Western Michigan House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Come spend a relaxing week/weekend away from the stress of city life at this large summer home that sits on over 1/2 acre of waterfront property, including sandy beach frontage. Whether you prefer spending your time sun bathing on the beach, fishing for blue gill and bass, or swimming in the 150 acre lake, your day is sure to be well spent.

Only a short 3.5 hour drive from downtown Chicago, Hastings is convenient for a weekend getaway. The house has 2 large bedrooms and 2 large family rooms, and can easily accommodate 10 adults with the pullout couches and futon.

This property is very kid-friendly as well. The lake has a sand bottom and slopes gently, providing a safe area for kids to swim and play in the sand. There is a large yard next to the beach that's perfect for soccer/wiffle ball/volleyball or just chasing fireflies. When it's time for lunch, the large side deck provides a great view of the lake so you can grill while still being able to watch the kids at the beach. The second floor deck offers wonderful sunset views of the lake as well.

In case you forgot to bring anything, the town is only a 5 minute drive to the grocery store, a movie theater, a micro brewery and many quaint shops.

Come enjoy this wonderful property!

About The Owner

We've lived our entire lives in and around Chicago and soon after having our first child, we knew it would make family vacations much simpler if we had a place to escape to on a moment's notice.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Western Michigan

We chose this property because it was within a 4 hour drive from our home north of Chicago. Leach lake was also the perfect sized lake for us because it's large enough to enjoy tubing and fishing, but small enough that we don't have to worry about it ever being too crowded. The size of the sandy beach (125ft) was also a key factor so children could have somewhere to play near the water.

What makes this house unique

Waterfront property with large front yard and private sand beach. Large side yard with horseshoe pit and deck. Downtown Hastings is a 5 minute drive and includes quaint shops, a movie theater, a microbrewery and a great coffee shop. Only a 3 minute drive to the Hastings Country Club (public) for a scenic and challenging round of golf.

Fantastic Stay!

Loved this stay. Everything was clean, organized, and easily accessible. The lake was beautiful! We also loved that we got to bring our joy (lil Pepper the puppy) and the neighbors were very friendly. Thanks for everything & go Cubs!

Cute place on the lake

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit here because we really enjoy it. The place offers a gorgeous sunset view, spacious inside, lots of nice outdoor space and the location near the charming town of Hastings makes it very convenient. We appreciated the care the owner, Jeff, took in making sure we had a great stay! We will be back!

Beware of dogs and landscapers

  • 2 of 5

My family stayed at Jeff's house in July. The weather was pretty fair that week, so we were very lucky. The sleeping space upstairs was so warm with little to no ventilation, if it would have been hot, it would have been very unpleasant.

For the most part our stay was quiet and relaxing. Our biggest disturbance were the neighbor's dogs. The dogs were allowed to run anywhere they pleased, which even included the second story deck. During our stay my daughter was fearful of the dogs, who appeared nice, but came running full speed and knocked her over more than once. My infant son was in someone's arms at all times when outside, because it was not even safe to have him lay on a blanket due to the unruly dogs next door.

The only other issue we had that week was the landscapers. They were scheduled to arrive on a Tuesday, so we planned to stay off the grass until they came. They never came. They finally arrived unannounced Friday afternoon, blocking the street and sending us scurrying to pick up toys. It was the warmest day we had and we were quarantined in the house. They were fairly quick, taking around 45 minutes, but the inconvenience was not necessary.

The cottage was nice, but I will not be returning with my family.

Owner's Response: Sorry to hear of the issues with the neighbors' dogs. They are friendly but can be startling so I understand the concern. I will continue having conversations with them about keeping their dogs on their property. I'm not sure I understand the concern with the landscapers as they are necessary to keep the property maintained. Based on weather conditions, they may not always arrive on the scheduled day of the week but they do their best. They also spend no more than an hour cutting the lawn so I'm not sure how that ruined an entire day. I am disappointed you didn't feel you were able to enjoy your entire stay, however. I hope future vacations are much more enjoyable.

Such a cute home! PLENTY of space, clean, and very cozy. The view from the upstairs deck is amazing. Love love love this place! Wish we could have spent more time here. Hope to get to stay here again when we come back to town next fall.

Use Caution!

