Great 'off the beaten path' find

  • 5 of 5

We had a week in the Bahamas so we decided to split our vacation in two; three days doing touristy items (dolphin swim, scuba diving, restaurants) in Port Lucaya and four days fulfilling our desire to relax away from the tourist areas and really soaking in the island at Eden Cottage. We could not have been happier with our decision as Eden Cottage was everything for which we were looking.

First off, the cottage is small but fully utilizes every inch so we were never crowded. To the contrary, by the end of the week I was wondering why we have so much excess space back home. A full kitchen made making our own meals a snap.

We couldn't believe how close the beach was. The first thing we did when we arrived was break out the snorkel gear and take a swim. Within 1 minute, I had already spotted a huge starfish. That was followed by a plethora of fish and conch. Over the next 3 days, we added to that list a small shark (the locals confirmed they are harmless), stingray and barracuda. All way enjoying a quarter-mile strip of beach all to our selves. Amazing!

The locals were the next great benefit of Eden Cottage. Some neighbors came over and introduced themselves. Also, I ran every morning and everybody waved and said hello. We made our way down to Bishops to visit with Ron the bartender, Renae the waitress and Mr. Bishop himself. We also walked the half mile to see the lighthouse built by the local pastor (whose mother is in her 80s, has lived in High Rock her whole life, and still walks to church).

The reminder of the time was spent visiting Lucaya National Park and Gold Rock Beach, reading, talking, and eating at the cottage itself.

For those who looking for something different than your same old same old resort, we definitely recommend Eden Cottage.

Outstanding Value!

  • 4 of 5

We were very happy with our recent stay at the cottage.

We found the cottage exactly as described in words and photographs, no surprises. The beach was absolutely gorgeous and as mentioned a mere 30-60 second walk from the front door. Gorgeous turquoise water, as calm as glass on certain days. We had some rough/windy weather that caused some chop early on, but was able to snorkel and even find a conch close to shore; some fish patrol the area as well.

Sandra is/was a most gracious host. She met us at the airport, gave us all necessary instructions and even accompanied us over to the grocery store so we could pick up essentials. Talk about going the extra mile! We had only one issue during the week regarding some industrious wasps that quickly built a nest under one of the eaves. This was dealt with promptly while we were spending the morning on the beach.

As stated in the header, this cottage is an outstanding value. Though we've certainly stayed in better (and worse) rentals, the solitude, proximity to the beach and the kindness of the locals make this a special place indeed.

Separate to my review of the cottage itself, I wanted to pass along a little advice to prospective guests. As mentioned, the cottage is 30-40 minutes from Freeport in the west and McLeans Town in the east. A rental car is an absolute must. If we had to do it all over again we would have planned to prepare more meals in the cottage rather than have to embark on frequent trips. The 2 restaurants in walking distance are great for ambiance, but lacking in quality/diversity of offerings; more a lunch option in my opinion. Further, they keep very uneven/limited hours (sometimes not even opening on certain days) so they should not be relied on heavily.

Cook at home for the most part and you will be able to enjoy more time in this beautiful community.

Sandra.....all the best to you. It was a pleasure.

Perfect away-from-it-all

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect place if you want peace and quiet and to hear nothing but the sound of the waves at night. The beach is 100 ft from the door. The cottage is well equipped, full kitchen, comfortable bed, nice porch, lots of beach chairs, toys, books, etc. We would definitely stay here again.

A Tropical paradise ,small friendly village

  • 5 of 5

Sandra was so nice to meet us at the cruise dock and gave us the information and waited with us until our rental car arrived. we provisioned supplies and journeyed out to High Rock a sleepy village located along the Atlantic on the highest elevation of land on Grand Bahama. On arrival we found the house supplied and tastefully appointed with everything we needed as we opened it up and let the trade winds blow thru we rushed down to the ocean for a dip in the amazing turquoise bath tub warm waters. We had our teenagers along as they snorkeled we met some locals and struck up some conversations as every one is so friendly and outgoing! we then ventured down for some fresh broiled lobster at Bishops down the beach a short walk to celebrate our return to the Island and walk the beaches for miles!

