Searching for a quiet get-a-way? Eden Cottage at High Rock in the Bahamas is the place. It is located in the small community of High Rock on the eastern end of Grand Bahama Island, 28 miles from The Grand Bahama International Airport. Eden Cottage overlooks one of Grand Bahama’s pristine beaches which is ideal for swimming, skim boarding, sunning or just strolling for miles along the shoreline.
If you're looking for larger accommodations, ask about our newly finished cottage, Eden II (3br, 2bth, full kitchen, full living room and dining room). Photos available upon request.

Perfect Christmas getaway
Eden Cottage is a terrific location if you are looking for peace and quiet and well as immersion in the local culture. We met lots of friendly locals during our week stay and look forward to seeing them again! The beach in front of the property is beautiful and perfect for long walks. However, be careful and be on the lookout for broken glass that has washed up on shore. We had our rental car (a must) and was able to easily visit East and West end and other gorgeous beaches along the way. The house had everything we needed, but would have been small for 4 adults- which was our initial plan. We cooked several of our meals there and had no problem. We will be back.
It was delightful having you both visit with us at Eden Cottage. I am happy that you enjoyed your vacation and look forward to seeing you again in the future. Thank you for coming.
Dirty, rustic and funky, but the beach was nice
The location is as described (remote, on a beautiful beach), but the house left much to be desired, considering the price. The shower and bathroom was filthy (I’ll try to post pictures). Host gave us incorrect directions so it was hard to find at night (looking for the back side of a sign that wasn’t visible from the direction she knew we were coming from & stated house was on wrong side of street, so it took some sleuthing in the dark). It was early January which we found out was the cold season... it was very windy and the house was frigid when we arrived and no option for heat. Not enough blankets for the cool temperature & the house doesn’t seem insulated. After the first rough night, I left a voicemail for host and she did come give us a tiny space heater, but she completely ignored my husband’s request for more blankets. We are not the kind of guests to nag or ask more than once when it is obvious someone is just doing the bare minimum. We are from Alaska so we are normally OK with cool temps but we did not pack heavy clothes or parkas because we were thinking the Bahamas would be warmer. The cottage is small with steep and uneven stairs that could be a hazard to an elder or someone with poor balance. The full kitchen did make it possible to cook meals, which is preferable unless you want to eat the local fried fare at the nearby restaurant. If you come, bring groceries with you from Freeport, otherwise you’ll be shopping the convenience stores for basic canned goods, rice etc but no produce.
Overall quite disappointing. The house needs a thorough deep cleaning & a host who pays attention when a guest makes a reasonable request in a good way.
FYI this is my first negative review after years of using vrbo. If you like ‘rustic’ with bedding/towels from the 1990s this is your place.
It is most unfortunate that Sharon and her family arrived during one of the coldest weeks the island has experienced in several years. We are prepared for minimal cold but not the temperatures which was experienced during her stay.
I was in contact with Sharon before her arrival and requested her arrival information. I was advised that she would be arriving from McClains Town which is from an easterly direction travelling west to the cottage. She mentioned that she would no doubt be arriving by taxi.
The following day l visited the cottage and was told that l had given them incorrect directions. They had changed their arrival from McClains Town to arrival from G.B. airport and did not inform me of the change, which required different driving instructions.
I am sorry that Sharon was so unhappy with the accommodations.
We stayed in the larger 3-bedroom cottage. The house was perfect. It was clean, well furnished and had everything we needed for a week long stay. The beach right across the street is fantastic. This is a perfect spot for folks who want to get away from the cruise-ship crowd and enjoy a quiet, tropical vacation. We rented a car and cooked most of our meals in the cottage. We made day trips to West End, Peterson's Cay, Crabbers Bay, and Freeport. It's a short walk up the beach to Bishops Resort where you can have a drink, lunch or dinner if you don't feel like cooking.
lovely quiet cottage with all amenities.
Reminded us of our own cottage in northern Ontario. Quiet charm with everything available for a week's stay. Beach was fairly untouched. Pleasant locals including a dog who scrounged for leftovers! Sandra met us @ the airport and was helpful in recommending local grocery stores, etc. High Rock is off the beaten path, unlike Freeport, but within easy driving distance if desired. We would recommend Eden cottage to those who prefer to travel over being a tourist. Mark & Annita Y
Great 'off the beaten path' find
We had a week in the Bahamas so we decided to split our vacation in two; three days doing touristy items (dolphin swim, scuba diving, restaurants) in Port Lucaya and four days fulfilling our desire to relax away from the tourist areas and really soaking in the island at Eden Cottage. We could not have been happier with our decision as Eden Cottage was everything for which we were looking.
First off, the cottage is small but fully utilizes every inch so we were never crowded. To the contrary, by the end of the week I was wondering why we have so much excess space back home. A full kitchen made making our own meals a snap.
We couldn't believe how close the beach was. The first thing we did when we arrived was break out the snorkel gear and take a swim. Within 1 minute, I had already spotted a huge starfish. That was followed by a plethora of fish and conch. Over the next 3 days, we added to that list a small shark (the locals confirmed they are harmless), stingray and barracuda. All way enjoying a quarter-mile strip of beach all to our selves. Amazing!
The locals were the next great benefit of Eden Cottage. Some neighbors came over and introduced themselves. Also, I ran every morning and everybody waved and said hello. We made our way down to Bishops to visit with Ron the bartender, Renae the waitress and Mr. Bishop himself. We also walked the half mile to see the lighthouse built by the local pastor (whose mother is in her 80s, has lived in High Rock her whole life, and still walks to church).
The reminder of the time was spent visiting Lucaya National Park and Gold Rock Beach, reading, talking, and eating at the cottage itself.
For those who looking for something different than your same old same old resort, we definitely recommend Eden Cottage.
Thank you for the great review. It was a pleasure having you visit with us at Eden Cottage. I am happy that you enjoyed the welcoming community of High Rock and its quite charm. Thank you for coming.
We were very happy with our recent stay at the cottage.
We found the cottage exactly as described in words and photographs, no surprises. The beach was absolutely gorgeous and as mentioned a mere 30-60 second walk from the front door. Gorgeous turquoise water, as calm as glass on certain days. We had some rough/windy weather that caused some chop early on, but was able to snorkel and even find a conch close to shore; some fish patrol the area as well.
Sandra is/was a most gracious host. She met us at the airport, gave us all necessary instructions and even accompanied us over to the grocery store so we could pick up essentials. Talk about going the extra mile! We had only one issue during the week regarding some industrious wasps that quickly built a nest under one of the eaves. This was dealt with promptly while we were spending the morning on the beach.
As stated in the header, this cottage is an outstanding value. Though we've certainly stayed in better (and worse) rentals, the solitude, proximity to the beach and the kindness of the locals make this a special place indeed.
Separate to my review of the cottage itself, I wanted to pass along a little advice to prospective guests. As mentioned, the cottage is 30-40 minutes from Freeport in the west and McLeans Town in the east. A rental car is an absolute must. If we had to do it all over again we would have planned to prepare more meals in the cottage rather than have to embark on frequent trips. The 2 restaurants in walking distance are great for ambiance, but lacking in quality/diversity of offerings; more a lunch option in my opinion. Further, they keep very uneven/limited hours (sometimes not even opening on certain days) so they should not be relied on heavily.
Cook at home for the most part and you will be able to enjoy more time in this beautiful community.
Sandra.....all the best to you. It was a pleasure.
Thank you Michael for visiting with us. It was a great pleasure having you and your family stay and enjoy the cottage and beach. I especially enjoyed Megan's beautiful and contiguous smile which greeted me on arrival and never left during her stay. Thanks again for coming.
