The one or two bedroom Island Orchid Cottage on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands has everything you need to have a great vacation without a high cost. It is perfect for the family or a couple. The cottage or artist house is nestled in a Tropical forest by the National Park off of a country road that leads to great hikes and views of the Caribbean sea.
The owners, who have been on St. John for 30 years, live nearby and enjoy growing their own food like bananas, papaya, passion fruit and orchids.
This island home has three unique island style pods that are joined by covered decks. This allows privacy for the separate bedrooms; a private bathroom with hot water shower, etc., is in the center. The dining area and kitchen are off to one side.
The cottage is an oasis away from the busy world. It offers a lot of serenity. It is perfect after a long day at the beach or hiking to come home to this ideal spot. Everyone that has stayed here was delighted that they found this comfortable treasure in the middle of the most beautiful island in the Caribbean.
Bordeaux Mountain, where the cottage is located, features pleasant breezes and temperatures usually about 75 degrees year round. The cottage is surrounded with interesting Tropical trees and plants.
The Main bedroom has a Bali island theme. It has three windows, one of which is a large skylight, and a delightful four poster hand carved king size Balinese bed. Orchids are everywhere in the tall curtains and on the bedspread.
Every room is uniquely decorated with Balinese furniture that the owners brought back from one of their excursions, along with unique St John creations. You can snuggle up on the extra comfortable Queen futon couch or chairs and catch a movie after a long day at the beach. A large mahogany desk for business or internet action is in this room along with a lot of closet space. This spacious room has a large TV, games, books, and an Ipod player/charger.
The bathroom is secluded and allows you to enjoy the wooded area view in its private location. It can be considered an outdoor shower but screened in so that critters have their space outside.
The dining area and kitchen is surrounded by forest-gardens so when you are cooking you can see the red hibiscus or cedar trees. The dining table is in the center and is a great meeting spot to check out the hummingbirds feasting on orchid nectar. It is the spot for planning the Island fun. Island paintings are hanging everywhere to capture your imagination.
A short raised deck takes you to another bedroom that has two twin beds (convertible to a king), a mahogany chest, hanging closet, large TV, and DVD. Adjoining this is a bathroom that has a hot rainwater shower overlooking the lush tropical forest canopy.
Island Orchid Cottage is located mid island above the most beautiful beaches that are only 6-8 minutes away. It is also a scenic 12 minute ride to either the town of Coral Bay or Cruz Bay for duty free shopping and a range of inexpensive to gourmet restaurants.
Starting from Cruz Bay, drive along Route 10 to Bordeaux Mountain which is the highest peak at about 1000'. There are awesome views of the ocean and other islands. Beware of donkeys in the road!
Travel for 5 minutes on Bordeaux Mountain Road until you reach a country lane on the left: go 200 ft and park on the left. Breathe the fresh forest and sea air.
Your cottage will be a short distance away along an easy flowing path through ancient Bay Rum and Tyre Palm trees. Many island birds make this area their home. You may see parrots, red tail hawks, hummingbirds, banana quits and cuckoos.
Jay and Viki will be happy to help you out with all of your vacation needs. If you do not hear from them in 24 hours please give them a call. (The INTERNET is occasionally cantankerous.) Call 340 642 2424 or 340 227 9397.

The owners of Island Orchid Cottage are fine art painters and have lived on St. John for over 30 years. We love this island and are raising our daughter here. St. John is what we were always looking for. We are happy to be here because of the beauty you see everywhere you look. There is the crystal clear ocean, that heals every pain you can imagine. Lots of turtles, colorful fish, squid, whales and dolphin. You will see adorable donkeys, geckos, hummingbirds, and beautiful flowers. We have owned the Colombo Café since 1988 and it has become a popular meeting spot on St. John. We have sailed to all the islands and this is the best!
Viki and Jay purchased this house in 2002
The property is in a central location close to the best beaches and the shopping in Coral Bay or Cruz Bay. It offers a relaxing canopy of tropical trees and flowers in the forest situated on the highest peak. We get the cool easterly breezes in the summer and are shaded by the largest trees on the island. It is a picturesque cottage nestled in the woods that allows you to commune with nature without intrusions. It offers an inexpensive base to be able to visit 10 of the best beaches and some are a few minutes away.
It is a quiet atmosphere that is home to a variety of birds and flowers. It is also an artist residence. The homeowners are artists and display their work at the cottage and at the Colombo Cafe'. Hiking on Bordeaux mountain is a joy, there are mammoth trees everywhere. The views near the cottage, look down into Coral Bay and the British Virgin Islands. You can see the islands Tortola, Peter, Norman (Treasure Island), and Virgin Gorda. An Island ferry can take you there for about $30 in an hour.
Thank you so much. We have loved staying in your cottage and hopefuylly will stay again when it is just the 2 of us.
