About Andy, Diane, Mary and Rusty Brashear
We are Andy and Diane Brashear. We built BEYOND THE BLUE in 2005 as a retirement home for our parents, Rusty and Mary, and as a vacation home for us. We met at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After a sojourn in England, where Andy was in graduate school and Diane worked at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, we traveled extensively around Europe before retuning to the States to be married in Cincinnati (where Diane grew up) in 2005. We lived in Chicago for three years and now live in a wonderfully remodeled 1913 house in Denver's Washington Park. We love the mountains' outdoor lifestyle, but must travel south to engage in our other love, the ocean.
Andy, Diane, Mary and Rusty Brashear purchased this House in 2005
Why Andy, Diane, Mary and Rusty Brashear chose North Topsail Beach
BEYOND THE BLUE is located on the beautiful, wide, unspoiled, uncrowded beach of North Topsail Island. The ocean water here is warm, clean and a beautiful blue-green in color. When we saw the color of the water and the broad pristine beach, we knew that this was where we had to be.
What makes this House unique
We take long walks on the pristine beach, swim and surf in the ocean, and relax in the pool and hot tub. Cooking is fun and easy with the extremely well equipped kitchen and the endless supply of delicious ingredients from the waters surrounding Topsail: fresh shrimp, scallops, oysters, flounder, clams, tuna, and on and on. When the sun sets, the theater room has 110' screen two tiers of electronically reclining seats. Some family members quite regularly fall asleep there. Because we built the house ourselves, we got to indulge our sense of fun by painting wall murals in strategic places, like the elevator and the laundry room. We hope you bring your sense of fun and whimsy, along with your wish, in flights of peace and fancy, to go beyond the blue.

A terrific multi-generational property
I originally was drawn to the property by the lovely photos and the mention of an elevator. We had rented at Nags Head a few years ago and my father-in-law was showing signs of a progressive disease that affected his balance, so all the stairs of a raised beach home were difficult. He died in the fall, but I thought since his older sister would be with us, an elevator might not be a bad idea and if nothing else, it'd be good for loading groceries. Then one party member broke a hip and another had knee surgery less than two weeks before our dates! So with two people on canes, the elevator was a god send! Everyone loved the kitchen; it was large enough for several to work together cooking or cleaning up. We ate every dinner together and everyone took a turn at the range...terrific! The dining space was awesome as well. We were able to sit 11 adults at the table and the kids at the kitchen bar counter. A mini-stereo with CDs and candle centerpiece made meals special. We had several days of chilly weather or rain, so my son and the knee replacement cousin really enjoyed the theater room.
The second floor bedrooms worked out great and there was room for an extra cousin who hadn't made a hotel reservation: surprise, trundles! The upstairs master worked well for my immediate family, with the side bedroom and its own bath perfect for my teens. Lots of deck and other outdoor space let us spread out when we needed alone time. I enjoyed the pool area (although really only warm enough to get in one day--its heat pump not gas heat ) because the dune protect you from the wind. And the hot tub was a hit!
The star is the beach and we walked it quite a bit. There's a restaurant at the pier to the north and we walked there one morning to earn our breakfast. The proximity to Sneads Ferry was a perk, as one set of relatives wanted a little more space and stayed in a hotel. It was also good for grocery and souvenir runs without treking too far. Wilmington is close enough to explore...we got to the Airlie Gardens on a breezy beach day, but it was warmer there. The azaleas, wisteria, dogwoods and tulips were in full bloom and beautiful!
The sunrises were so lovely and the full moon shining on the water was just breathtaking. Beyond The Blue is a truly lovely property that a family of 13 from age 12 to 80 really enjoyed!
Overall the house itself is lovely with adequate size offering a great view of the Atlantic/ beach
things that don't match up to the luxury home beach concept
. wooden walkway needs repaired / replaced - railing is dangerous not attached with nails and boards exposed
. small dirty outdoor outdated cooking grille
. little or no soap and toilet paper
. limited thin towels
. no beach chairs available
. lumpy mattresses
- trundle beds do not fit in the bedroom
We are very glad that you enjoyed for the most part your stay at Beyond the Blue and the beauty of the Atlantic and Topsail Island. And thank you for your feedback on our website, it is in fact quite helpful.
