Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)
Opened for guests in 2010, HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has a 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road and you will be the only guests. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!
The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Private laundry room with all supplies is available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.
A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the patio next to the lanai. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.
We encourage you to take the time to read our GUEST COMMENTS. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'.
The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring and yes there is now WIFI in the cottage.

About Madeleine Loewen
Todd and Madeleine Loewen are the new caretakers and cottage keepers here at Hulili. A full time farm, Hulili grows tropical fruits called longan (lawn-gone) and lychee (lie-chee). There are appx. 8 acres in orchard. The remaining acreage holds house, barn, cottage and an enormous 'front yard'.
Madeleine Loewen purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Madeleine Loewen chose Hakalau
We were delighted with the 'end of the road' location, and the undeveloped, unspoiled view of the ocean and surrounding country. The 500 foot elevation means better view and pleasant breezes. The land has a gentle slope toward the orchards and ocean. The surrounding land makes it seem as if we are on hundreds of acres.
What makes this Cottage unique
There is the feeling of being the only people on the island. With such privacy and space, we enjoy outside living morning to night! Mornings on the lanai as you watch the sunrise over the Pacific are incredible, as are the evening sunset colors and moonrise. We have less rain than Hilo and enjoy tropical trade winds that keep us cooler in the summer than in town. Beautiful awe-inspiring location and a short drive from all that the Big Island has to offer, make for a perfect vacation!

The perfect spot to see the real Hawaii
This is a beautiful property with beautiful hosts. The views are spectacular and the tranquility is second to none. Nothing but the sound of some coqui frogs and birds. The cottage was immaculately clean and fully equipped. The king-sized sleep number bed was so comfortable and our daughter slept most nights on the outdoor queen bed. The farm is perfectly safe for the kids to run wild with no shoes and no worries while eating mouthfuls of longan berries! We had complete privacy and the fruit bowl on the lanai would magically refill with lemons and avocado's. Hulili farm is perfectly located to explore the east side of the Big Island which is a must see! I would wholeheartedly recommend Hulili farm to those who want to use it as a safe and peaceful base to see the un-touristy, real Hawaii. Mahalo Todd, Madeleine and family for a most wonderful stay.
Fabulous Stay - Idyllic Location - Great Hosts
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hulili Farm. Great away from it all place to stay. Idyllic Location. Perfect hosts- nothing was too much trouble. Fabulous views. An amazing array of tropical fruits. Loved the dawn chorus, the evening sounds of the cocqui frogs and the company of Lucy the dog. Loads to do nearby, walks, waterfalls, Hilo. Dont miss the botanical gardens - the best we saw in Hawaii. And of course dont mis the awesome volcano. We'd go back in a heartbeat. But it's a long way from England!
A hidden gem
We loved the cottage! It's quiet and peaceful. You can't beat the views. The hosts were welcoming and helpful. Just a short drive to Hilo and the surrounding attractions. I would highly recommend it if you are looking to experience the area and also want time to relax!
Paradise within paradise!
Everything was lush and green; sitting on the porch enjoying our coffee every morning renewed our spirits and inspired us to get going to go explore. The cottage was perfect in every way. So relaxing and peaceful.
Garden of Eden!
Stunningly manicured property with the most beautiful orchard we have very seen! Superb location north of Hilo (about a 20 minute drive) with a magnificent vista view of the Pacific. Warm and friendly hosts, helpful yet non-obtrusive. We loved sitting on the porch (lanai). I could just stare at the ocean view for hours on end. Longans were in season while we were there, and they are delicious. We also had bananas. The cottage was immaculately clean and very comfortable. We felt at home. Thank you so much!
This was our first time to the Big Island. Hulili farm was perfect and peaceful. The grounds are beautiful. The cottage had everything we needed. My favorite part was the sounds of all the birds and frogs through out the day and night. It rained a lot while we were here but we didn’t mind. If we wanted sun we just drove north west.
AKAKA FALLS, HONOMU planatation town with shops & eating & KOLEKOLE BEACH PARK are 5-10 minutes away.
HAKALAU BAY with a river to swim in and small black sand beach is just down the hill. Two ZIP LINES are minutes away.
LAUPAHOEHOE POINT and the TRAIN MUSUEM are 15 minutes. HAWAIIAN TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS is 15 minutes. HILO TOWN is 20 minutes. Waimea is 50 minutes. BEAUTIFUL DRIVES IN EVERY DIRECTION!
