Our family of 25+ has been spending one week in July at the Barker Lake Lodge for the past several years. We have had the most wonderful adventures at this rooomy, warm lodge. Every year our family has an event that all take part in, like costume in a bag, moustache and tattoo night, gangster night. The back deck has seen some really fun/funny times. Our games of bocce, softball, and golf, a family euchre tournament, songs and games around our nightly campfires, have kept us busy in the expansive lawn area, in the large dining room, and at the golf course across the street. We enjoyed swimming, sitting at the beach and renting the Lodge pontoon, and riding it around the lake and to the bar on the other side. This is truly a gem of northern Wisconsin. Dave and Brenda have kept this historical vacation site in excellent shape.
Our family of 25 people (14 adults and 11 children, ages 7 months-10 years) stayed in the main lodge for a week in August.
The lake: Plenty of space at the beach, the kids loved to dig in the sand! We brought our own sand toys and tubes. We rented a boat (from Lake Time Boats in Hayward, they delivered and picked up) and spent hours tubing. The lake is very shallow, but not crowded and very warm. We didn't catch any fish. They have a whole closet full of life jackets at the property, though I'd recommend making sure you bring jackets in your kids' sizes. Their swimming platform, paddleboats, and canoes were a big hit.
The yard: The fire pit is central to the main lodge and cabins. The gnats were active, but luckily not over the lake. No mosquitos! We utilized their nice outdoor benches to take family photos.
The house: The beds were comfortable and the bedding adequate. Over half of the rooms have an A/C unit in the window, which let everyone sleep comfortably. It was also great in providing noise control for early-rising children. :) We LOVED the layout of rooms: plenty of space between the living areas and bedrooms for naps and bedtimes.
You bring your own towels. We forgot to bring hand towels for the bathrooms, so remember those. They provide 10 rolls of toilet paper for the week. We supplemented with a Costco pack and had some left over at the end of the week.
There is no laundry. You can do laundry 8 miles away at a laundromat in Winter.
We loved the dining room with lots of tables to eat and craft at. They have two baby high chairs.
The commercial dishwasher was amazing and made doing dishes for 25 people go so quickly! The griddle on the stove doesn't work and the right oven didn't work well. We cooked and baked a lot there. Used the portable griddles and Nesco cookers, loved having 3 fridges and freezers! The water is potable, but is well water. We did not enjoy the taste and ended up buying our own bottled water for the week.
They have Dish Network on a TV. The pool table was a huge hit with all ages. The fireplace inside was excellent for warming up after tubing, as we had cooler weather!
There aren't very many places to rent that can accommodate 25 people, and this is definitely worth a visit! We enjoyed the golf course right next door and a trip to Hayward to see their cute downtown shopping area. This is all the space I have to review! Thanks for a fun week!
We had a wonderful stay at Barker Lake Lodge for our September wedding! We rented the entire house + some additional cabins for our 40 guests. Everyone had more than enough room to do their own activities or hang out and socialize all together. David and Brenda were great from start to finish! They were quick with communication, but very laid back and flexible (which is our style!) Don't expect a 5 star hotel - this place is rustic. There isn't a flat screen TV or surround sound, but why would you need that when you have a great beach, a huge yard, a bonfire pit and a lake at your back door? Our guests are still talking about the amazing time they had and several people have requested a reunion here soon! Thank you again for the great experience!
It is a 20 to 25 minute drive to LCO Casino or town of Hayward and 8 miles north of the Town of Winter, home to Space Shuttle Astronaut Jeff Williams.
Perfect for Family Reunions, Weddings, Groups, Special Events, Business and Church Retreats.
