Overview

About the property

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Start with what Frommer’s Guide says are Sapphire Beach’s “Jawdropping Views”. And you won't get closer to the water than this listing unless you rent a boat.

Add the taste of two New York designers whose clients, past and present, include Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani. Vintage bamboo furniture with white upholstery, blue and white Chinese porcelains, white tile floors and a framed collection of 1940's black and white sailing photos. With the key component of total privacy from passersby or neighbors, and the luxury of enough space to allow you to catch some quiet moments completely to yourself.

A two level duplex with connecting mahogany staircase, each level with it's own terrace, floor to ceiling 14 foot wide walls of glass with unmatchable views with pure white curtains pulled to the sides. From inside the apartment, you will not see anything but turquoise and sapphire blue water - as if you are sailing on an ocean liner with your own balconies. The photos tell the story.

Downstairs, a comfortable living room with an optional sleeping couch and armchair, an outdoor dining table for up to 6, a desk and bureaus. Sliding mahogany doors can separate your kitchen area to create a second bedroom. A downstairs bathroom comes complete with two-sink vanity and shower. Generous baskets filled with luxurious beach towels.. Large new flatscreen cable tv with dvd, video and all channels. A Bose dock for your ipod.

Outside on the 11 X 14 foot terrace, banquettes and chaise lounges with total privacy. No one looking down from balconies above you or up from the beach below, allows morning to midday sunbathing with total privacy. The downstairs terrace has a tropical mosquito net to allow sleeping outdoors in the moonlight if you wish to really live out your island fantasy. Outdoor breakfast/lunch tables for four. Oiled louvered tropical wood side walls add the luxury of Caribbean style. Constant cooling tradewind breezes.

Upstairs, the Master Suite at the top of the mahogany stairs is crowned with a 18 foot high cathedral ceiling. Hurricane lamps, white ceiling fan, vintage bamboo furniture, tropical wood doors, blue and white Chinese porcelains and upholstery, a black and white vintage sailing image gallery, and a huge king size bed to get lost in. Second flatscreen tv, dvd, video. Another wall of floor to ceiling glass with extraordinary views of the British Virgin Islands, St. John and the Cays, not to mention the turquoise and sapphire water of your imagination and the covers of travel magazines.

Each evening, open a great bottle of wine, tax free in the USVI, go out on the upstairs terrace to watch the sunset coloring the clouds and the moonrise over British Tortola. After dark, light the candles inside and on the terraces, turn off the lights, and sit listening to the waves below. Watch the lights glittering on the islands, the ferries going to and from Cruz Bay, the glow of the restaurants at Caneel Bay, a million stars above you. Bliss.

Everything that you could wish to do will be waiting for you each morning. Swimming on your half mile sugar white beach in turquoise water. Snorkeling on the reefs directly under your terraces. Sunning on your terrace chaises or by the magnificently sited fresh water pool. Reading in the shade of the palm trees. Wandering the docks of the marina looking at yachts and talking to the fishermen back with their day’s catch. The E building is at the quiet end of the resort, with it's own beach, and perfectly oriented views. No noise from the pool, or crowds of tourists. Ever. A true escape.

FREE snorkeling equipment and beach chairs. At the Watersports Pavilion down the beach you will find rentable kayaks, windsurfing and paddling boards. Plus scuba diving classes for low fees. At Sapphire’s Marina, literally downstairs from the E Building, are everything from Jet Skis, Parasailing, Catamaran Cruises to Jost Van Dyke and legendary White Bay with The Soggy Dollar Bar, sportfishing for marlin and whatever else you desire, Powerboat day rentals, even Day Sails on Yachts if your wallet allows.

Day trips to St John to Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Hawks Nest Beach are minutes away at the Redhook Ferry. You have no need to rent a car the week you stay with us. Everything you need is reachable by cab in Red Hook or at the Food Center. You can visit all of St Thomas’s favorite sites. The beautiful Danish colonial town of Charlotte Amalie, with its shady Royal Palm Passage offers you hours of wonderful shopping with world famous bargains in jewelry, watches and liquor. There are fantastic restaurants within 5 to 10 minutes in Red Hook, our quarter-mile-away village with shops, markets, bars, restaurants, and ferries, or on the list we provide you of our own personal picks.

Arrangements can be made for you to be met at the airport by our favorite car service, or you can grab a local cab outside the terminal to take you to Sapphire. On the way you can ask your driver to stop at Food Center or Moe's Market for supplies.

Your Caribbean Hideaway is for a couple who want a feeling of casual luxury at the beach with the traditional feel of the elegant easy going Old Caribbean. If you want quiet, privacy and space, with some style thrown in, if you don't want to cook, eat, and sleep, in the same room, then this beautiful two floor duplex is just the place to chill and to restore your spirit. We truly love kids, but this just is NOT the place for them.

NO exceptions for anyone under 18. This is a quiet, low key, casually elegant retreat for adults to savor and to unwind in.

without exception.

