About Tim Ghirardelli

I am a fourth generation Californian, traveler based in the San Francisco, Bay Area. I’m fascinated by ancient advanced culture where from Sumerian tablets to Atlantian myths and Mayan ruins—Yucatan plays a central role. While visiting Merida for the first time in 2003, I was hooked and came back to discover even more...

Tim Ghirardelli purchased this house in 2005

Why Tim Ghirardelli chose Merida

Casa La Barenda is an easy day-trip from 'home', yet it's a world away! Being able to walk to everything in the centro historico and only fifteen minutes from Merida’s international airport makes it a snap to go.

I enjoy the French-Spanish colonial architecture and exploring the many fascinating Archeological and natural wonders nearby. Not least of which also includes the local food, art, music, history, people and culture--there is much here to enjoy. Currently, I'm exploring the many surrounding cenotes as more become available to view. These natural geological formations are otherworldly.

What makes this house unique

Casa La Barenda is a simple, rustic property with all the essentials and various architectural touches to reflect local character and lifestyle. Guests love the walk-to- everything location; the plunge pool and garden with the Mayan water feature overhead and the rooftop lounge area with neighborhood views. The casa feels good and travelers and friends think enough to return. Hopefully Casa La Barenda will bring a smile and pleasure to your stay too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I’m so glad there were no vacancies in the local hotels. We had everything we needed and then some! Very clean and worth every penny. We kept saying how happy we were to find it!

Cozy, comfortable retreat, very responsive and polite Property Mgmt!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Barenda! The property is tastefully decorated; contemporary yet retaining the Mexican Mayan elements that make Merida so special. Everything you need is within walking distance, and with the convenience of Uber (reserved for those rainy afternoons) we didn't miss having a car at all. The little pool was so fun for our kids and to relax after a busy day of walking. The kitchen, although in our opinion too small for meal prep & cooking for a family of 4, offers everything you need if you were to cook and eat in! With the convenience of having Mercado de Santiago and all the restaurants of Santa Lucia within a few blocks, as well as the extremely reasonable prices, we ate out/ordered in for every meal for a fraction of what it would cost in the States. The rooftop terrace was perfect to have a drink and enjoy the cool afternoon breeze. Our only concern was not realizing that the second bedroom was separate from the main structure, accessible through the pool/courtyard area. It does have a lock and key, but with younger kids we wouldn't have been comfortable leaving them there for the night. The 4 of us ended up sharing the main bedroom, and the kids slept great in their own hammock! Our electric bill wasn't outrageous (the equivalent of ~30 USD for 4 nights), but we were very stingy running the AC's only when needed. We would love to come back once our kids are older and they can have their own room! We definitely recommend this property for couples traveling together, or for families with teenage kids. Thank you Tim and your team at Merida Rentals & Property Management!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I look forward to your next visit. There's so much to enjoy just steps from the casa. From the cultural arts, music and theatrical events going on constantly throughout the city to the culinary delights that are unique to Yucatan. And of course the fascinating Mayan history and natural geological wonders. Traveler's would do well to stay a little longer to allow the charms of Merida to sink in.

Beautiful renovated house in the middle of it all

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this lovely house. It is very large, plenty of room and well decorated. The kitchen is spacious and had most anything we needed. It was great having a washer to rinse out our sweaty clothes and the separation of the bedrooms was perfect. We didn't use the roof desk at all as it was extremely hot during our stay and the stairway is a bit of a challenge. The heat was an issue (not the owners fault). I had read all the reviews and saw the ones referring to the noise and the addition of the sound windows in all the external street windows. The problem is this creates a space with no air and no air flow. Only the dining room fan had any strength so the bedrooms were very, very hot and not knowing how expensive the air conditioning would be I was afraid to use it. I finally broke down and did and am still not sure what the cost was as I haven't gotten my deposit back. At a cooler time of year and with an unlimited budget you would be hard pressed to find a better place to stay, we did really enjoy it. The disco around the corner is very loud on Friday and Saturday, it didn't bother me but my friend is sensitive to noise like that just so you are aware.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at the casa. Yes, you'd be hard-pressed to find this location and amenities at this price. I must say too, that short-stay visitors to tropical Yucatan who do not use the AC for fear it is too expensive should not comment about the heat. A quick read of the Owners Manual to get the feel of a house will get you started off right--please just do it. Honestly, normal monthly AC use might range in the 150 to 200USD--that’s about 6 bucks a day depending on the time of year. This guest 8-night stay cost $25USD in electricity. There are multi-speed ceiling fans in every room, and roof ventilation too. When ceiling fans are used with the AC, the casa works great. And don't forget to cool off in the plunge pool. It more than nice; it's a functional part of living in Yucatan. Please keep in mind this is a city of nearly a million people. Merida is a lively town and living in the centro will come with the typical city sounds. If you require quieter surrounds, Merida may not be for you. I'll add this are staying in a renovated 18th century Colonial home--it's an awesome one-of-a-kind unique experience complete with idiosyncrasies, as all homes have. It's part of the joy and privilege of travel. Remember, you could choose to stay in a hotel room for about the same price where it looks and feels like it could be anywhere in the world inside--where the climate control is set to freezing. The Club or 'disco' is a block away and has a terrific family-friendly vibe. Let go of your cultural bias and live a little...we're all going to be dead for a long time. I hope you'll choose to stir up your travels and experience living local. You might otherwise be searching for perfect for a long time, or find that you are better suited to hotels.

