About Gene Corrigan
People are always interested about how our family came to own the Lake House. In 1995, the previous owners moved on and left the Lake House behind. It was for sale for two years. My husband and I had gone on our first date at the Lake House and it was always a special place for us and our children. We spent many Friday evenings there having dinner with the kids. We put in a bid on the Lake House in 1996, it was rejected. A year later, it still was empty and had been condemned by the codes. It was quickly deteriorating with leaky roofs, old windows and becoming overgrown. We decided to try again and put another bid on the property for considerably less than the year before. We were shocked when it was accepted. The building needed to be saved. It is a local landmark and we set out to remodel and restore the building. The cottage was on the property near the shore. It started out as a station for the trolley that passed in front of the Lake House in the 1800's and early 1900's. It had been moved next to the lake by a previous owner. In 2005, we applied and were granted the necessary permits to remodel and enlarge it. It is a little treasure right beside the lake. Our children have since grown, gone on to college and live in other areas of the country but enjoy coming home now with their children to the cottage where we live in the off season months of the year. It is the perfect spot to enjoy boating, water sports, fish or just watch the birds on the lake. Canadarago Lake has several pairs of nesting eagles, Canadian geese raise their young right outside our windows, there are loons, wood ducks and gulls swimming by. It is the most relaxing place I know. I have since retired from teaching Spanish in a local high school, my husband taught science for many years and then owned a lumber store which he has sold and we dedicate ourselves to running the Lake House and enjoying the lakeside living. Christine is now a second year law student at Syracuse Law School

Why Gene Corrigan chose Richfield Springs
We remodeled and enlarged the cottage by the lake at the Lake House because it had the best location on the property- right by the lake. It is relaxing, comfortable and cozy. We were able to create a lakeside getaway for ourselves from our hectic life at the Lake House. After a busy day in the restaurant, we come down the driveway to the cottage- which can't be seen from the Lake House- to a home that is quiet, peaceful and unique. It is a hidden gem on our property and a place where anyone would love to spend time.
What makes this Cottage unique
We enjoy living at the Cottage because when you are here you feel like you are a hundred miles away from civilization with all of the comforts of home at your fingertips. There is Wi-Fi so we can stay connected with family and friends, the water is just outside our door, the sunsets are breathtaking and we can hop in our car and be downtown for an ice cream cone in two minutes or to the supermarket in three minutes. It is conveniently located and yet astonishingly private and peaceful. As I write this, I am sitting at my dining room table watching the waves hit the shore, the mist is lifting on the hills across the lake and my dogs are lying on the floor beside me. It is a piece of paradise.

A great place for a baseball team party!
My son was playing baseball in Cooperstown so we rented this place for our family so that we could host a team party. This place was perfect for that. There were lots of charcoal grills on which to cook and the kids enjoyed taking out the kayaks and the paddle boats. There was also tons of space for the kids to run around and play wiffle ball and football and the grounds were clean. There is a restaurant connected to the hotel with seating areas and fire pits outside and the staff cleaned up any trash by 9 am in the morning.
As for the cottage itself, it is no frills and definitely older and not modern with a small kitchen but it is what you would expect from staying on a lake. The pictures on the website should be updated. Given the age of the property, I thought the price per night was a little higher than it should be. The cottage itself was clean though and the beds were comfortable. There are definitely a lot of bugs which is unavoidable though when near a lake. There was also an odor in the cottage which I also think is from being close to the water. We brought a candle and used it daily and that helped. There is a stage on the property with tables and lights that remain on at all times but it was not distracting in any way. The stage costs extra to use but we did not need it because there is plenty of space to use without using the stage. The only real criticism I can say about the property is that the run down boats around the property could be removed to improve the ambiance, especially when you first enter the driveway going down to the cottage. There looks like a lot of junk in that area. The owners and property manager were nice, responsive and very helpful. All in all, if you are coming to Cooperstown for baseball, this is a good location, only a 23 minute drive to the fields, and a comfortable place to stay.
Dissatisfied is an understatement
The pictures and description of this property boast a house that can hold 10 people, and is accommodating to a team party. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The house is incredibly small, very outdated and in no way well equipped for 10 people. Every grill around the property is meant for propane, but is falling apart, and only charcoal can be used. The beautiful gazebo (shown in the pictures on the HomeAway app) is FULL garbage and half consumed pop bottles...as was most of the property surrounding the home. In fact, when my children went down the rocky path to the lake, I was surprised to find metal & glass strewn about. There is a large stage immediately outside the home that I would imagine is for the team parties detailed in the misleading description, but it costs additional money and is lit up ALL NIGHT. For nearly $3000 for the week, I am BEYOND disappointed and will be sure to alert the other families on the Cooperstown groups I’m a part of to think twice before even considering this property. The driving factor of our choice to stay here was the lake, and the elements surrounding the lake made it almost unusable. I am a very disappointed guest.
Review of property
This was a family vacation for all of us. ONe of our grandsons was playing ball in Cooperstown. The pictures did not portray the property
Properly. There was junk everywhere
5 rotting boats at the dock
A rotting dock made out of plywood
The cabin was cute but dirty. I had to sweep the floors when we arrived
No pot holders in the kitchen
One roll of paper towels in the kitchen
Had to ask for garbage bags
A permanent stage on the property to the right of the cabin
A country western band playing one of the nights we were there
A trailer in back which was our view in the kitchen
The owners very nice but if you save your hard earned money for a
Private stay I would not recommend this site
However we made lemonade out of lemons
The pictures need to be refreshed. We would not have rented this VRBO had we known what it looked like
The Cottage is only 10 feet from the lake !
My family and friends had a great stay at the Lakeside Cottage. It's a great location for a large group, very accommodating and the owners are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I was surprised to find that the Lakeside Cottage is basically in the backyard of the Lake House Restaurant, a much larger Hotel that is also used as a rental property. The main attraction, in my opinion, is the gorgeous sprawl of the property on a very large lake where we saw several deer, ducks, rabbits and various birds including 2 bald eagles that nested in a tree on the shoreline. We enjoyed staying at this property. It was clean, spacious, and quiet. It was nice to have three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, one with a 4X6 foot walk in shower. The Cottage is only 10 feet from the lake and had free use of all the boats and private dock.
We consider reviews by actual guests at the Cottage to be an important part of our business because it reflects upon how well we serve our customers. We will continue to work extremely hard to please everyone who comes to our Cottage on The Lake.
What a wonderful place to spend a relaxing mini vacation! Our stay couldn't have been nicer! The property is beautiful, full of spectacular architecture that keeps you in awe of how it was accomplished! The property was very clean and breakfast is included.
Thank you for your review. I am glad the handicap ramp was of great service to you, may father was in a wheelchair for years and I know the value of a good ramp. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and you had a comfortable stay as well. We are glad you were able to enjoy the local area. Thank you for your feedback you have provided and choosing to stay with us. We hope to see you come back and stay with us again. Warmest Regards, Christine Corrigan, owner/manager of the Hotel.
"We will be back this winter!"
My family and I had a wonderful time in Richfield Springs in September 2015. Christine truly cares for this beautiful cottage property! It is very clean, peaceful and full of every amenity your family needs while away from home. The Cottage is of quality construction, beds are very comfortable, main kitchen and baths are very clean and well stocked. The lake and grounds outside the door are an added plus to this spacious Cottage.
Antique mahogany boats that can be used for renting on the lake.