About Peter and Beverly Millard

My wife and I are both designers living in New York City. My family has had a home in St Thomas for over 50 years up on Crown Mountain in Caret Bay. Beverly and I fell in love with Sapphire during a visit to Saint Thomas, and took two years to locate and buy what we thought was the perfect condo. We have been renovating and improving it ever since. We can help you arrange airport pickups and drop-offs if you choose to do so. We also provide free snorkeling equipment.

Peter and Beverly Millard purchased this condo in 2006

Why Peter and Beverly Millard chose East End

We were stunned when we saw Sapphire Beach for the first time. Beverly and my daughter discovered that the 'hotel' was in fact condominiums. The search was on. We located the 4 ideal units we wanted to buy, and then waited until E-304 became available. Why did we do it? I was so tired of staying in the 'not best' rooms in hotels and resorts. I wanted to feel like I finally was staying in the Perfect Rooms with the Perfect View in The Most Beautiful Place. That is how our duplex feels to us and why we are always thrilled to return. No more envy and wishing. Just pure joy.

What makes this condo unique

The two terraces hang literally 30 feet from the waters edge, so that you feel as if you are floating on a ship in the turquoise and sapphire sea. The duplex works wonderfully with two bathrooms, no sharing or waiting to shower. With two floors, there is privacy for you whenever you want it. You can find a place to read while your partner watches tv or sleeps in...perfect to really rest and recharge. The upstairs wood ceiling is 18' high and that feels like the real Old Caribbean to us. Space, height, and privacy are the true luxuries of your Caribbean Hideaway.

Notes:
There is everything here on the East End that you would want from a Caribbean holiday, with immediate easy access to literally dozens of other islands right downstairs at the Sapphire marina or at the Red Hook ferry terminal 1/4 mile away. Watersports from windsurfing to snorkeling and sailing, deep sea fishing, lolling around on a chartered sailboat. Hiking on St John, restaurants by the dozens on St Thomas and St John. Day trips to Jost and the Baths on Virgin Gorda leave right downstairs. And then there is doing NOTHING. Free chaises for the beach and pool, lazing away hours on the shaded terraces reading, drinking smoothies and daquiries and painkillers you make at our bar. Napping and daydreaming. Sapphire is really whatever you want Sapphire to be for you.

Romantic Vacation in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Recently my husband and I celebrated milestone birthdays and our 30th Wedding Anniversary at Peter and Beverly's 'New York Designer Hideaway'. We could not have chosen a more romantic setting. When we walked into the Nautical Condo over-looking Sapphire Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in St Thomas, we knew we had found the perfect place. Everything was exactly as the pictures described and all the amenities were supplied right down to shampoo and conditioner in both bathrooms. We enjoyed cooking some meals and spending our mornings sitting on the balcony with our coffee watching the stunning sunrises. There was always something to see from the ferry's and sailboats to pelicans and sea turtles below. At night we gazed across at the sparkling lights in St John under the starry nights.

We loved every minute we spent on Sapphire Beach, complete with a Beach Bar down the way which offered lunches, snacks and even some lively entertainment some afternoons. The coral reefs were a snorkeler's paradise and if you were adventurous enough you could take a ride in the sky in a parasail. Being sailors we were delighted to be next to a small Marina where you could book day trips to see the rest of the islands, fish or sail. Our favourite day out was on 'Nightwind' with Captain Rick on his 57 foot sailing ship. It was a dream come true and one my husband will never forget.

Only 5 minutes into the town of Red Hook provided great dining, a grocery store and quaint shops to peruse. Several times we hopped the ferry over to St John where many dining and shopping experiences awaited as well as beautiful beaches to explore. Of course the trip would not have been complete without touring the lovely, historical city of Charlotte Amalie only a 15 minute taxi ride away. The beautiful cobblestoned walkways between the main streets and the large harbour where the cruise ships come in is a must see.

We are so thankful to Peter and Beverly for accepting us as guests and providing us with a vacation in Paradise with everything you could imagine to make a perfectly memorable trip.

Owner's Response: We don't normally respond to our guests reviews since they speak for themselves. But this couple from Ontario were just delightful to work with from start to finish. I know that they were concerned that the place they chose be right because their 30th anniversary meant a great deal to them. Because of that, it really delights us to hear that they loved their experience and that it was all that they had hoped for. We get a lot of honeymooners and anniversary couples, which is only fitting. Beverly and I spend our honeymoon on St Thomas 46 years ago, and it was magic then. Although on the way there, we were hijacked to Cuba and detained in a room for 17 pretty grim hours before being released to fly to Miami. But that's another story.....and one these wonderful Canadian guests clearly did not have to endure!!! We are better hosts than the Castros. LOL.

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in many different condos on Sapphire (the best beach in St. Thomas) because our son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren live there. We feel that we have now found a home away from home and will stay at this fabulous condo every trip.

There are wonderful design details, great colors and the view is amazing!

This condo was perfect for our island getaway!

  • 5 of 5

First - wow. The location of this condo couldn't be better. We were immediately taken with the jaw-dropping views from the two balconies. As stated, this unit is in Building "E" at the resort, which offers the best views of St. John and all the beautiful turquoise water between St. Thomas and St. John. Only the 3rd floor units (like this one) are bi-level and have two balconies, and Building E has it's own little beach - most of it rocky, but there is a 50' or so stretch of sand. It's a very short walk to Sapphire Beach proper, behind Buildings A-D, and what a beautiful beach it is. So the unit gets a big, fat A+ for location.

