Description

Northwest Ithaca House Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6 (additional guests up to 10 extra chg)

Just minutes from downtown on the west shore of Lake Cayuga, this property has spectacular lake vistas and over 150 feet of EASILY ACCESSIBLE lake frontage. 1.4 acres of woods and majestic hemlock trees frame a cottage originally built in the mid 1800's by a mayor of Ithaca and then lived in in the summers by his daughter, Belle, until 1922--one of Ithaca's original lakefront homes. The property is our home but when we are away, we like to share the beautiful view and rustic lodge-like home for small gatherings of friends and families. Due to the ecologically sensitive location, we don't usually rent to groups larger than 8-10.

The paved S-curved driveway leads through the woods down the hill to a large parking area with turnaround. There is one flight of stairs to the kitchen entrance but bedrooms can be accessed from the driveway level.

The 2200 sf of living space includes kitchen with stainless appliances, bathroom, and open living/dining room along with a side room that can be used as a fifth bedroom; stone fireplace in living room has charming arts-and-craftsy 'inglenook';

4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms as well as a screened porch are on the second floor. Two bedrooms have queensize beds; two have a fullsize bed. Additional living space in the walk-out basement level features a 5- 6-person sauna with a great view.

Lakefront includes gently sloping shale beach areas, grassy areas, fire pit, dock, and boathouse.

Activities and Attractions : The Finger Lakes is renowned for its wineries and breathtaking gorges. Ithaca is a mecca of arts, science, film activities, artisan farming, world famous restaurants, etc. Ithaca's Farmers Market is rated one of the best in the country. However, alot of folks don't even want to leave the property, since the peace of the surrounding majestic hemlocks and the mesmerizing panoramic lake view, along with swimming, kayaking, and just gazing at the ever-changing water is the best--an oasis of peace and beauty --yet so close to all the percs of civilization! 'Magical' is the word most frequently used by visitors to describe the setting.

In addition, there is a small, 2-bedroom cabin on the upper part of the property completely private from the main house that is available at Homeaway listing # 268870.

About sally mennen

We are a retired couple who travel alot and like to share our home on Lake Cayuga in Ithaca with folks who want some quiet time by the lake in a magical setting.

sally mennen purchased this house in 2003

Why sally mennen chose New York

Our son was in law school at Cornell when we were looking for lakefront property, and he suggested we look here. The majestic trees and wide expanse of water as well as the long history of the cozy, rustic cottage, really charmed us.

What makes this house unique

Private, scenic lake frontage but SO close to all the Ithaca offerings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a treat to spend a week in your wonderful lake home. We felt we were staying with friends in their country house. The birds were amazing: osprey, terns, kingfisher, waxwings and of course, the mama duck with her seven very young duckings.

Thanks again for your hospitality. You have thought of everything to make one's stay a delight.

Beautiful setting with Amazing Lake View

  • 5 of 5

I would highly recommend this property. The location is perfect and setting are perfect......5 mins to downtown Ithaca and great lake access for any kind of water activity. We rented with a party of 6 for a weekend in October and the Fall colors on the lake were spectacular! Can only imagine how beautiful it must be during the summer! Owners have thought of every detail to make the stay very easy. House can accommodate a large party or family very comfortably too. We can't wait to come back for an extended stay!

Beautiful Property and Unique Well-Equipped Home

  • 5 of 5

This lovely home was the perfect spot for my family and close friends to stay while celebrating our daughter's wedding. Our stay coincided with the Harvest Moon which magically lit up the sky and was reflected in Cayuga Lake. The views could be enjoyed either down on the beach and dock, or on the decks, or in the house which has many large windows. The house is beautifully decorated with many interesting features. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a large gas grill on the deck. It was a very comfortable house.

The house is an quick drive into Ithaca. Our friends explored the downtown, Universities, waterfalls and Farmer's Market while we were busy with wedding prep.

I would recommend this property to my friends with the warning that the driveways and paths are steep. This is a function of the beautiful lakeside location. There are three possible parking locations; off the main road, about half-way down, and by the house. These areas and the paths are well maintained and lit but could be a challenge to some people.

I would love to stay there again!

Gorgeous, quiet and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

When I'm retired, I want to have a place just like this - spacious, quiet and rustic.

The owners were gracious and very responsive via phone or text with any questions we had about the property. The facilities were well maintained and up to date; signs were left in various spots to answer questions we might have about waste disposal or where to place towels.

I would definitely recommend this to any family who is looking for a place to stay near Ithaca (less than 10 minutes away!) who enjoys both nature and the option to have WiFi.

One minor suggestions: Adding air conditioning to the main house.

Eight of us who haven't seen each other for a long time had such a great time together. Think we used all the amentities, and the settings were fantastic for all kinds of activities & conversations.

What a view!

  • 5 of 5

It was such a great pleasure waking up to that stunning lake view. The house is large and full of charm. My friends of 40 years and I were there for a wedding and for some much needed R&R. We chose the right place. Beats staying in a hotel hands down!
