The CarlDot is located at 809 W. Ashely Ave Folly Beach, S.C. It is a true front beach bungalow. Although Folly Island is slowly losing its village atmosphere due to development. The CarlDot Cottage is one of the few still existing on Folly's front beach. The cottage was constructed in 1938. When parking automobiles on the beach was permitted, Carlton and Dorothy were dating in 1939. They first discovered the cottage while walking on the beach. A year later in 1940, they married. They acquired their dream cottage in 1960. I was eight at that time. Folly was my summer dream. The pavilion stood with a ferris wheel and rides. The dance hall out over the ocean entertained crowds with great live band performances. Such greats were Temptations, Zodiacs, Drifters,Tams and the list goes on!
A Charleston brick fireplace, interior walls 1X12 knotty cypress(except kitchen),17 porch windows let in ocean breeze, ocean deck on sand dunes, full deck on front beach side, deck off kitchen w/gas grill.
Although the pavilion is no longer there, the cottages on front beach during that era are slowly disappearing and being replaced with huge constructions. The CarlDot still has it's charm. The main room has a beautiful Charleston brick fireplace. The interior walls in the cottage are all 1x12 knotty cypress. The two bedrooms are both large. With the constant sound of the ocean nearby, the front porch has 17 windows to let in the ocean breeze. The existing kitchen and bath were recently removed. Six pilings were added to support a huge kitchen and bath. There is a deck off the kitchen for grilling. There is a huge deck on the front of the windowed porch. Also, there is a deck on the dunes for beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The cottage has central heat and air-conditioning. All rooms have tiled floors. The CarlDot cottage sleeps six comfortably. Once you stay, you will definitely want to come back again.