The following day we stopped up the street to see the famous High rock light house seen in photos around the world built by Rev.Cecil Kemp,This chance meeting was the start of a great friendship he basically gave us the total tour of his church, light house,,,,the next day he took our kids and us on a canoe & kayak adventure to several blue holes inland mangrove swamp, and the last day a tour inland to see historic sites were the elders of years past carved out wells by hand to gain access to the islands fresh water supply and native plants & trees. He wore the kids out showing them the beauty of the island I in all the years past have never seen, and as we gazed from the top of his light house we watched a stingray glide by in the pristine waters bellow so cool!

We would do breakfast in the morning and have our coffee on the cottages spacious beautiful porch , venture to the ocean for a relaxing dip and show the kids around the Island from the East End to the West end returning for a dip after dinner and meeting up with the local neighbors on their return from work and wrapping up the night on the cottages porch sharing a island beer and talking. The cottages washer and dryer made us feel so bad we hauled all the extra clothes we did not need to have along, The shower outside was great to wash the sand off & the lap of the ocean on the beach made us sleep so well at night as the kids took the loft upstairs there was nothing we needed during our stay as Sandra had every detail covered from beach chairs to towels as listed. The locals made a great impression on our kids & we made so many new friends it was hard to say good byes our last day!

Eden Cottage Spectacular

  • 5 of 5

My wife an I were looking for a perfect get away for the Whit Monday Holiday. We were told about Eden Cottage through a friend who had stayed in the Bahamas before at Eden and who knew about all the Caribbean "hot spots". But upon looking at the website recommended we found that it had already been rented for that period. When we wrote to Sandra she advised us of a second cottage located on the same complex that was newer than the one advertised. It was a couple dollars more but certainly worth the difference in costs given the additional space and amenities. Upon our arrival to the Airport we found locating our rental car company more difficult than locating the cottage which is about 45 minutes from the Airport. Once we settled in we had a fantastic getaway never leaving the cottage except to go for a dip in the turquoise ocean. It is truly paradise but I would recommend you take your incest repellent as the mosquitoes can become a challenge to a non islander. I would truly recommend Eden II for the perfect romantic and/or family getaway. Be sure to stock up your first trip to the local store which in Freeport and several miles from High Rock as you will never want to leave the settlement to go anywhere else. We found ALL of the local residents extremely helpful, pleasant and accommodating. I will return with my family of 5 on my next vacation so they can experience the beauty of sleeping a stones throw from the ocean for themselves.

Wonderful, Secluded Island Get Away with a Small Village Experience

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I brought our family to the islands for Spring Break this year, (Son 17, Daughter 12 and Daughter 9), for 10 days. A friend recommended that we get in touch with Sandra, because like us they hate the busy, crowded and expensive resort areas. Well we could not have been any happier. Sandra immediately got back to us and helped us coordinate everything and then met us at the airport and welcomed us to Grand Bahamas. We rented a car from Dollar and Sandra took us to Solomon's Grocery store to stock up. She is the sweetest woman on the island. We then drove to High Rock and found the most BEAUTIFUL island colonial style cottage right on the beach. The inside was cozy and cheery. The beach and view was spectacular. We hardly ever used the air conditioners because the Trade Wind breezes were enough and you could fall asleep listening to the gentle waves. The children all slept up in the loft and had a ball bunking together. Plus we all loved the beach which is literally across the street and not only very tranquil but basically private. The water was always turquoise and perfect for swimming, playing and snorkeling. We brought our snorkel gear and swam out to the reef on a daily basis. The small local "restaurants" at the end of the road are not that great, but we did not care. We brought food to cook and grilled everyday on Sandra's fire pit. Every morning we had breakfast on the front porch taking in the breathtaking view of the Caribbean. We loved living with the local villagers and one morning Clarence (local villager) took our son out fishing and brought back Grouper, Mako and Snapper to grill. Plus we went Conch diving and made our own Conch Chowder. Everyone in the village are wonderful and welcoming. (Make sure you visit the local ice cream shop at the circle and Junior for wine and rum up on the main road). We lived for 10 days in our own little spectacular world and only drove into Freeport on a couple of occasions to visit Port Lucayan Marketplace, go to dinner a couple of times and hit Solomon's again. We visited Lucayan National Park a short drive away. Our Easter dinner this year was served with the spectacular views and then an evening swim. Our next to last day we went to the Coconut Festival in nearby Pelican Point and enjoyed local drinks and food. We all hated leaving and will definitely return to our new gorgeous island getaway. I cannot recommend Eden Cottage enough. Simply Paradise. Thank you Sandra, we shall return!!!
