Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Opened for guests in 2010, HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has a 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road and you will be the only guests. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!

The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Private laundry room with all supplies is available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.

A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the patio next to the lanai. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.

We encourage you to take the time to read our GUEST COMMENTS. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'.

The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring and yes there is now WIFI in the cottage.

Have fun!

Our Aloha,

Todd and Madeleine

About Madeleine Loewen

Todd and Madeleine Loewen are the new caretakers and cottage keepers here at Hulili.

A full time farm, Hulili grows tropical fruits called longan (lawn-gone) and lychee (lie-chee). There are appx. 8 acres in orchard. The remaining acreage holds house, barn, cottage and an enormous 'front yard'.

Madeleine Loewen purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Madeleine Loewen chose Hilo District

We were delighted with the 'end of the road' location, and the undeveloped, unspoiled view of the ocean and surrounding country. The 500 foot elevation means better view and pleasant breezes. The land has a gentle slope toward the orchards and ocean. The surrounding land makes it seem as if we are on hundreds of acres.

What makes this cottage unique

There is the feeling of being the only people on the island. With such privacy and space, we enjoy outside living morning to night! Mornings on the lanai as you watch the sunrise over the Pacific are incredible, as are the evening sunset colors and moonrise. We have less rain than Hilo and enjoy tropical trade winds that keep us cooler in the summer than in town.

Beautiful awe-inspiring location and a short drive from all that the Big Island has to offer, make for a perfect vacation!

Guestbook comments from the owner

...thanks to Norm, Del now has a makeshift driving range complete with distance markers out in the horse pasture. It certainly isn't as pretty as yours, but due to the drought and grasshopper infestation, he can always find the golf balls and still avoid the rattlers!

Thanks for a wonderful stay.

The perfect spot to see the real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property with beautiful hosts. The views are spectacular and the tranquility is second to none. Nothing but the sound of some coqui frogs and birds. The cottage was immaculately clean and fully equipped. The king-sized sleep number bed was so comfortable and our daughter slept most nights on the outdoor queen bed. The farm is perfectly safe for the kids to run wild with no shoes and no worries while eating mouthfuls of longan berries! We had complete privacy and the fruit bowl on the lanai would magically refill with lemons and avocado's. Hulili farm is perfectly located to explore the east side of the Big Island which is a must see! I would wholeheartedly recommend Hulili farm to those who want to use it as a safe and peaceful base to see the un-touristy, real Hawaii. Mahalo Todd, Madeleine and family for a most wonderful stay.

Relaxed location with a beautiful view!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the farm cottage, and Madeleine was a wonderful host. The location was perfect for us - away from the busy Hilo area but close enough for a short drive to anywhere on the east coast. Breakfast with fresh lychee and bananas each morning was a treat. Cottage was just the right size for the two of us and the farm is a beautiful place. Would highly recommend for a couple looking for a relaxed getaway! Thanks for a wonderful stay, Madeleine!

Relaxing, peaceful, quiet retreat. Flexible place for homebase for whatever daytrips you plan.

  • 5 of 5

Perfect accommodations to enjoy a simple, relaxed vacation. Very gracious hosts who welcome you to share the pleasures of their beautiful farm. Comfortable retreat to read, think, converse, relax without noise and distractions. We truly enjoyed this tucked-away location, still central enough to explore so much of what the Big Island has to offer. It was a great experience for us on our first visit here, making this our new favorite island.

A Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

We were able to experience a quieter and relaxed life on Hawaii at Hulili Farm Cottage... and loved every moment of our stay! Every morning we lounged on the lanai, relaxing in the rockers while sipping coffee. The kitchen was fully stocked, so making meals was easy. We didn't miss the A/C... the cool breezes from across the farm did their job with open windows and ceiling fan. Hearing the birds in the morning (and the neighboring roosters) was a lovely wake-up call, and falling asleep to the coqui frogs was enjoyable. We didn't miss TV either... it was a welcome break, though the WiFi was a nice touch! Best of all, the farm is the perfect location to explore the Hilo side of the Big Island. We found ourselves exploring scenic routes and very easily traveled to Mauna Kea and Volcanoes National Park. The drive into Hilo was beautiful and made us feel like locals rather than tourists. The hosts were available when we had travel questions but otherwise allowed us to come and go as we pleased. It helped make staying at the cottage feel like home. All the other reviews are spot on -- this is a special place that you have to experience to truly understand.

Great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

It was great seeing the side of "real Hawaii." The cottage was as advertised and better. The pictures do not do the surroundings justice. While the ocean is a distance away (still has an ocean view), the ocean breezes were constant, gentle and cool. The hosts were more than welcoming and took the time to hang a bunch of the most delicious bananas from the tree outside the private lanai. We would not hesitate to stay here again and would recommend it to anyone.

Relaxing, Refreshing and Rejuvinating

  • 5 of 5

It was a joy and a blessing to be at the Hulili farm cottage. It was a place where we could settle in, enjoy the view, and be at peace. The beauty of the land, the orchard, the flowers, the sea, and the sky are spectacular! And the rocking chairs are perfect!

The warm welcome we received from owner's Madeline and Todd was the first gift, of many that they gave. Madeline's help with all things cottage related and Todd's advice with all things activity related were great. Our time there was enriched by their warm aloha spirit.

The cottage was easy to move into, and we very soon referred to it as "home". It is very nicely equipped and stocked so living there was easy. It was nice to have a full size range and refrigerator, so we only needed one big grocery trip and a couple of quick stops for milk and bread, etc. It was also very helpful to have laundry facilities and detergent handy.

Every morning we spent time relaxing on the covered patio watching and photographing the many birds. And we loved stargazing at the wonderful sky above at night. During the days we explored the beautiful and varied island. The location was a good base to launch us into adventures on both sides of the island. One tip: when you go up Mauna Kea to see the star show, dress warm, bring a jacket, a hat, and gloves because it's cold. There is much to explore, people to meet, new things to try, history to learn, art to enjoy and the aloha life to experience on this big island.

There is only one downside--we couldn't stay forever!
