1830 Elijah Haven Homeplace is a very special, private and unique New England country place. Numerous travelers over the past 7 years have said that it's unlike any other.
—Exploring Nature, Hiking & Adventuring
—Unplugging, Retreating & Decompressing
—Family Together Time

—Creativity & Inspiration (writing, painting, movement...)
Haven is truly that for most people — a haven. A much-needed quality-of-life place to take a break from the stresses of everyday life.
We offer Guests the opportunity to feel completely at home in a beautiful, clean, fully-updated, totally-turnkey Gentleman's Farm on many peaceful acres. Haven's near Cushing Academy, Wachusett Mountain and many other attractions in the hill & lake town of Ashburnham just beyond the suburbs.
Enjoy the Herb Cutting Garden just outside the kitchen door. BBQ and dine on the patio/deck. Immerse yourself in the nature and spirit of rolling lawns, gardens, fields, ancient stone walls, forests, walking trails, hills and many lakes. In-season, numerous Adirondack Chairs (10 at last count) on the lawns and in the fields help you breathe it all in — retreat, relax and decompress.
Very private. Convenient. Haven is situated on a secluded hillock – perfect for people who value a bit of seclusion, scenic surroundings and making wonderful memories. (Haven is our home – which we vacate whenever guests are in residence. When you're a Guest at Haven, it is yours alone.)
The property is has easy highway access from Boston and New York. Airports (Worcester and Manchester) are less than an hour away.
Includes in-person Meet & Greet Orientation, Weekly Cleanings, Central AC, Xfinity BlastPlus High Speed Wi-Fi, Groundskeeping and lots more.
Wide pine floors, a center chimney in the living room and lots of windows & skylights make this a light, bright and cheerful place to call your home.
A renovated barn, carriage house and artist studio are also on the property, as well as over 6 acres of lawns...and gardens that begin blooming in mid-May and don't stop until Fall Foliage season.
Please read the comments and compliments from other guests, then plan your stay and experience this special place for yourself. We'll help you in any way we're able.
We acquired Elijah Haven Homeplace in December of 1990 from the descendants of the Haven family. Scott was a successful model, commercial actor and 66 WNNNBC radio personality in New York City, and discovered this special place on a visit to the area. He jumped at the chance to own this little slice of heaven, left the Manhattan life — and the rest is history.
Initially, there was not much here except potential. But slowly, together with Irma Hayward, the spunky lady who sold us the farm (it had been in her family since 1830), we pushed back the forests to reveal the old fields and the requisite New England stone walls.
In those early years here, the Haven family provided us with early 1900s photos of the farm – and we set out restoring the place to its original look (with modern updates like central air conditioning and underground utilities).
Several years ago, we began to travel...and while we were away, we hosted a family from Cushing Academy for hockey tournament week. They were wonderful — and Haven made them so happy. It's then that we got 'the bug' to host travelers from around the world whenever we weren't in town.
Today, when guests are in residence at the farm, we live at an adjacent property. Either we or our caretaker are always available to meet, orient, answer questions and assist in making your stay a memorable and comfortable one.
Guests say that we are very detail-oriented, clean...and have terrific taste! And we do enjoy meeting people who come our way.
John Rahaim & Scott Bingham purchased this farmhouse in 1990
Although we now travel the world, Ashburnham is our hometown. Haven Homeplace didn't start out as a Guest Rental. We made a dream come true for ourselves by renovating and 'TLC-ing' the farm and living there. The Haven family member that sold the farm to us actually participated in and applauded the restoration.
Although we have explored the world from Boca to Bali, there is something special here that we now enjoy sharing with others.
It is just down the road from the world-famous college prep school, Cushing Academy. Notables such as the King of Bhutan, Nate Berkus, actress Bette Davis and others have graduated from its ivy clad tower.
We did not choose Haven Homeplace. It chose us. Where else could you see turkey and deer grazing on a verdant green lawn close by in the morning...and be shopping on glamorous Newbury Street in Boston that same afternoon?!
