Step back in time in this 600 sq. ft. charming Carriage House where the chauffeur used to live in the 1940s. The structure has been completely remodeled. It is secluded and very private with beautiful views all around. The bedroom has a double bed that can sleep one couple. The furnishings have been specifically chosen to give the ambience of a shabby-chic-style cottage.
The French antique daybed in the living room doubles as a bed that can sleep a single person. The full service kitchen is designed to allow guests to cook meals at home. The bathroom has a claw-foot tub and shower reminiscent of days gone by. This is truly a home away from home.
The Carriage House is part of a larger historic farm with several out buildings. Secluded but still within 1/2 hour from a major metropolitan airport, Washington Dulles. It is close to the village of Waterford, VA, a National Historic Trust treasure. Towns such as Harpers' Ferry MD, Middleburg VA ,Shepherd's Town MD, Winchester VA and The Plains, VA are all easy day trips.
There are quite a few really good restaurants within driving distance for those not inclined to cook.
My husband and I are Software Engineers who love the country side. We have 2 children who enjoy the freedom of running around outside and exploring nature. We love music, traveling, flying and the outdoors.
The Owner purchased this house in 2002
By living at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains we can enjoy the beauty of the rolling hills and valleys while still being close the larger Metropolitan area of Washington D.C. with all its cultural richness. We also live close to the historic town of Waterford, VA which is one of the few villages designated as a National Historic Trust in its entirety. The carriage house is part of historic Waverley farm built in the late 1700's.
This is perfect weekend getaway from Washington DC. Enjoy the several unique wineries that have cropped up in the area. Hike, Fish and bike on the nature trails and rivers close by. Licensed hunters can hunt deer and fowl. Or just stay on the farm and enjoy the gardens and the pool and vegetable garden in the summer. Pick your own raspberries and blackberries in the summer and fall.
The experience with this property was disappointing and a bit strange at times. We rented the carriage house on the farm of the owner to attend a wedding. We were attracted by the pool that was advertised and the option to roam around the property with our young daughter. Unfortunately, we found the owner fairly unresponsive to several issues. First, I realized that she had set up two bookings under my name; one on which I had paid a deposit and one which I had not. When it came time to pay the remainder on the first deposit, I inquired about what was going on with the second booking, as I was also getting automatic reminders about it. After emails went unanswered over several days, I had to call to get her to address and resolve the double booking. Second, I requested more pictures and descriptions of the property by email, which she never provided. When I called about the double booking, I asked again for more details on the pool. She confirmed it would be available, and we indicated we intended to use it. She also told us she would be present when we arrived to check in. Both points turned out to be nonsense.
When we arrived, we found a barking, unleashed dog no one had mentioned. After calming the dog and doing a bit of walking around, I managed to find the pre-teen daughter of the owner, who was not home. The daughter tried to be helpful and suggested we go directly to the carriage house. She called her mom, who indicated the keys were in the carriage house. The keys were not where we were told they would be. When the owner finally arrived, she provided us with a set of keys that did not work. She said she would find the correct ones. She never did. It's pretty shabby to provide guests no way to lock their room, even in the country.
As we were getting settled in, we decided to walk over to the pool. It was filthy. with months-old leaves at the bottom and moss growing on the bottom. When we noted this to the owner, her response was, "yeah the kids were supposed to clean it this week" but they did not get around to it. She said they would clean it the following day. They did not. I asked her to take something off for the unusable pool. She never responded.
Otherwise, the space is functional, except the day bed. The mattress badly sags, and the bed is too small for even a small adult. It was also useless for a small child who might roll out of it.
Overall we got the impression the owner could not care less. Consider staying elsewhere.
Lovely cottage that is situated in a beautiful setting on a lifestyle farm near Leesburg. Less than an hour away from DC and near to several wineries, some quite good. The owner is friendly, accommodating and approachable. When she learned that we wanted to do an outdoor barbecue, she organized that we could do it. We will visit again. Although it is advertised for three people, it is best for two people, and a younger third person as the third bed is a bit short. We had dinner at a recommended pizza restaurant nearby which was great fun and good quality. Wears visited several wineries in the area of which Doukenie and Hiddencroft was the best.
