“Each day, I would ride a boogie board in the perfect surf, kayak the pristine estuary that borders the property, do a little birding or horseback riding, and tour by car and foot the scenic Sierra mountains. Then, about 9 p.m. each of the three nights I was there, I’d walk a few hundred yards from my villa to the research station. There, I worked alongside trained staff, spotting nesting turtles, then digging up the eggs for incubation ... ” The Washington Post
The lovely, vine-draped, 'Casa Luna' (House of the Moon) offers a wonderful tropical experience. Casa Luna is one of 10 beautiful Villas for rent at Playa las Tortugas.
Playa Las Tortugas lies on the west coast of Mexico just 70 miles north of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas, in a setting with miles of sandy beach on our west and hundreds of acres of mangrove estuary on our east, nesting habitat for sea turtles and more than 125 species of birds.
Your scenic drive north through areas of old-growth jungle which border the coast is simply spectacular. Before arriving you might select a variety of fresh fruits and coconut products in stands along the road. Optionally we can arrange for transportation for you to and from the airport, and meals prepared by our wonderful cooks can be arranged.
Our Casa Luna is the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation. It is nestled amidst palm trees and beautiful gardens. Listen to the surf as you have your morning coffee, or fall asleep to gentle waves at night.
Each of the two king bedroom suites is decorated with rustic furnishings from the artisan community of 'Tonalá. Sliding doors open to patios with views of the coconut palm grove and gardens to the beach. The suites are complemented with colorfully tiled bathrooms. King-sized beds, desks, and ample closet space and drawers help to insure your comfort.
The main floor is comprised of living room with additional sleeping for two, dining area, a well-equipped kitchen including dishwasher, breakfast bar, and a half-bath. All designed for your convenience in your vacation home. Take the opportunity to enjoy a traditional meal prepared by one of our cooking staff, or make yourself at home in our complete kitchen. Individual shaded terraces, with that 'big blue' Pacific ocean view, connect to the living and dining areas providing a nice space for a relaxed breakfast or afternoon nap.
Up above you'll find a peaceful terrace that spans the entire rooftop, with its own woven-palm shade 'palapa', with overhead fan. Take your favorite book and beverage. Listen to the surf, and the sounds of the many birds. It is also the perfect spot for sunbathing, grilling lunch or dinner and watching a spectacular sunset. Add a margarita or piña colada and every element is in place for the perfect tropical vacation.
Our entire state of Nayarit area enjoys one of the most favorable climates in the world. Average daily year- round temperatures range from highs of 80-85 degrees (perfect beach weather) to lows of 60-70 degrees (perfect sleeping weather). Swim year round, but consider packing a light sweater for the evenings in the winter months. Rain, when it falls, generally occurs between June and September as night-time or pre-dawn thundershowers.
You can visit small typical Mexican villages, enjoy fresh fish and other local seafood at small rustic beachfront restaurants, tour a tropical river and waterfalls, see historic San Blas, and drive up through the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains to colonial Tepic where crafts of the Huichol Indians are found.
Playa Las Tortugas has kilometers of uncrowded, clean sand beach, and a number of activities both on property and nearby such as Surfing, Wave Kayaking, Boogie Boarding, Fishing, and Shelling, Canoeing, Whale Watching, Bird Watching, Walking or Running on Miles of warm Sand Beach, and Sea Turtle Conservation activities (during season) at the Sea Turtle Conservation Camp. Frequently there is one festival or another in small towns within an hour of our location. There are a number of excursions you might take, with or without a guide.
Playa Las Tortugas is located on a section of coastline which is nesting habitat of several species of sea turtle in the beautiful state of Nayarit, Mexico 70 miles north of the Puerto Vallarta (PVR) International Airport and about 50 miles west of Tepic, the colonial capital of Nayarit.
We are happy to arrange transportation for you in our private shuttle, you may rent a car and drive your self which a large number of our guests do, or if you'd like to be more adventurous you may decide to come by bus and local taxi. We can send you details on the numerous car rental companies, or instructions on which buses and local taxis to take. It's quite easy to find your way from the Puerto Vallarta (PVR) International Airport to Playa Las Tortugas, and the roads are normally well-maintained. Your valid driver's license is accepted in Mexico, and the driving rules are virtually the same as most countries. Write us for a copy of detailed driving instructions and a map. Your scenic drive north from the airport takes less than 2 hours and goes through areas of old-growth jungle and coastal hills.