We're located in what we call 'The Heart of New England' in North Central MA near the cities of Gardner, Fitchburg & Leominster. It's just NW of Greater Boston in the beautiful rolling hills and lakes just beyond the coastal plain. Hike to the local hilltops and see the Boston skyline!
Also nearby are The Winchendon School, Franklin Pierce University, Mt Wachusett Community College, the cities of Gardner, Fitchburg, Leominster, Devens, Westminster, Ashby, Princeton, Wachusett Mt., Mount Monadnock and arts mecca Peterborough.
Peace. Charm. Nature. Renewal. Comfort. Quiet. "A Spiritual, Healing Vibe."
I rent a lot of homes through Home Away and similar sites and this is the first one that was even better than the pictures. A beautiful and quaint home on a gorgeous property. Perfect size for me and my two 72 year old parents. John was welcoming and spent time with us to show us around the property. It was a great experience and I would rent again.
Even before our arrival, we were pleased with the attention to detail and communications. Once we did arrive, it was even more than we expected, with many thoughtful touches to help get us settled. A great big thank you to John for connecting with us before and greeting us when we arrived.
The property is beautiful and we took advantage of the various Adirondack chairs to enjoy the many views. The home itself was very clean and comfortable, and there was nothing missing. This is an amazing place to disconnect and relax, with some nearby towns handy for groceries and browsing.
If your goal is to get away, relax, and enjoy the beautiful area - then I unreservedly recommend Elijah Haven Homeplace.
Thank you John and Scott.
The grounds at Haven Home were meticulously and beautifully landscaped, and were perfect for an evening stroll. The home was spotless, and very comfortable. Our Aussie enjoyed it as much as we did, starting every day with a walk through the yard. Scott and John's library included a wide variety of books in case the rain kept us inside. We felt it was a real treat to find our breakfast ingredients already in the refrigerator, and cooking on the 1948 stove was a step back in time. We highly recommend Haven Home to anyone...the location is perfect for so many activities. We are planning to return next spring. Thanks John and Scott for letting us share your wonderful home.
What a wonderful vacation our family had at Haven. We got a deep sense of the history of the property and community and think that John and Scott have done a beautiful job of bringing history to life here. We had everything we needed for the week, and were pleasantly surprised to find the fridge stocked with breakfast items for us when we arrived late our first night. The beds were very comfortable, the bathroom beautifully updated. We enjoyed hiking in the surrounding woods and watching the birds using the nesting houses on the property. We went skiing at Wachusett Mountain for a couple of days, and fly fishing the Nissitissit River with Charlie from the Evening Sun Fly Shop in Pepperell. We loved our visit to Cushing Academy, just a short drive from Haven. We hope to return again some day. It would be amazing to see the landscape run the gamut of the seasons. Haven is clearly a labor of love for John and Scott and we are thankful they offer their masterpiece for others to enjoy.
Incredible home and property with fantastic hosts. John and Scott provided breakfast fixins due to our late arrival and walked us thru orientation early the next morning. The landscape is covered with beautiful flowers, birds of several varieties and hummingbirds... We walked with the turkeys and enjoyed watching a porcupine where we picked blueberries. We had coffee outside each morning and family up for BBQ and later lobster on the grill. Their photos are spot on and you'll find yourself just walking the grounds to soak it all in. The property is for sale and only hope any new owners continue to care for it as lovingly as John and Scott do. Great jumping off point to NH, South to Sturbridge and we headed over to Glouscester to explore as well. Surrounding towns are quaint and full of organic items and more. We found sleeping upstairs in bedrooms and loft great and love all their treasures. We had my daughter and granddaughter (6) and Mom-n-law with us and found the home just right for all of us ...beautiful memories.
The ambiance was truly magical, the decor was a perfect blend of old world charm, comfort, cleanliness and the best of modern convenience. From the pristine emerald rolling hills, wild turkeys, deer and the flowers in bloom everywhere, we were continually in awe. Take your camera on your walks to capture precious moments that you will always treasure! The kitchen was well stocked and beautiful, and the cozy loft was also a perfect place to meditate, to write, read and relax! We definitely plan to return again.
