Get away from it all at this private, classic farmhouse near Saugatuck/Douglas. Just two hours from Chicago, perfect for multi-family vacations. Enjoy relaxing on the beach (access across road) or walking on the 2+ miles of nature trails in the 75-acre dedicated ravine trust directly behind the house. This historic home was originally modeled after Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Illinois, and is undergoing a full renovation of the kitchen for the 2016 summer season. The newly designed kitchen will feature all-new stainless steel appliances, new lighting, flooring, and windows, a cozy gas fireplace, and a newly installed central air system. Other amenities include remodeled bathrooms, a first-floor laundry room, Wi-Fi internet access, and cable TV. The kitchen opens up onto a spacious wooden deck overlooking the wide lawn—perfect for cocktails, sunset dinners al fresco or morning brunches. Nearby tourist attractions include Fennville wineries, Saugatuck-Douglas dining and arts, Holland's Dutch Village, and South Haven.
I'm sorry to report we did NOT have a wonderful stay at the Farm House. I do not typically leave anything but positive reviews, but, as a service to others, I am writing one for this house.
Let me begin by saying, the best part of the house was it's proximity to the lake and kitchen. We certainly appreciated the convenience, but, be forewarned, the stairs down to the beach number nearly 100. So, this house may not be suitable for someone who is not physically fit and willing to hike up and down the stairs to enjoy the beach.
As far as negatives, we arrived at the house an hour after check in time to find the cleaning person still at work. When she left we were surprised to find that the floors were still covered in sand and dirt. Don't get me wrong, a little bit is fine, but this was excessive. A sweeping is the least you'd expect before receiving the house. Later that week we would also find an inordinate amount of dead insects throughout the house.
As an older home, the living room furniture is expectedly well worn, but unfortunately, it didn't get cleaned either. The couch, in particular, was full of sand, dirt, dead insects, and hair. I definitely didn't want to have my infant or toddler any where near the couch.
Needless to say, we ended up spending a good chunk of our time cleaning up, shaking out rugs, and covering furniture with clean sheets. Obviously, this was time that we would rather have spent with our extended family, but it was work that needed to be done to try and enjoy the rest of our week in the house.
The place has 2 window AC/dehumidifiers upstairs, but, unfortunately the dehumidifier function is poor. They fill up with water quickly and turn off after about 2 hours of use, requiring frequent, awkward emptying. Plan to sleep through humid summer nights in the upstairs bedrooms or expect to get up frequently to empty the dehumidifiers.
We did notify the owner about the condition we received the place in. He was apologetic, but strongly felt we ought to NOT be compensated in the least bit (perhaps part of a cleaning fee?) for receiving a dirty rental home and for the trouble we took to clean it ourselves. Sadly, he was also rude and extremely offended at the very idea of compensating someone in our situation..
There are many other, nicer vacation homes to choose from along the SW Michigan coastline. Unfortunately, I can not recommend this home and would suggest people look elsewhere too. Good Luck!
We spent a week in this historic home enjoying easy access to the beach and exploring the beautiful miles of trails behind the home. The house itself was clean, spacious and allowed our large group to spread out, with a large bedroom with a number of beds serving perfectly as a kids room. The house has updated bathrooms on the first floor but generally will appeal most to those looking for the character and charm of a family home that has passed down through the generations. Think tennis trophies, Dartmouth pennants and Adirondack chairs. The kitchen is fully functional and comfortable if a bit dated in style. The owner is responsive and gracious. We hope to return!
We rented this beautiful and interesting home for out-of-town guests for a funeral and could not have been happier with the home and location and owner! The Pier Cove area on Lake Michigan is very quaint and secluded and the large, adjacent nature preserve and private beach were great to explore and hang out. History, beach, nature, tennis - excellent!
Thank you for your kind review. We have made a number of upgrades to the property since then. The musty odor has been eliminated with the removal of many old books and a full clean up in the basement. We have added three new portable a/c units which keep the kitchen and upstairs bedrooms cool in hot weather. There is a new 56' flat screen hd tv in the kitchen and Wi-Fi internet connection throughout the house. It is an ideal house for families with kids of all ages.
Rented house for a family reunion and we really enjoyed the house and grounds. Was directly across the street from Lake Michigan beach and had well-maintained walking trails behind the house. Owner provided croquet set for use on the grounds and tennis/basketball court was nice to have as well. There were plenty of linens, pots, pans, etc.
Owner was very nice - he promptly returned deposit and called during stay to make sure there were no issues.
Only real downside to house was that it was quite musty when we first entered until we had a chance to air it out.