We met in Mexico 34 years ago. It took until 2001 to find the perfect place! We have 4 grown kids, recently moved from Truckee, CA. to Reno, NV. and spend at least 2.5 months down at our lovely Casa Luna. Plan to retire at least half time at PLT in the near future. Casa Luna is the only place where we can spend time
at and Not need a vacation when we get back to our home in the US.
Marianne purchased this villa in 2001
We looked for a long time to find a place in Mexico...in various areas. The developer of PLT had a real vision when this place was built. It is pristine and quiet...no vendors to hassle us and every villa has a wonderful view of the ocean. It is an eco friendly resort, and the efforts to rescue endangered sea turtles are just outstanding.
Peace and quiet. Read those books you've been putting off. Enjoy your family and friends. Everything slows down so you really enjoy your surroundings!
We came here with great expectations and were not disappointed. Playa las Tortugas is an amazing place.....so peaceful and beautiful! Casa Luna fit our needs perfectly. The extra beds in the living room kept our children separate...which added to the peace:)
Two decks, plus the upstairs palapa offered such a good variety and different awesome views of the ocean. The sounds of the birds, the ocean, the breeze...just the perfect vacation. Can't wait to return!
Casa Luna is a perfect place to unwind and slow down. Situated among a beautiful landscape of palm trees and flowerbeds, the house is comfortable and has so many individual spaces that everyone can find their favorite spot to relax. My husband and I were there for a week with our 15 year old boys, and it was wonderful. We swam over to Platanitos one day for lunch, helped with the baby turtle release two nights, caught the sunset every night, took photos of the flowers and trees on the grounds, boogie boarded almost every day (several times a day!), and swam in the wonderfully clean and beautiful pools. The pools and the ocean seemed to be the perfect temperature. The waves in the ocean were excellent for boogie boarding. We had meals cooked for us one day, and that was a treat. It was wonderful to wake up in the morning, have breakfast on one of the decks, and answer the question "what are we going to do today?" One word of advice: make sure you use bug spray while you are there. You can't always tell that you are getting bit. Once we got home, our bites became apparent and new ones kept appearing for several days. If you are itchy, Google how to apply hot water to the bites with a Q-tip. This was a miracle for us! I would highly recommend Casa Luna for a relaxing vacation. After a couple days there, it felt like time had recalibrated itself and we had been there a week already. After a week, it felt like we had been gone a month. The best thing about PLT is the isolation -- you feel yourself slowing down and connecting to nature. The beach is wonderfully uncrowded and the ocean is wonderful. Also make sure you take time to look at all the stars at night. We had an amazing time!
Had a great time at playas las tortugas. This place is very relaxing and a great getaway. Marianne and Pascual were very helpful as well as the driver who drove us from PV to Playas las Tortugas. Ask them anything and they will try to assist or inform you as best as they can. They do warn you about the bugs and it is true, you will get bit by mosquitos make sure to take a good repellant.
Casa Luna was a fantastic place for the four of us to stay and was very well equipped. We all needed a place to relax, play in the waves or just read a book. The weather was fantastic as we have always found it to be on the Pacific coast of Mexico. WIFI service was far better than we expected allowing us to stay in touch with family and what was going on in the world. The maid and cooking services were awesome. We cooked ourselves for 5 days and took advantage of the cooking service for the other 4 days. We should have booked the cooking service for the whole time. The authentic food tasted fabulous and no shortage of it either. We met several of the owner/neighbours while we were there. They were all very friendly and welcoming. One of the best features of Playa Las Tortugas was the daily release of recently hatched turtles from the Turtle Sanctuary right next door. We would definitely go back again.