  • 2 of 5

This was our second stay at Jeff's house. We were there in 2014 and things were okay overall. We liked the space and nearby beach. This year did not go as well. The next-door neighbor has 2 dogs that constantly run loose. The dogs seem to be friendly but tended to run full-speed toward my grandkids which scared them terribly. Also the dogs defecated all over Jeff's yard, including the side yard and the yard near the beach. We had to constantly watch to keep the kids from stepping in dog piles when playing. The neighbor came over once to clean up a couple of spots, but he did not clean up all his dogs had done--by far. He said the dogs think that is their yard. My son, an adult, also stepped in a dog pile directly outside the upstairs door when he took a bag of trash out. We travel with a dog, so we are dog people. However, we keep or dog leashed or on a chain when vacationing. The issues with the neighbor dogs were troubling.

Some other things renters should know: The house has a lot of space and lots of sleeping area. It has no air conditioning so it is uncomfortable when the weather is warm or humid. The dishwasher does not work. There is cable TV in the upstairs living area, but the TV in the lower-level living area has only an antenna. When using that antenna, the sound of the TV barely works even when turned up to full blast. This is difficult since that is a main living area on the same level as the kitchen and dining area and the kids wanted to use it. The beach area is nice for kids, but you need to watch the dog droppings. The front deck and the front two steps are VERY slippery when wet! The water in the house is super hard so we got rust stains on our laundry.

When we arrived last year the house was fairly clean. This year we arrived to find large carpet stains & dirt in the corners. Jeff has now charged me for carpet cleaning as well as for a sliding door that was off the track the day we arrived. He stated that our dog peed in the house--which is not true. And we put the door back on track several times while we were there.

This year we decided the house is not worth what Jeff charges--and that was before he charged me to clean his carpet and maintain his house! I strongly suggest you document the condition of the house when you arrive so that he cannot charge you for damage you did not do. I'm sure he will say I am bitter over the lost deposit. I am! We did not cause that damage and he will not respond to me! Be cautious!

Owner's Response: I'm sorry to hear these issues took place as this is the first time I'm hearing of them. It is also a disappointing review from a return renter who enjoyed the house/lake enough to come back. I understand the concern with the dogs next door but it does become challenging when many renters have their dogs play with those dogs. The amount of dog poop sounds excessive but I can't speak to that as I wasn't there. I will have a conversation with my neighbor to request they are more watchful of their dogs when they let them out and ensure the renters want to have the dogs on the property. In response to the other issues listed: - It is true the house has no air conditioning. Usually temperatures cool enough at night to keep the house comfortable but there are days each summer where it is excessively hot and difficult to keep the house cool even with all the fans. I have always been up front about that situation and it hasn't changed since this reviewer rented the house last year. - I have not been made aware of any issues with the dishwasher before, during or after this renter's visit so I'm not sure what the issue may have been. - I do not recommend anyone renting the house because of the TV offerings. While a nice plus during inclement weather, the best feature of the house is the beach/lake. - There is very hard water, which is why the information provided renters before arriving includes the following: "Washing Machine – ...Also, a word of warning before washing whites. Due to the well water, it is likely that whites get a rusty stain on them so wash with caution." - The original stains on the carpet are from a previous renter who had a portion of the deposit deducted as well. Due to the back-to-back rentals this summer, it wasn't possible to get the carpets professionally cleaned but they will be this Fall. As a general rule, renters should document issues/damage with any rental house and inform the owner immediately to prevent an impact to the deposit. I have been relatively lax in the past with deposits and don't deduct for normal wear and tear but when I don't feel the house was treated with respect and/or there is real damage, I will deduct from the deposit. In the end, I have to trust the information provided by the housekeeper as she sees the house between every rental. I will reach out to discuss the issues with this reviewer as this is the first time I am hearing them. I'm not sure how they tried to contact me previously.

Great stay

  • 4 of 5

Thanks to Jeff, we had a great family get-together for 3 days followed by quiet time for my husband and I for the rest of the week. Having 2 living areas was great; the kids could watch a movie upstairs while the adults chatted downstairs. There are 2 bathrooms, one has a tub & shower, the other a large tub. The 2 bedrooms are very large with 3 beds in one room and 2 beds in the other. The beach was very nice; sandy & clean. The water is deep enough at the end of the dock so everyone could jump off the end (don't dive). The lake is a bit small but there's very little boat traffic so there was room to safely ski and tube on the North end of the lake. The fire pit is huge, we are able to get everyone around it. If you have time, explore Hastings as there are a lot of cute shops downtown. Note: the raft that sometimes floats in front of the beach does not belong to this property; don't use it :)
