in the least bit (perhaps part of a cleaning fee?) for receiving a dirty rental home and for the trouble we took to clean it ourselves. Sadly, he was also rude and extremely offended at the very idea of compensating someone in our situation..

There are many other, nicer vacation homes to choose from along the SW Michigan coastline. Unfortunately, I can not recommend this home and would suggest people look elsewhere too. Good Luck!

Owner's Response: We are so sorry your stay was not what you expected! We make every effort to ensure a fun, comfortable vacation for all, but there is always room for improvement & we take all of your suggestions & comments to heart. Below are some clarifications/answers regarding your feedback. We hope this restores your faith in us & encourages you to give us another try! CLEANLINESS: We regret that your rental week began after the hours-late departure of renters who left the house in an unusually untidy condition. With a cleaning crew scheduled for a specific timeframe in which to work & unable to begin until the renters had left, they were in the unfortunate position of having to do twice as much work in half of the time. HOW WE WILL ADDRESS THIS: We currently have a check-out list on the premises for all renters, but as it is not being adhered to consistently, we will change this to a written agreement signed by each renter prior to arrival, detailing expectations for timing of departure & the condition in which they leave the house. AC/DEHUMIDIFIERS: Michigan has long been a favorite tourist attraction due to its cooler summers. Occasionally there is a heat wave or excessive humidity, & with a 150-year-old historic home, our goal is to make it as comfortable as possible within the confines of its original structure to preserve its integrity & charm. We recently added AC units & dehumidifiers for those rare weeks that are hotter than normal. We apologize that the weather did not cooperate on your week—high heat & humidity are definitely the exception, not the rule! HOW WE WILL ADDRESS THIS: We will continue to research/invest in safe, eco-friendly units to keep the house as cool & dry as possible. BEACH ACCESS: There are 25 steps down to the beach (though it can feel like 100 after going up & down multiple times per day!), with a dozen or so steps between the main staircase & the landings. You are correct, this would not be suitable for any beachgoer who has physical trouble going up or down stairs. Lastly, we apologize unequivocally for any communications that came across as rude. We pride ourselves on strong relationships with our renters & enjoy many repeat renters who come back year after year as a result. HOW WE WILL ADDRESS THIS: We will make an effort to better understand any renter complaints, & do everything we can to address them in a mutually satisfactory manner. Thank you for bringing these things to our attention--we greatly appreciate your feedback!!

Gracious historic home in lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this historic home enjoying easy access to the beach and exploring the beautiful miles of trails behind the home. The house itself was clean, spacious and allowed our large group to spread out, with a large bedroom with a number of beds serving perfectly as a kids room. The house has updated bathrooms on the first floor but generally will appeal most to those looking for the character and charm of a family home that has passed down through the generations. Think tennis trophies, Dartmouth pennants and Adirondack chairs. The kitchen is fully functional and comfortable if a bit dated in style. The owner is responsive and gracious. We hope to return!

Wonderful, historic home!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this beautiful and interesting home for out-of-town guests for a funeral and could not have been happier with the home and location and owner! The Pier Cove area on Lake Michigan is very quaint and secluded and the large, adjacent nature preserve and private beach were great to explore and hang out. History, beach, nature, tennis - excellent!

Owners Response

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for your kind review. We have made a number of upgrades to the property since then. The musty odor has been eliminated with the removal of many old books and a full clean up in the basement. We have added three new portable a/c units which keep the kitchen and upstairs bedrooms cool in hot weather. There is a new 56' flat screen hd tv in the kitchen and Wi-Fi internet connection throughout the house. It is an ideal house for families with kids of all ages.

Nice Rental

  • 4 of 5

Rented house for a family reunion and we really enjoyed the house and grounds. Was directly across the street from Lake Michigan beach and had well-maintained walking trails behind the house. Owner provided croquet set for use on the grounds and tennis/basketball court was nice to have as well. There were plenty of linens, pots, pans, etc.

Owner was very nice - he promptly returned deposit and called during stay to make sure there were no issues.

Only real downside to house was that it was quite musty when we first entered until we had a chance to air it out.