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed in the home for several days at the end of August 2016. Was a highly positive experience and would recommend this house to those visiting Merida.

Location is great. Three blocks from Santiago park and its church and food stalls and food market. Short walk, maybe 10 minutes or so, to the city's grand plaza and trendy Santa Lucia park area. A bit longer walk to Paseo de Montejo and its attractions, but totally doable. Plenty of restaurants nearby, plenty of on street parking within one block. Convenience store directly across the street for beer and snacks, full grocery store three blocks away in Santiago.

House is lovely. Two large bedrooms with queen beds in each. Full bathroom attached to each bedroom. Washing machine (clothes line drying though). Decent sized splash pool and lounge area on the patio. Relaxing roof deck. Hammocks. Big enough kitchen to cook if you want (we cooked breakfasts each morning) and big dining room table. Nice living room with big couch and tv. Very quiet. Can barely hear the street noise in the living areas, and not at all in the bedrooms at night. Nicely decorated, homey, classy.

Super nice and responsive owner and management. They answered questions quickly and well. House was very clean. Check in and check out simple and easy. Lots of helpful info provided in the welcome booklet.

Cons: It's hot in there. Yes, Merida is always hot no matter where you go, and especially in August, but that said, the house seemed to be maximized for quiet and avoiding street noise which sacrificed ventilation. Many of the windows are not screened, but rather enclosed by plastic so it's difficult to get cross breezes going. That makes the house very hot inside, so you will need to use the a.c., which can be expensive. We got by only using the a.c. at night to sleep, but something to keep in mind. You can escape the heat nicely in the splash pool and on the rooftop patio.

Overall, a very nice place and a great option if you want to stay in a house in the historical central district of Merida.

Owner's Response: With the unique European influence, Merida is an all-the-more interesting destination to experience the Mayan and Spanish colonial history, not to mention the architecture, food and art scene. Unseasonably high temperatures can be managed quite effectively both in the casa and surrounds. We’ll be adding this info to the Welcome Book.

Beautiful Casa

  • 5 of 5

We stayed around Casa La Barenda for one week and had a great stay! We have been to Merida four times and found for that Casa La Barenda was in a perfect location for us and offer all we needed. Very close to the main square and Santa Lucia. The owner Tim and the management made us feel very we were at home! Everything at the casa was even better than the pictures showed and we would recommend it to anyone visiting Merida. Thanks again to Tim and to Javier (Tim's property manager in Merida) for everything and we hope to see them again soon!. Keith & Lauri

Owner's Response: It's always a pleasure sharing the casa with guests who really enjoy the adventure of it all--the friendly city of Merida; the sights-- Mayan, Spanish and European history and architecture; the natural wonders, and the amazing fusions that are occurring in the food and art culture. But especially the non-tourist, international vibe that travelers love. Thanks so much! We hope to see you two in the neighborhood!

Almost didn't stay but glad we did

  • 3 of 5

The house is in good location. Street parking, which wasn't a problem for us. Easy walk to several parks, very nice restaurants and shopping. Also walking distance to several tour companies that will take you to see ruins, cenotes etc. We felt completely comfortable walking in this area any time of night or day. You'll find the Mexican people are extremely friendly in Merida.

The house itself is nice for two couples. Kitchen is small, but with eating out prices being as low as they are, we found that we only used the kitchen for breakfast. Street noise did bother us the first night, but got used to it very quickly. The noise is just something that you'll have in any houses in Merida, as most were built long before paved roads were put in and cars were around.

The only problem that we had was that no one gave us good directions to the house and we were not aware that as you enter and leave different barrios the street numbers start over. I had a general idea from my own research on the internet. After more than an hour of trying to figure out where to go, we ended up calling the owner for directions. We were told that we should have gotten an email with directions and the code for the lock box from the management company. "Just give them a call" is what we were told. Great but we don't even know who the management company is, much less have their phone number. After another hour or so, a representative from the management company met us at a local gas station and escorted us to the house and let us in. The problem was that the management company was never told that we were coming, therefore not ready for us. But they got the house ready very quickly and left us with a nice bottle of wine. The management company was great and really took very good care of us. We'll use the management company directly to book stays in the future.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay at the casa and in Merida. It's very important to touch base with the owner or management company prior to your dates. And when driving a car in Yucatan, be sure to inform your host, and ask about any special navigation tips. We'd hope too, that you'd be traveling with a good map, or have access to GPS on your hand-held device.
