This unique rental property is located three miles outside of Edgartown which is a charming fishing and New England whaling village with exquisite shopping and restaurants. 'Camp Becky' is on eight acres and is a Vintage Vineyard home (no chrome and glass), with two wood burning stoves, two bedrooms, full kitchen, living-room and dinning room. There is a front and back porch which are suitable for dinning out (Webber gas grill available). You drive to the property through a 250 acre working farm, viewing horses and other livestock. The house is nestled in a shaded grove of scrub oak facing west. The land is lush with wild life and blueberries suitable for picking in July. You can bring your own boat or Kayak and access the barrier South beach with the pond on one side and the ocean on the other. Fish and swim in private paradise. What more can I say! Come and have an unforgettable vacation on Martha's Vineyard.
My brother (Michael Wild) and myself built this charming Vineyard 'Camp' in the 1960's. It has a piano, a full library of art, philosophy and history books of Martha's Vineyard. The house contains original art of many Island artist. The 10 acres is on Edgartown Great Pond and a private sandy beach with open fields and blueberry bushes. The house itself is nestled in a grove of scrub oaks with a porch facing the sunset. The property is surrounded by a 250 acre working farm and is 3 miles from the center of Edgartown(a perfect bike ride). South beach can be accessed by boat or a 1/2 mile to the public access (right fork).
The Owner purchased this house in 1940
My parents farmed what is now Herring Creek Farm in the 40's. They cultivated alfalfa, potatoes and chickens. When they sold the farm in the late 40's they keep 20 acres - this is now 'forever wild'. A rustic get-away you will enjoy with your children and pets and will never forget.
Bring your own boat (25 hp limit) or use (at your own risk) some of our Kayaks. You can access South beach and fish for blue fish and stripped bass. The pond has steamers and sometimes blue crabs. Our beach has a dock as well. There is also a fire pit, perfect for roasting marshmallows and some-mores.
This is a really special place. We loved being on the farm, kayaking to the beach, biking with the dog without traffic, sitting around the fire pit, and the night-time star-gazing. I also loved the hammock, the outdoor shower, and the gorgeous garden and grounds-- wild berries all over. The house itself feels like an artist lived here. My teen boys LOVED it, and loved Becky.
Differnet Bites for different likes....It's all about what to EXPECT of this place! If you are looking for nature, isolation and a city escape but don't prefer to pitch a tent or tow a trailer, It's exterior is deceivingly "campy", complete with Barbecue pit and wood pile. But you certainly won't be "roughing it" as inside is quite spacious, clean and comfy/cozy, complete with charming beach house decor, wood floors and walls yet has all the MODERN amenities you'll need. It's off the beaten track but not far from anything. Gorgeous farmlands and bike trails abound surround this hidden treasure. A private pond with all the boating essentials and a quirky Lady Liberty Statue to help you navigate back. The surrounding dirt roads and grassy paths are worth walking and randomly scattered with idiosyncratic trinkets and statues including a prefectly nestled Budha. There are a few other cottages in the vicinity but is very quiet and private (aside from the proximity of the owners home, which I ultimately did not find to be a hinderance as she steers clear - however, if you do manage to get to know her she's quite the character!) Bring plenty of incidentals and stock the fridge because once you settle in and plant yourself on one of the front porch chairs you might not want to get back in the car to go anywhere for a while! Enjoy your stay at Camp Becky.
