|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Sweet Wind is a West Indian style home that sits just above secluded Hurricane Hole. The villa is very private, quiet and secluded, being in the Nat. Park, but it's just 1/2 mile from Coral Bay which sports live music most nights, shopping and fine or informal dining. Just a short walk down there's a pebble beach with good snorkeling and there are 4 kayaks available to explore the 5 bays that include Hurricane Hole. I designed and built the place in the more traditional West Indian style of 3 individual buildings with large decks connecting them. The main house being the kitchen, living room, and dinning room. There is a bedroom and bathroom attached via a private deck on the West side of the main house. On the East side of the main house there is a 3rd building, housing 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with a large deck in between w/ dining table and lounge chairs. All the rooms have views, you feel like you are floating right over the ocean, and this layout makes them very private.A lot of love and care went into designing Sweet Wind, it's my own private art gallery, with hardwood floors, Purple Heart cabinets, fine dishes, antique furniture, local treasures and a bit of humor. There are two separate decks for complete privacy. One of the showers is outside, built with beautiful rock work. The bedrooms are in separate buildings,or pods which adds to the beauty and privacy. There is a lovely grotto behind the villa with an amazing stone retaining wall 9' tall and 100' long running all along the back side, that has the BBQ, orchids, flowers and herbs, and an outside shower. The villa has gates at both entrances that keep the wild donkeys out and children in. You wake up to a amazing sunrise above Hurricane Hole. This is the most protected harbor in the Caribbean, and we look out over the Coral Reef National Monument, so there is no overnight mooring allowed unless there is a storm warning. Sweet Wind is very quiet and private but just 1/2 a mile from town and you don't hear all the music and noise from Coral Bay
I think the photos say it all, Nina.
I live with my dog Lucy here in beautiful Hurricane Hole. I am a painter and a musician. I use oils, pastels and watercolours, and enjoy playing the mandolin, banjo and slide guitar. I had a salmon troller for most of my life and fished out of Sitka Alaska.
Nina Hahler purchased this house in 2001
Sweet Wind is just above Hurricane Hole in the National Park and overlooks Coral Reef National Monument. Boats can not overnight moor in the Coral Reef Nat. Monument and there are almost no other houses in view. Park trailheads are a short walk away, and It's very quiet and peaceful here, the view is amazing, and still close to town. The snorkeling and kayaking available here at Sweet Wind in Hurricane Hole make this a special place for outdoor enthusiasts.
The house is a West Indian style with hip roofs, three pods with private decks between, with greenheart floors, cyprus wainscoting and antique Caribbean furniture. The full kitchen has beautiful antique caribbean style purple heart cabinets with stone countertops. Open the back kitchen door and there is a lovely grotto, with a gas barbeque and a potted garden full of herbs herbs and spices. The villa affords great views and privacy. The views from most every room feel like you are floating over the ocean, all you see is water and Nat. park land. It is breathtaking and amazingly private. You hear no noise from the bands in Coral Bay.
We only stayed 3 nights, but would definitely recommend this as a great location to spend any length stay on St. John. Nina lives right there next door and she designed this very cool West Indies style bungalow. The house was very clean and with nice detail going into the design and décor. There was also access to snorkel and beach chairs which we put to good use, as well as kayaks down by the small beach below the house which we didn't get time to use in the adjacent cove. Located near Coral bay, this house is on the quiet side of the island, but there are a few dining options ranging in price, with our favorite being Skinny Legs for the beach bar style atmosphere and burgers, plus there are small groceries on that side. Make sure to stock up on bottled water for drinking, as with many Virgin Island properties, the tap water is via rain cisterns. Access to the amazing north shore beaches is convenient, with Maho, Cinnamon, and Trunk (get there early to park) all providing great views, calm clear water, and amazing snorkeling. It's about 30 minutes to Cruz Bay where the ferries dock, along with the plenty of shopping, dining, and car rentals.
I just left a review on another site but I wanted to make double sure I left one here as well! Coming to STJ for 24 years and we never thought to stay in Coral Bay - now, we'll never go back to the other side. I tell people we felt like Peter Pan & Wendy in Neverland ~ its thats special and you feel that wonderful spirit right when set foot inside of Sweet Wind! You couldn't want or need for anything - Nina has gone way beyond making sure your stay is absolutely unforgettable. The first night met us with a full moon and we were just mesmerized! Coming across that breathtaking view was so amazing it didn't even look real! We went to bed with a breeze coming in while we stared at the stars! We certainly didn't miss an evening out on that Deck - there is no other view!! That was our favorite part of the day - enjoying Happy Hour and waiting for the sky to begin the show! So close to the North Shore Beaches, fantastic trails, kayaking, snorkeling, good eats and Nina has a fantastic, well equipped kitchen - it had everything! The outdoor shower was wonderful after our mornings running the nearby trails. Beautiful plants & flowers with hummingbirds flitting all around - this place is very loved and you can tell. We felt so grateful to be able to stay at such a very special place and we are so hoping to get back really soon! Thank you so very much Nina!! :)
Had a great time and enjoyed our stay at the quieter end of St. Johns. Good snorkeling and interesting history of the underwater living site nearby. Some good restaurants nearby. The house is beautiful with gorgeous hardwood floors and cabinets. Kayaks available but we didn't use due to time constraints. Very quaint and clean with nice artworks displayed.
