Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Opened for guests in 2010, HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has a 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road and you will be the only guests. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!

The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Private laundry room with all supplies is available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.

A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the patio next to the lanai. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.

We encourage you to take the time to read our GUEST COMMENTS. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'.

The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring and yes there is now WIFI in the cottage.

Have fun!

Our Aloha,

Todd and Madeleine

About Madeleine Loewen

Todd and Madeleine Loewen are the new caretakers and cottage keepers here at Hulili.

A full time farm, Hulili grows tropical fruits called longan (lawn-gone) and lychee (lie-chee). There are appx. 8 acres in orchard. The remaining acreage holds house, barn, cottage and an enormous 'front yard'.

Madeleine Loewen purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Madeleine Loewen chose Hilo District

We were delighted with the 'end of the road' location, and the undeveloped, unspoiled view of the ocean and surrounding country. The 500 foot elevation means better view and pleasant breezes. The land has a gentle slope toward the orchards and ocean. The surrounding land makes it seem as if we are on hundreds of acres.

What makes this cottage unique

There is the feeling of being the only people on the island. With such privacy and space, we enjoy outside living morning to night! Mornings on the lanai as you watch the sunrise over the Pacific are incredible, as are the evening sunset colors and moonrise. We have less rain than Hilo and enjoy tropical trade winds that keep us cooler in the summer than in town.

Beautiful awe-inspiring location and a short drive from all that the Big Island has to offer, make for a perfect vacation!

Guestbook comments from the owner

...thanks to Norm, Del now has a makeshift driving range complete with distance markers out in the horse pasture. It certainly isn't as pretty as yours, but due to the drought and grasshopper infestation, he can always find the golf balls and still avoid the rattlers!

Thanks for a wonderful stay.

The perfect spot to see the real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property with beautiful hosts. The views are spectacular and the tranquility is second to none. Nothing but the sound of some coqui frogs and birds. The cottage was immaculately clean and fully equipped. The king-sized sleep number bed was so comfortable and our daughter slept most nights on the outdoor queen bed. The farm is perfectly safe for the kids to run wild with no shoes and no worries while eating mouthfuls of longan berries! We had complete privacy and the fruit bowl on the lanai would magically refill with lemons and avocado's. Hulili farm is perfectly located to explore the east side of the Big Island which is a must see! I would wholeheartedly recommend Hulili farm to those who want to use it as a safe and peaceful base to see the un-touristy, real Hawaii. Mahalo Todd, Madeleine and family for a most wonderful stay.

Complete bliss

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent four nights at Hulili Farm and we honestly enjoyed every second of our stay. We were blown away by the attention to detail and cleanliness of the cottage, and the thoughtfulness of Todd and Madeleine - there was a freshly baked loaf (which was delicious) and a bowl of fruit picked from their farm waiting for us on the table when we arrived. The cottage itself is so cosy and comfortable and has everything you could need, including a well stocked little kitchen, and the lanai with its rocking chairs and hanging bed is perfect for just relaxing and staring out at the beautiful view of the farm and the ocean. You have total privacy in the cottage (with the exception for us being visits from the gorgeous and cheeky puppy Lucy, who we adored) and that along with the farm surroundings makes it perfect for those seeking peace and seclusion. If we were going to fly back to Hilo tomorrow there would be no question where we would want to stay. We loved Hulili Farm and thank you Todd and Madeleine for being so friendly and making our stay absolutely lovely. :)

The property was as advertised, but it was far more peaceful that anyone can put into words.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Hulili Farm. Todd and Madeleine were very welcoming hosts and gave us a tour of the farm. I learned about all sorts of fruit that I had never heard of. We had pineapple, mango, and bananas picked fresh. It tasted so much different that what we get it the grocery stores here in the US mainland. The two rocking chairs were our favorite place to be, looking out at the trees and the ocean view. I would highly recommend visiting the Hulili Farm if you want some peace and quiet, and then take the 20 minute drive into Hilo for many exciting activities. We will be going back!

Quiet, relaxing, beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Hulili Farm is the perfect get away on the Big Island! Our stay was just what we needed. We had busy days in Hilo and then would come back to the farm for quiet, relaxing evenings. The cottage was clean, the bed was very comfy, and Madeleine was an accommodating host. And for the early riser, the sunrise over the Pacific was stunning to watch while sitting on the lanai!

Relaxed location with a beautiful view!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the farm cottage, and Madeleine was a wonderful host. The location was perfect for us - away from the busy Hilo area but close enough for a short drive to anywhere on the east coast. Breakfast with fresh lychee and bananas each morning was a treat. Cottage was just the right size for the two of us and the farm is a beautiful place. Would highly recommend for a couple looking for a relaxed getaway! Thanks for a wonderful stay, Madeleine!
