About Tim Ghirardelli

I am a fourth generation Californian, traveler based in the San Francisco, Bay Area. I’m fascinated by ancient advanced cultures worldwide where from Sumerian tablets to Atlantian myths and Mayan ruins—Yucatan plays a contributing role. While visiting Merida for the first time in 2003, I was hooked and came back to discover even more...

Tim Ghirardelli purchased this house in 2005

Why Tim Ghirardelli chose Merida

It's always a pleasure to see the ever-evolving food, art, music, people and cultural scene--there is so much here to experience. You can feel the history and explore the many fascinating Archeological and natural wonders nearby. Casa La Barenda is an easy day-trip from many areas on the planet, yet it's a world away! Being able to walk to everything in the centro historico and only fifteen minutes from Merida’s international airport makes it a snap to go.

What makes this house unique

Guests love the walk-to-everything lifestyle and the relaxing feel of the home with comfortable furniture and colonial features decorated with a blend of antiques and local artwork. You'll decompress here in no time with the indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Chill around the plunge pool, warm your bones at the rooftop lounge and gently swing away in hand made hammocks. The casa feels good and travelers and friends think enough to return. Hopefully Casa La Barenda and Merida surrounds will bring a smile and pleasure to your stay too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I’m so glad there were no vacancies in the local hotels. We had everything we needed and then some! Very clean and worth every penny. We kept saying how happy we were to find it!

Owner's Response: It is a pleasure to have so many guests appreciate the efforts involved by so many people working together with heart-felt pride to deliver the best possible experience. We try to make it fun, unique, personal and memorable. Thank you! This just in...a French Bistro has opened steps from the casa where you can enjoy morning latte's, croissant's and other fine pastries. Breakfast fare also served in a nice, sun lit area.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed your brief stay at the casa. As in any tropical climate, these harmless bugs can be part of your experience. The casa is treated before all guest arrivals and any subsequent outbreaks are random, rare and easily addressed. It's very important to us that you fully enjoy your stay and immediately report any issues of concern.

A Beautiful Haven in Merida

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Casa La Berendera!

For four of us the house proved spacious, comfortable, and deeply pleasing aesthetically, with great colors, statuary, and decorative touches. We had some delightful evening hours on the roof-top terrace, and enjoyed the dipping pool as a great way to cool off from 90+ daytime temperatures. We never needed to use the AC (which will cost you some $$'s for electricity. The beds (and hammocks!) were really excellent.

From the house, a well-lit walk of 4 or 5 blocks gets you into the lively heart of charming downtown Merida, and made an easy jumping-off point for exploring other areas of the amazing northern Yucatan. When one of our party needed to stay several hours beyond check-out time until her flight out, Tim was extremely generous and accommodating, for which we are very grateful. Highly recommended!

great location, very comfortable casa

  • 5 of 5

The casa is as pretty as the pictures....great location for walking to the Plaza or the library. Management was fine, our 14 days were very enjoyable. The plunge pool helps in the hot mid-day heat....we would return. I recommend this casa. Martin

Cozy, comfortable retreat, very responsive and polite Property Mgmt!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Barenda! The property is tastefully decorated; contemporary yet retaining the Mexican Mayan elements that make Merida so special. Everything you need is within walking distance, and with the convenience of Uber (reserved for those rainy afternoons) we didn't miss having a car at all. The little pool was so fun for our kids and to relax after a busy day of walking. The kitchen, although in our opinion too small for meal prep & cooking for a family of 4, offers everything you need if you were to cook and eat in! With the convenience of having Mercado de Santiago and all the restaurants of Santa Lucia within a few blocks, as well as the extremely reasonable prices, we ate out/ordered in for every meal for a fraction of what it would cost in the States. The rooftop terrace was perfect to have a drink and enjoy the cool afternoon breeze. Our only concern was not realizing that the second bedroom was separate from the main structure, accessible through the pool/courtyard area. It does have a lock and key, but with younger kids we wouldn't have been comfortable leaving them there for the night. The 4 of us ended up sharing the main bedroom, and the kids slept great in their own hammock! Our electric bill wasn't outrageous (the equivalent of ~30 USD for 4 nights), but we were very stingy running the AC's only when needed. We would love to come back once our kids are older and they can have their own room! We definitely recommend this property for couples traveling together, or for families with teenage kids. Thank you Tim and your team at Merida Rentals & Property Management!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I look forward to your next visit. There's so much to enjoy just steps from the casa. From the cultural arts, music and theatrical events going on constantly throughout the city to the culinary delights that are unique to Yucatan. And of course the fascinating Mayan history and natural geological wonders. Traveler's would do well to stay a little longer to allow the charms of Merida to sink in.
