About the property

Villa Las Ballenas Has 5 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms, a Fabulous Pool.open Floor Plan.

After entering the gated property, a long driveway lined with tropical flowers and fruit trees takes you to the caretaker's home. The housekeeper keeps fresh flower arrangements on the tables and guests are encouraged to help themselves to the papayas, bananas, limes, etc. Just past the caretaker's home, you spot the ocean and the beautiful Spanish style villa, which has been designed to make good use of the natural cooling affect of the ocean breeze. From the front door, you see through the villa to the swimming pool, and beyond to the ocean, gazebo and barbeque area.

There is an enormous master bedroom with an ocean view and large French doors which open to the pool. There are three more modestly sized bedrooms that share the two additional full baths and an annex off the garage has 2 twin beds and a full bath, too.

The large, well-equipped kitchen opens to a dining room with a table for 8. Just outside the dining room, near the pool, there is another table (with an umbrella) which seats 8 or more. Additional seating under the gazebo near the barbeque area also seats 8 or more. From the thatch roofed gazebo, you can watch whales, cruise ships, and fishing and sailboats. There is a spacious indoor living area adjacent to the dining room.

Wonderful Family Time!

  • 5 of 5

Such a lovely place! The villa has a wonderful main living area that is open to the pool and the fabulous view beyond, set off by the cliffside gazebo. I took many sunrise photos from that area, the peace and the quiet was a great way to start the day along with my coffee and the thundering surf. The family enjoyed the pool - and so did the dragonflies in the morning…

The bedroom wings are air conditioned and suited our family of six – 3 bathrooms! The caretakers are a dear sweet couple that really take care of you and it’s fun to have the dogs join in on the activities. Cindy, the manager will be totally on top of things.

The little village of Las Galeras has many restaurants, amenities, and the nearby beaches are great places to wile the day away. Be sure to go to Playa Rincon to experience the culture and “food court” of fabulous local beach cuisine.

My favorite experience was on top of a mountain, 20 minutes away (inc. 4-wheeler access) - the El Monte Azul Restaurant. The owners are Pierre and Venina; the view is almost 360 degrees, and the French/Thai cuisine was amazing. We were off season and the only customers - the owners joined us for lovely evening of soft breezes, sunset thunder and lightning in the background, children playing together, and a beautiful cicada...

A truly wonderful extended stay!!!!!!

Tropical Paradise!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I highly recommend this vacation villa – it has all the comforts of home!

The property was beautiful clean and amazing, together with being very safe and well maintained. It was very comfortable with all the amenities needed for a relaxing DR retreat.

The home is professionally managed, secure, and very well appointed. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to prepare meals. It’s conveniently located and the view is breathtaking!

If you need anything, both the caretaker and the property manager are very prompt and helpful.

Overall…a great place to stay! I will definitely stay here again.

Revisited this tropical paradise with my family

  • 5 of 5

This was my second visit to this tranquil tropical paradise. I visited once before with several of my family members. This trip I was with my sister, brother and parent. We absolutely loved the quiet setting with palm trees, ocean breezes, shoreline vistas and the towering palm tree. This private villa, with large pool and surrounding acreage, offer the ultimate in privacy, seclusion and tranquility. The on site staff, Geronimo and Nana and their lovely 2 year old daughter Anna Lee , are there 24/7 to provide any help to meet your expectations. Nana also cooked a wonderful locally caught fish dinner for our family. Also ,our property manager Cindy, was there offering advice and arrangements when requested. She was terrific. We had other guests join our group. They too were very impressed with the accommodations and setting. The location of the villa puts you within minutes of the small fishing village of Las Galeras and the local beaches. The beaches are impressive i.e Playa Rincon. In the other direction (20 minutes) is the city of Samana, known for its whale watching tours. The area offers many local interests and small intimate restaurants. We will return again soon.

2015- held at gunpoint inside the villa

  • 1 of 5

If you want to be safe during your vacation then I don't recommend you this villa. We rented the Ballenas Villa in las Galeras away from the city thinking that it was safe from June 22 thru June 27 to have a relax vacation with my family but the night before our departure around 9pm we got rob by two gunmen inside the house. We were having dinner with my young kids(5 young kids and 2 mothers and 1 husband), my wife and another family when these armed guys went inside the house and grab the kids by gunpoint and puts us all inside a room. We were defenseless and scare. They took money and valuables and marked our family for live with this horrible experience.

We called Cindy the next day to provide us with at least a day of the rent, in order for my family to move away from the Galeras and she refused to give us any money and neither she show up at the place to support us. We left the place as soon the sun came up. I'm not sharing the entire experience here but we just wanted to make the renters aware of the situation so you guys don't go thru the same thing or even worst.

WE'LL NOT RENT AGAIN FROM CINDY EVER AGAIN.

The place is beatiful and we were planning to come back but not after this problem. If you're looking to rent a villa, make sure that it has its own arm guards and don't rely on dogs either.