As I mentioned, it is on the 3rd floor, so you will need to lug your suitcases up a few flights of steps, and the Master bedroom is on the 4th level, so more stairs. But only once coming and going so it's over with quick. Inside, the decor is very tasteful and beachy. But the true life of this condo is lived on those glorious balconies, where we enjoyed morning coffee, and every meal that we didn't go out for. Every day we watched the graceful pelicans gliding by our balconies as they floated over the water 50' away and nose-dived for fishy snacks. It was so cool watching them!!

Getting there: We took Peter's recommendation and had Miss Brown's service meet us at the airport and take us to Food Center before going to the condo, for a total of $70. It was nice but a regular taxi will take 2 people with bags to the condo for $30, which I advise doing before going grocery shopping. The reason is that you can take stock of what's already in the pantry and fridge before you buy things like coffee, condiments, etc. There's a fair amount of stuff already there. We bought coffee and filters for instance and there was already plenty in the pantry. Also, there is a pretty good liquor collection there already, so again, take stock before you buy. I left well over half a bottle of Johnny Walker Black for someone to appreciate later on.

Having this wonderful dwelling to return to after the beach or any other excursions was magical. It is very convenient to get to the St. John ferry in Red Hook - a $4 ride per person. Taxis are very easy to get, but if you plan a lot of trips to Charlotte Amalie or the North shore, you might want to consider renting a car. The taxis do add up.

We are already looking ahead to the next time we will have an opportunity to vacation in St. Thomas, and hope Peter and Beverly will have us back!

Owner's Response: This is a wonderful review and we couldn't agree more with the description of the terraces. We do have a solution to their comment that "you will need to lug your suitcases up a few flights of steps" to the unit. There are two chair attendants from 8:00 to 6:00 for the condo beach chairs, and we will begin sending out their cell phone numbers for incoming guests who feel that they will want help with their bags. We tip them 20.00. So you can make your own decision on what you want to do based on your baggage. We are looking into the fares from the airport. We are a bit surprised at the moderate charge of 15.00 per person that this guest paid. This was a VERY helpful posting for us, and it will affect the information we send out to our guests positively. And yes, we will most certainly have them back!!!! We love our repeat renters.

Just as beautiful the second time around!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second year my husband and I spent 4 weeks at Peter and Bev's absolutely lovely condo. All the amenities you could ever think of are included. The kitchen is fully stocked with every imaginable utensil and gadget, dishware, pots, pans, and George Foreman grill (which we used frequently). The condo is identical in person as it is in the pictures posted on the website. GORGEOUS

Look for my review from last year...I think we're the only review with 4 weeks of pure bliss and relaxation.

Sapphire is just as beautiful as the Hawaiian Islands without the hustle bustle.

Peter and Beverly are lovely to work with and I consider them friends though we've never met!

Owner's Response: Thank you Trina for a second great review. Obviously, when you are back for a second four week stay, something is feeling right. Thank you for the compliments, and we too feel like you are friends at this point. There's something about sharing a beautiful experience that seems to do that. We also have had some great luck in attracting wonderful guests. One of these days, you may just find yourselves in New York, and when you do, we'll have a lot to talk about over dinner! You are ALWAYS welcome back "home". Peter and Boom

Just what the doctor ordered!

  • 5 of 5

After much research we chose this condo based on the location and great reviews. We spent 8 nights at this wonderful home and had a great time! The condo is amazing with everything and more. We found it to be very clean and well stocked with items you don't pack in your suit case. One day we wanted to pack a lunch and everything we needed was there for our excursion. The view is to die for and after looking at the other buildings we were so happy we chose this condo and building E. It has the best view of them all. Peter and Beverly did a wonderful job providing tips and suggestions to make our stay even better than expected! There is no need to look any farther, just book your stay now!!!!!

GREAT!!!!

  • 5 of 5

So our arrival date was actually 8/10/2014.... I feel TERRIBLE! Looking into vacationing again we considered returning to St. Thomas and looked at this property and realized my review wasn't here! Okay onto the review.....

My husband and I spent 7 days in St. Thomas for our honeymoon. This place was just amazing. Peter and Beverly were incredibly helpful during the entire process. Interest, booking, arriving, while in St. Thomas, etc., etc. The condo is absolutely GORGEOUS! They have it decorated so beautifully and appropriately. Walking along the beach you can kind of see into other condos and they look NOTHING like this. Peter and Beverly really have a true gem here! The balconies are absolutely stunning on both levels. Our favorite thing to do was to go snorkeling (which they provide equipment) right in front of the condo then go take a nap on the balcony.... amazing. Smitty picked us up and returned us to the airport and he was great and so helpful! The whole experience was amazing and it was so awesome to come home every night to this beautiful property. We will DEFINITELY be returning back one day and to this property... Peter and Beverly are wonderful to work with.... they made our first HomeAway experience amazing!

THANK YOU!!!!