We're were quite surprised to hear about the lack of toiletries and the beach chairs. We do normally provide toilet paper and basic toiletry supplies for renters, and so do apologize if you found these lacking. They should have been provided by the cleaners from our rental agency at the beginning of your stay.
As for the beach chairs, our family always tries to keep a store of enough chairs for every renter in the house down in the garage area. While the wear and tear of the beach often results of some of these chairs "disappearing" after the departure of some of our guests, there should have at least been several usable chairs for your party. Were there none at all?
The volatility of the ocean environment does unfortunately also account for the board walk and the grill. From heavy use, constant wind, sand, and sometimes hurricane rains and flooding, we are constantly working to keep the boardwalk in good shape, but if there were some loose spots where nails became exposed we do of course apologize. We care very much about the safety of our guests, especially small children. The same goes for the grill, the heavy salt air forces us to replace the grill at least every year.
So, it sounds like there was some unfortunate timing on some of these items during your stay, and we apologize. Our rental agency staff is the first on the ground so to speak, and should have had some of these issues covered. And so we have reached out to them and their management, forwarding your observations, to do our best to ensure that they don't happen again.
We're so glad everything else in our home was to you and your family's liking. We feel that Beyond the Blue is a true treasure and a wonderful place for a family vacation, and we hope, the above issues aside, you choose to return to us, and we can strive to make your stay even better.
Amazing Beach House!
What an amazing place! I stayed with a group of 10 friends at Beyond the Blue, and it was perfect for a group this size. Perfect location, "off the beaten path" in North Topsail. It was like having our own private beach resort. Plenty of room, beautiful décor, and very well maintained. The movie room was a great way to take a break from the sun, and relax in reclining chairs. Lovely pool and hot tub, which was protected on a windy day. Multiple balconies with seating to accommodate all. The elevator was great for luggage and grocery loading and unloading. I would absolutely return to Beyond the Blue for future stays!
Perfect vacation home for a group of friends!
Ten close friends planned a week's stay at Beyond the Blue based upon online reviews. Although bad weather along the entire east coast delayed our arrival by two days, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Beyond the Blue. It is the perfect vacation home for a group of friends or large family. There is more than enough space for "me" time as well as group time. The gourmet kitchen contained everything we needed to prepare meals and dine together at the beautiful round dining table for ten. We loved the connected baths to all bedrooms and the extension sun porches on each level facing the ocean. We definitely recommend Beyond the Blue and do plan a return visit in the future.
This is amazing! Green 1 side, blue on the other.
I loved looking out the front of the house to the ocean, and the back of the house to the sea of green vegetation. Being surrounded by nature and not the city made everything so peaceful.
Inside the house the amenities are great! Between the media room for watching movies at night, and the kitchen for those who want to cook, this place has it all.
The hot tub was great for relaxing with our friends; drink in hand of course. Those that had enough of the ocean hopped into the pool for a quick dip.
Can't wait to go back!
Phenomenal house with exceptional ocean view!
Spacious, yet cozy house. Great for large groups for family and friends. Nicely decorated and very clean with all modern appliances in kitchen and laundry. The pool is the perfect size and is a nice option if you aren't up for the beach. Beach access available from mid level rooms for a nice stroll in the morning! Bedrooms are a perfect size with en suite bathrooms. Living area is open, but also includes a movie theatre for those rainy days. A great relaxing experience, which I would highly recommend to any friends and family!
Located north of the Colonial town of Wilmington, NC, and south of the Outer Banks, North Topsail offers every classic beach vacation activity. Swim or boogie board in the beautiful blue-green ocean. Splash in the heated pool. Take leisurely beach walks or stroll along natural dune paths. Rent a kayak to explore birds and wildlife in the creeks, or a parasail or surfboard just to see if you can. Play on the beach. Build sand castles or just sit and soak up the sun with a good book. Play golf or tennis just over the bridge or just up the beach. Go fishing in the surf or along the Intracoastal Waterway. In Surf City you can browse the shops or watch the surfers catch waves off the dock. Buy tickets on the Topsail Belle for a cocktail sunset cruise. Buy fresh fish, scallops, shrimp, crabs or clams. Sit in the hot tub and count your blessings. Watch a wonderful movie in our full-scale theater. Golf: Northshore Country Club, just across the bridge.
