Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

This is a beautiful, custom-built log home located just outside of downtown Seward. The previous owners spent ten years building the house, and cut down and hand-peeled all the logs themselves. It's a true Alaskan work of art, and there's nothing else like it in the Seward area.

We purchased the home in 2007, and live in a small apartment over the detached garage on the property. So, we are around to help with local activities and information and make sure you get the most out of your vacation! We have two dogs that live with us and play in the yard, but are not allowed in the log home.

This house provides a very comfortable home-away-from home while you're traveling, with all the amenities. The full kitchen is there for your use, there are large common areas - a huge slate fireplace surrounded by leather couches, TV / VCR / DVD / High speed internet computer / Wi-Fi / Stereo, a grill and hot tub on the large front deck, a small covered back deck, etc. We now have a washer / dryer for guest use - all brand new in 2017! The house is modern and very clean, but cozy and comfortable. End your day relaxing in the hot tub or grilling out your fresh catch, while enjoying the view of Mt. Alice from the deck.

About Wendy Doughty

We've lived in Seward since 2002, and absolutely love the area and the people! We owned and operated Kayak Adventures Worldwide through the summer 2014 season, and during those years Bear Paw Lodge was run as a B & B. It was a great lodging option for our clients, and others traveling to the area. Now that we've transitioned away from running Kayak Adventures, we've turned our log home into a vacation rental.

One of our favorite parts of traveling is meeting all the wonderful people. By living on the property and running the lodge, we're able to bring that aspect of travel right to our own back yard! It's such a pleasure to meet the people who stay here, and to assist them in maximizing their time in Seward.

We love the outdoors... and whenever we're not working on projects around the house, you can find us hiking, biking, running, fishing, kayaking, or even strumming our instruments around a campfire. Life is good in Seward, and we hope to share that with you!!

Wendy Doughty purchased this house in 2007

Why Wendy Doughty chose Kenai Peninsula

We were both originally drawn to Seward for the kayaking and the lifestyle. Landing at Kayak Adventures in 2002, we quickly realized how much we loved sharing this backyard with others. That winter we purchased the business, and decided to make Seward our home. We lived in the tiny kayak shop for five summers... sharing the space with many guides, customers, dogs, etc. In 2007, we decided it was time to find our own space. And so we found this log home! It needed lots of work, but was well-built and spoke to us immediately. In June 2007, we moved in and began running it as a B & B.

What makes this house unique

Come stay at the lodge, and in an instant you'll know why we purchased this log home. The quality and beauty of construction, the feeling of warmth and home, the space and light, the deck and hot tub, the location... the list goes on and on. We knew this was the property for us the minute we walked through the door in 2007. We bought the house with the intention of sharing it with others, and it's truly perfect for traveling groups.

My husband and I have nothing but the highest of praise for Bear Paw Lodge, and for Wendy. From our first communications with her, to follow up communications, further notes being received just prior to arrival, thence to our arrival at the home, and everything thereafter, we give her a 10/10!! She popped over to say hello and was so welcoming. Aside from her friendliness and professionalism, the home is gorgeous. Spacious, well cared for, extremely clean and hygienic, excellent laundry facilities, ample bathroom space, amenities (towels, bathroom sundries, teas, coffee etc), the hot tub, parking areas = EVERYTHING was absolutely ideal, and made our taper time and race preparation so much easier! Thank you Wendy, we loved Bear Paw Lodge (and the doggies too!!)

Owner's Response: Hey Fiona! It was so wonderful to have you all here, getting ready for the big race! We're glad you enjoyed your stay, and found the accommodations suitable for your needs while in town. And it's great to hear that our new laundry facilities worked well for you all!! I think that's been a great addition to the lodge this year. We hope we'll see you all again in the future, and again - it was a treat having you all here. Many thanks, Wendy & Dave

Beautiful, Clean Cabin

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived at Bear Paw Lodge the owner was there to ensure we could get into the lodge and to meet us. We were also met by a Bald Eagle soaring above the lodge. The place is really like out of a picture book. It is super clean and roomy with all the amenities you will need. The owner was very accommodating and made sure we had an excellent stay in Seward both before and during our stay. You need to stay here!

Great Place

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at several VBRO places in several countries, but the two places I found in my home state of Alaska out-shined them all! This has to be one of the cleanest places I have ever stayed. It was perfect. Everything was perfect, well except the rain but no one can control that. One of the best virtues of this place though was the owner Wendy. She was great! I had a very hard time staying organized with a wedding and reunion all in one, so she had to e-mail things over and over because I kept loosing documents. She was very gracious, never complained, and was never rude. Cannot recommend this place enough!

An excellent location for a family stay. We had six adults and four children in our gathering

  • 5 of 5

This is a top notch property located just outside of Seward. Well located to get to Exit glacier and town. A quiet surrounding. It was clean and well maintained. The flow and layout worked well for gatherings. A large kitchen with attached dining area. There was one large bedroom upstairs with three large beds. The other three normal size bedrooms were on the main floor. It was nice having the TV upper area separate from the lower living room fireplace area allowing space to spread out. The three bathrooms were handy. Wendy and Dave were gracious hosts. We stayed for five nights June 10-15 2017. The chocolate chip cookies on the table were a nice touch when we arrived.