Very peaceful and comfortable. Eleanor and Clive Bole Maidstone, UK. April 2010
The hosts were excellent, couldn't have done a better job at communicating with us, answering text messages while en-route and during arrival, replacing little things to keep us happy that we ran out of, and just generally being great hosts. We stayed here for a week with our two older children (8 and 5), and used the home as a place to sleep and eat breakfast in, during the day we were snorkeling for 3-5 hours and enjoying the beaches and adventure of St. John. We were expecting the temperature to be lower in the mountains as per the explanation and description of the property, unfortunately we found the opposite to be true. It was very warm, but more importantly the humidity was oppressive, sleep was a bit of a challenge, and the wetsuits never dried during the late afternoons, evenings and over night, which was a bummer. All things considered this is a wonderful place to stay and you can't beat the price for a 2 bedroom place on the island. It's probably better to stay there in the spring time for a temperature decrease, staying there in July really is quite hot (mid 80's and very high humidity). Of course, there is a good chance I'm just a big softy, I am a European after all :)
Last but not least our son Jack couldn't have been more thankful for the abundant supply of little geckos in and around the property. Challenging to catch, they provided hours of entertainment for him on a daily basis!
Thank you for opening your home to us!
We loved being off the beaten path at this cabin! The drive from the main road does take a bit but it is worth the peace and quiet. You are still very close to many beaches and things to do (it is a small island after all) and we were quite comfortable. We had my mother-in-law with us; she stayed in the smaller cabin, my wife and I shared the big cabin. We all shared the one bathroom and kitchen just fine.
PROS: two bedrooms, cooler in the jungle, breeze and rain in the evenings, decent kitchen, lovely jungle birds, lizards, tree frogs to see and hear, lunchbox/cooler and beach chairs provided, beds were relatively comfortable, plenty of dishes and supplies in kitchen including two small refrigerators.
CONS: kind of a walk uphill from the road to the cabin if you aren't totally steady on your feet or when your hands are full of groceries or luggage, but not a BIG deal for us, be prepared for bugs especially if you have lights on at night (we were visited by moths, cockroaches, mosquitos)--all things you would expect in a cabin in the jungle. You have to bring your own drinking water! We did not know this going in as we had drank cistern water at other island cabins before but they did not want us to drink it so make sure you buy a few gallons and bring it out with you to the cabin.
The wifi was there, but you could only really get the signal from the smaller cabin. All in all we enjoyed our stay, the hosts were kind and did bring us water when we got there late the first night not knowing we were supposed to. We found it comfortable, eco-friendly which we like to support, and peaceful.
We loved staying at the cottage for 10 days with our boys, ages 8 and 11. The setup allowed us to have some relaxed family time at the cabin, enjoying the natural surroundings, playing cards, even watching a movie. The location is easily accessible (via rented Jeep) to all of our old favorite beaches as well as some new favorites we discovered this trip. The kitchen was easy to use and the beds were comfy; the weather on the mountain is comfortable for sleeping. It was great to be able to turn on the row of white lights that lead up the path to light our way home if we went out for dinner.
We loved the Maho Bay camps, but enjoyed staying here more in many ways-- hot shower, functioning kitchen, and comfortable beds made this a great retreat, with a close to nature feel; loved hearing frogs and birds, as well as cicadas at night.
The only thing we'd improve is that it was difficult to get our snorkeling gear and swimsuits to dry on the clothesline-- there isn't a sunny area to hang them. Things dried better when brought inside overnight. We learned from Viki about the Laundrymat outside Cruz Bay, we brought laundry there halfway through and they washed, dried and folded our clothes for a fair rate while we had fun.
The hosts' friendly and helpful but not intrusive style was perfect for us. We'd love to come back!
Just enjoyed 10 nights in the cottage, very quiet and isolated. Kitchen was well equipped, king bed was very comfortable and cottage was very clean. No air conditioning, but only had one afternoon without a breeze just went to a beach gets very cool at night.
My husband and I stayed in the island orchid home for 6 nights. Another couple joined us for 4 of those nights. We loved that the only thing separating us from nature were screens. We loved the cool mountain breezes and although the daily temps were in the high 80's, we were very comfortable in this mountain property. Cooking in the screened, well stocked kitchen each morning and evening was such a treat. We really found this home to be exactly what we were looking for. If you want to feel like you are sleeping outside but with the comfort of comfy beds, pillows, fans, and rugs, then you will love this place. We were there mid-May and hadno issues with insects at all. Be sure to stop by daily for a smoothie from colombos, too! We will definitely stay here again if we have the chance to return.
This was a wonderful vacation. I could never have imagined such a neat place to have mydaughter,son-in-law ,son and one year grandson relax and experience nature at it's most beautiful. My husband and I said we wanted to have a vacation that we could be close to nature not tourists traps....Viki and Jay's was perfect. We enjoyed all the wildlife, but the modern conveniences were available. The house was clean and well appointed. I really want to return soon!!

We offer an ipod or mp3 connector with speakers so that you can play your own tunes. The Cottage also comes with a CD player along with a radio, DVD player and TV that you can stream movies on.
