About The Owner

We are a family of five. Hans-Erik & Lissa Johnsen plus 3 boys! We live in Raleigh NC and LOVE to visit the NC mountains. We hope you enjoy our vacation spot as much as we do!!

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2004

Why The Owner chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

We love the NC mountains. There is so much to do but it is still very relaxing! Our boys love to hike in the woods, raft/canoe and tube down rivers, ski & tube on the ski slopes, they love Grandfather Mountain park, the Blue Ridge parkway, Boone, Blowing Rock, Appalachian trail, gem mining, Tweetsie Railroad and all the many other fun things to do in the mountains!! Plus they love playing on the 6 acres of our house!

What makes this cabin unique

There is an open fire pit that is fun to roast hotdogs and marshmallows. Very close to Appalachian State, Boone and Blowing Rock. Lots of GREAT hiking & rivers for rafting, canoeing or fishing. Fun places nearby with Tweetsie Railroad, Gem mining and more. Great shopping in downtown Blowing Rock. Skiing and snow tubing nearby.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This is our 5th time visiting Higher Ground for the holidays! Upon our arrival, the cabin was nicely decorated for the holiday and was cozy and clean. We love the area downstairs for kids since there are usually a few families that come together. And the fire pit outside and the hot tub on the deck are also BIG HITS with everyone. This is a great cabin with all the amenities included and we recommend it highly!!!

Great location and great cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Higher Ground several times and had wonderful experiences. The cabin and the surrounding grounds are always clean and kept in excellent condition. We love the huge deck with the very cool deck furniture and with the 6 acres it is secluded and quiet. Our dogs love it here as they have lots of room for lounging on the porch or by the fireplace. The first floor is easy access for loading in if you have older dogs or companions. You can't beat the location, close to Boone, Blowing Rock, Valle Crusis, Linville, and Banner Elk!!!We love Higher Ground and highly recommend for vacationing!!

We will be back!

  • 5 of 5

My family recently spent a long weekend at Higher Ground. This was our ninth time over the last eight years! We LOVE staying on this private, six acres, just minutes from Boone. Several times we have driven up the long driveway, briefly stopping for the crossing of turkeys or deer!

Also, the house has always been clean and orderly. Another plus to this house is the downstairs area, perfectly suitable for children (or teens) who need their own space. Although we usually bring our own wood, it is nice that the owners have provided extra (in case we run low).

Thanks so much to the owners of Higher Ground for sharing your home with us.

We’ll be back soon!

Could be so much more

  • 2 of 5

Upon our arrival at Higher Ground Cabin, we were very disappointed! The cabin was dirty, especially the floors, the appliances were very outdated especially the coffee maker. The basement provided great entertainment for the 4 children however, again it was in need of cleaning and repair. Also upon arrival, there was barely any fire wood and of the few pieces that were there, were very wet and we were unable to light a fire in the fireplace for Friday night and the rental agency refused to bring any until Saturday. This was our 5th year to the mountains and the first at this cabin and likely our last. The cabin could be so much more!

Owner's Response: Sorry about your experience. We strive to have the cabin clean and apologize to you. We have taken efforts to ensure this doesn't happen again. As far as the fire wood, we don't advertise fire wood but do try to keep wood on hand for guests. Sorry you had to wait until Saturday to get wood delivered. I hope you will try the cabin again ... We host many guests each year and this is our first time hearing of an unclean arrival. Thanks for your candid review.