Owner's Response: This incident is completely unsubstantiated. The guests did not report this "alleged incident" to the on-site security/caretaker, until the next morning after spending the night in the villa. The on site security lives in a home 150 feet from the villa and was home during the time of the alleged incident. The villa is gated at the street and again at the entrance to the villa and that gate can only be opened by security. No such entry was made by anyone during this time. When asked by the caretaker, the next morning, if they wanted to report the incident to the police they declined. Cindy , the property manager, did report this to the police, when made aware of it, by the caretaker. Repeated attempts were made by Cindy to contact the guests. She left her contact information via e-mail and phone and was never called back or emailed. According to the caretaker, the guests wanted to be "compensated 8,000 pesos" for the alleged incident. This demand was made on the day they were scheduled to leave at the end of their stay. I believe the whole incident was fabricated to extract a partial refund from the property manager. Cindy has been given glowing reviews from the many other guests and has always been very responsive to the needs of the guests. It seems very odd that these so called "victims" made no attempt to contact Cindy the night of the incident. Future guests should completely disregard this review. It is completely invalidated. Feel free to contact Cindy or me directly if you have any concerns or questions. PS. Does it seem reasonable that 2 gunmen would confront 2 families, with perhaps 15 or more people, no one leaves, calls the police, or reports anything taken, then spends the night there.

Incredible View

The property was lovely, and the view remarkable! The grounds, pool, and whale watch perch surpassed our expectations. The house was clean and nice, with the occasional issue. Nana and Geronimo were wonderful.

Car: recommended

Visit and you'll understand why Las Galeras and the Samana Peninsula attract so many international travelers. The area offers miles of often deserted beaches including famous Playa Rincon, which can be reached by car, boat, horse or on foot. Both ends of the 6 km white sand beach have restaurants and one end boasts a fresh water creek, perfect for rinsing the salt off. Fronton Beach, accessible by boat or on foot, is a favorite with technical climbers. Go by boat and your captain can arrange for someone to catch and cook you fresh fish, right on the beach. Madama Beach is one of the cutest beaches ever and is usually deserted. Arrive by horse, boat, or walk from town in about 1 ½ hours. El Valle Beach, off the beaten path, has 2 restaurants which specialize in, guess what, fish. “The longest zip-line in the Caribbean” is nearby, and ends at sweet little Lulu waterfall, where you’ll find tree houses for rent. Quiet Colorada Beach is a nice spot to hike to with a picnic and Rincon Beach is only another 15 minutes away on foot. Boats from Las Galeras can also drop you off and pick you up when you’re ready. La Playita is a few minutes’ walk from Las Galeras and gets busier every year, but the protected beach is kid-friendly and has 2 restaurants. You can get a reasonably priced massage right on the beach, snorkel, play volleyball, or rent a chaise lounge and do nada. The main beach, at the end of the road in town, has a cooperative, thatch-roofed restaurant run by 15 local women who take turns cooking and miraculously manage to cooperate most of the time. This is also the spot to rent a boat and captain.

Several scenic horseback riding trails take you through colorful gardens and villages on your way to a beach or whale watching lookout. Or arrange to camp on the beach overnight.

Several companies offer snorkeling, scuba diving excursions and certification. Las Galeras is a fishing village and the locals will happily take you out to fish for capitan, dorado, and other things I know nothing about :-)

The Samana Peninsula is considered one of the top 10 destinations in the world to watch humpback whales and Las Galeras is super busy for the months the whales are here breeding and giving birth, Dec. through March, which is pretty much the only time Las Galeras has anything resembling a night life. Bachata, merengue and salsa from the 2 discothèques doesn’t stop until the wee hours and most Dominicans are terrific dancers so even those in your group who don’t dance will enjoy themselves. Those who do like to dance will have no shortage of willing and eager partners.

Though there’s no organized system of biking trails, there are plenty of places to ride, both off and on paved roads. There are also ATV’s and motorcycles for rent locally.

I recently went to El Limon waterfall for the first time and I’ve lived here for 10 years. Even though we’d had several months of drought, the amount of water flowing over the falls was impressive. Next time I go, I won’t go on Easter Sunday though. It was packed. For less than $30 we got horses (I think they were really donkeys, but that’s okay ‘cause it’s not so far to fall), guides and a “typical” lunch. You can go on foot, too, but know though that even if you go on donkeyback, the last half mile is STEEP. Not bad on the way down, but if Uncle Albert smokes 2 packs a day and weighs 200 kilos, you might want to leave him at the stable and take lots of photos.

Las Terrenas is just past the waterfall so if you get an early start you’ll have time to explore the beaches there, grocery shop at a supermarket, check out some really nice gift and jewelry shops, and/or have dinner.

Los Haitises National Park can be an interesting day trip. As can Cayo Levantado, aka Bacardi Island-because Bacardi Rum once filmed an ad there.

For such a small, sleepy village, Las Galeras has an impressive variety of restaurants, though during low season many of the European owners close up shop and go to France, Italy or Germany to drink good beer and wine and gorge on fine cheeses and hearty breads so you may, especially at lunch, find yourself eating the bandera-the flag-which is what Dominicans call their “typical” lunch of white rice, red or black beans and chicken, beef or pork. Try the eggplant. Even if you don't like eggplant

Great news! We got a bank a few years ago, and sometimes the ATM machine works. We’ve also got a few simple grocery stores, a decent pharmacy, and a nice gift shop whose name I can’t remember right now. Ask for Fany. She has some beautiful things you won’t see in any other shops around.