This is my 3rd stay at Casa Luna for a girl's getaway. Playa Las Tortugas is an amazing get away from the hustle and bustle of life. It absolutely forces you to slow down and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this remote beach getaway. I hadn't realized how addicted I was to my electronic equipment until my services were less than what we expect in the US. We had great wi-fi service but my cell service was not as reliable as it had been in the past which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. I did find a wi-fi based text application that worked well so I could still communicate with my family. Every time I come there is something different. This year we watched as workers harvested the coconuts and trimmed the trees. It was amazing to watch them climb and descend these huge trees faster than I can the stairs. One of the workers accidentally ran over one of the water spigots right in front of the house which ended up cutting our water off to the house. Since it was Sunday, we were thinking that it there was no way that they could get the pipe fixed and water back on before we left Monday. As we were thinking of a plan B (down by the pool), one of the staff was on the property, knew what to do, and fixed the problem. We had water by the time we returned to the house. The April weather was perfect ... warm but not humid. The sun is intense so don’t be fooled and remember to put on your sunscreen. I was a little concerned about keeping up with some triathalon training during my week but the pool was large enough I was able to swim the perimeter and get a great workout. The 2 master suites gave us ample privacy and are large enough you don't feel closed in. I loved the little gecko that visited me in the shower my first day. The kitchen is well stocked with all the pans, dishes, utensils, and drink ware we needed. Just a little hint, put EVERYTHING that is open in the fridge to keep the ants out. They are tiny little guys and appear within minutes. We spent most of our time sitting under the palapa on the roof from morning coffee to sunset. The views are ones you don’t want to waste by staying inside.
I stayed a week in Casa Luna with my two kids and my wife and we had a wonderful time. Playa Tortugas is an isolated spot in the Pacific Coast where you can enjoy the sea, a close to virgin beach, the pool and a good place to stay an relax. Casa Luna is the perfect size for a small family that like to enjoy tranquility, good food, and open spaces. The staff did a wonderful job to make us feel at home and they took care of the cooking (prepared to eat well), the cleaning and we even got some coconuts. Marianne thanks a lot for sharing your place with us.
We spent 2 weeks in late Match 2015 at Villa Luna. The common areas of the Playa Las Tortuga sight are well maintained with gardens ,a nice pool ,plenty of space between the villas and an awesome 7 mile, undeveloped beach that is swimmable.
Villa Luna however has fallen away behind in maintenance and is NOT recommended unless you want a "camping-type" experience. Eg. Our ceiling in the kitchen (2nd floor) dripped continuously for 10 days due to a 10 hour rain storm the day after we arrived. The floor of the sundeck (3rd floor) was the problem. It was beautifully tiled ,wall to wall, many years ago but the grout has cracked and leaks into room below. The sliding doors don`t slide & some of the screens don`t fit. We got tired of putting them back on the their tracks. Worst of all, the villa reeks of a musty ,mildew odor. We tried airing it out but it did not improve the atmosphere enough. There has been a long term build up of mildew in anything made of fabric , etc. The villa`s interior atmosphere is close to ,if not, a true health hazard. I understand that the villa is ~15 years old & in a tropical climate deterioration takes place so there must be considerable expense in keeping up with it. None of these problems were made known to us by the rentee but they now tell us that major renovations are planned for June 2015. We understand from talking to others on the sight that other villas are in better shape.
FYI: It is 25-30 minute drive on a very rough 10 km road into Playa Las Tortugas. Don`t give up ,just keep going (best to be driving a Hummer though). We have vacationed in Mexico at least 6 times including a couple of days in the jungle near the Guatemala border so we aren`t total novices & this is the 1st complaint we have filed.
'Casa Luna' and Playa Las Tortugas feature an uncrowded, clean beach, swimming pool, and a number of activities both on property and nearby such as Boogie Boarding, Canoeing, Whale Watching, Bird Watching, Walking and Running on over 5 miles of sand beach, Deep Sea Fishing, Sea Turtle Conservation activities, Children's Pool, Excursions to waterfall and other sights, Wave-surfing in the kayaks or on boogie boards, Canoeing in the calm waters of the estuary, Surfing or Surf-fishing in front of the property, Enjoying a boat ride for Coastal Sightseeing, Ocean Fishing trips, Horseback Riding down several miles of the beach, Bird watching in our 1100 acres of tidal mangrove estuary; The El Cora Waterfall is found just outside the small mountain village of El Cora where you'll discover several beautiful waterfalls...the highest is over 100 feet and has a wonderful pool at the bottom of it, The closest golf courses are at Tepic (about 1 hour 15 minutes)