for our tropical vacation on St John. Comfortable, clean with stunning views and glorious sunrises over Huricane Hole. The property had all the accommodations and amenities that we needed to make our stay on the Island one we will always remember. The comfortable bedrooms that overlooked the Bay, the outdoor shower secluded within the grotto, private decks, beautiful flowers, and the key lime tree; that provided us fresh limes daily! Nina was so helpful before our arrival and during our stay. She provided us with all the information we needed to secure us with a safe, adventurous and fun filled vacation. The best snorkeling spots, hiking trails, and beautiful white sandy beaches. I especially enjoyed my morning kayak around the beautiful and quiet bays.
Every day was a new adventure, but it always began with a breathtaking sunrise over Hurricane Hole, and the unspoiled beauty of the Eastern end of the Island.
Each bedroom has a private bath. The living area is comfortable with the flare of Island living, and the kitchen is equipped with everything you could possibly need.
Coral Bay is just around the bend, and is bustling with activity.
We rented a 4 wheel drive vehicle, and highly recommend one. The roads are very steep and at times you could enter a 90 decree turn! But, it is all part of the adventure!
We can't wait to book our next stay, and it will be for more than a week!
Thank you Nina! We loved every minute of our stay at Sweet Winds!

Nina's home is absolutely beautiful with unforgettable views. The location could not be more private, away from the tourist scene, which was exactly what my husband and I were looking for. Your get a slice of life on the Island staying a Nina's house. The beaches are the best on the Island, and we know we went to them all. I highly recommend staying at Nina's house if your looking for something private, low key with breathtaking views.
We stayed at Sweet Wind in mid-July. We had been staying at another location that turned out to not work out for all members of our family. Luckily we contacted Nina and her place was available. Vacation saved! We stayed for five nights and enjoyed the spectacular views and wonderful breezes. We loved the set-up with two bedrooms and bathrooms in one building and the third bedroom attached to the main structure but only accessible by going outside. The outside decks and grotto behind the buildings were like one large house due to the wonderful climate.
The driveway up looks intimidating but after our experience at another location that was unpaved and required four wheel drive, this was easy peasy. We had four wheel drive but found that it was not necessary to use it on the driveway. Had the road been wet it might have been necessary. Nina even has a built-in location behind the driveway that allows you to turn your vehicle around, making the exit very easy.
We had thought that the water would be easier to get to since the water was right below. However, the access is down the road and a tight turn, not really easy to get to on foot. There are kayaks down there that you may be able to pay to use. Despite that you are in striking distance of some awesome snorkeling spots a short drive away. The variety of life in the less traveled East End was impressive. Haulover, Hansen's Bay, and the mangrove snorkeling were highlights for us.
The house is well equipped for times when you can't be out exploring. There is an extensive library with quite a variety of books. A collection of games and puzzles is in one cabinet if you need to pass the time. We found a DVD collection. The DVD player was broken but Nina offered to get another one while we were there, but it wasn't necessary for us. A nice sized flat screen with satellite TV and all of the movie channels pleased our son that was in movie withdrawal. A strong wi-fi signal kept us as in touch as we wanted to be.
The kitchen was very nice with most anything you could need.
A cooler was available to take on our island explorations.
There was a big bin of beach/snorkeling equipment including beach chairs, noodles, fins, and masks. We made very good use of the nice clothesline attached to the railings. Constant winds acted like a dryer for our swimsuits and towels.
An outdoor shower was in the grotto and was quite popular.
I am 1/2 of a mile East of Coral Bay, St John, just above Hurricane hole, a bebble beach nice for snokeling. Coral Bay has 2 grocery stores and 6 or 7 great places to eat and drink, listen to live music and sometimes dance. There are 2 National Park trail heads, and snorkel and kayak rentals within 1/2 mile. Also there are many white sand beaches that can be found within a 10 minutesfrrom thr villa.
Other Activities: Sweet Wind is in the National park and there are many trails nearby to choose from. Check out the map, enjoy.
