Hulili Tropical Fruit Farm- Let our 160 FIVE STAR REVIEWS tell the story!

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Opened for guests in 2010, HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has a 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road and you will be the only guests. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!

The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Private laundry room with all supplies is available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.

A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the patio next to the lanai. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.

We encourage you to take the time to read our GUEST COMMENTS. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'.

The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring and yes there is now WIFI in the cottage.

Have fun!

Our Aloha,

Todd and Madeleine

About Madeleine Loewen

Todd and Madeleine Loewen are the new caretakers and cottage keepers here at Hulili.

A full time farm, Hulili grows tropical fruits called longan (lawn-gone) and lychee (lie-chee). There are appx. 8 acres in orchard. The remaining acreage holds house, barn, cottage and an enormous 'front yard'.

Madeleine Loewen purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Madeleine Loewen chose Hakalau

We were delighted with the 'end of the road' location, and the undeveloped, unspoiled view of the ocean and surrounding country. The 500 foot elevation means better view and pleasant breezes. The land has a gentle slope toward the orchards and ocean. The surrounding land makes it seem as if we are on hundreds of acres.

What makes this cottage unique

There is the feeling of being the only people on the island. With such privacy and space, we enjoy outside living morning to night! Mornings on the lanai as you watch the sunrise over the Pacific are incredible, as are the evening sunset colors and moonrise. We have less rain than Hilo and enjoy tropical trade winds that keep us cooler in the summer than in town.

Beautiful awe-inspiring location and a short drive from all that the Big Island has to offer, make for a perfect vacation!

Guestbook comments from the owner

...thanks to Norm, Del now has a makeshift driving range complete with distance markers out in the horse pasture. It certainly isn't as pretty as yours, but due to the drought and grasshopper infestation, he can always find the golf balls and still avoid the rattlers!

Thanks for a wonderful stay.

The perfect spot to see the real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property with beautiful hosts. The views are spectacular and the tranquility is second to none. Nothing but the sound of some coqui frogs and birds. The cottage was immaculately clean and fully equipped. The king-sized sleep number bed was so comfortable and our daughter slept most nights on the outdoor queen bed. The farm is perfectly safe for the kids to run wild with no shoes and no worries while eating mouthfuls of longan berries! We had complete privacy and the fruit bowl on the lanai would magically refill with lemons and avocado's. Hulili farm is perfectly located to explore the east side of the Big Island which is a must see! I would wholeheartedly recommend Hulili farm to those who want to use it as a safe and peaceful base to see the un-touristy, real Hawaii. Mahalo Todd, Madeleine and family for a most wonderful stay.

Relaxing visit

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time to the Big Island. Hulili farm was perfect and peaceful. The grounds are beautiful. The cottage had everything we needed. My favorite part was the sounds of all the birds and frogs through out the day and night. It rained a lot while we were here but we didn’t mind. If we wanted sun we just drove north west.

Quiet and relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

Exactly what we were looking for. Highly recommended. Secluded with amazing views and easy access to scenic drives. The cottage is close to the main house, but the hosts completely respect your privacy. They were very welcoming and thoughtful. The lanai is fantastic even on rainy nights. We would definitely stay here again!

What an amazing place!

  • 5 of 5

Madeliene was fantastic about communicating with us prior to our stay, answering our questions, and providing us with information. We were welcomed with fresh-baked banana bread, fresh bananas and avacados and a clean, well-appointed, and comfortable place to get away from it all! The views at the farm are incredible, Madeliene and Todd are very knowledgeable about Big Island activities and adventures, and the accommodations were comfortable. We loved how avacados fell from the sky every day (well, the tree, but still...), and Todd's care in hanging a large bunch of fresh bananas from our tree regularly. The lanai is such a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the sunrise and the location is perfect for exploring all the Big Island has to offer.

When we return to the Big Island, we will absolutely stay at Hulili Farm Cottage again. It was heartbreaking to have to leave!

If you are seeking resort-type accommodations or the hustle and bustle of Kona-type living, this is not the place for you. However, if you want to enjoy the fresh breezes, beautiful flora/fauna, and peace and quiet of life on a farm surrounded by authentic Hawaii, this IS the place for you!
