Classic Cabin in the Woods

Bedrooms 1
Space 600 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

One bedroom, one bath, sleeps 4.

Enjoy a rare vacation getaway in this rustic lakeside cottage in the woods. Nicknamed Battsford, it was built in the late 1930s, when people went to their 'camps' to find peace and quiet in natural surroundings. Nestled in the heart of 36 private acres, it is full of period charm, with a fieldstone fireplace and a front porch for relaxing and taking in the spectacular Belknap Mountains across Lake Winnipesaukee. A little beach makes wading or launching canoes/kayaks easy, and you can fish off the jetty. One dock slip for a small motor/sail boat is available for an additional fee. Private tennis court recently refinished. This is the perfect spot for an outdoorsy couple looking for a romantic interlude or a family wanting to spend old-fashioned summer time with the kids.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A guest wrote to me, after unsuccessfully trying to post review, so I am posting it here for her:

Staying at Battsford makes your imagination run wild. What must it have been like in a simpler time with few amenities (that you realize are unnecessary), unplugged days, awakening by loons vs. alarms. Views of the lake that change several times a day, thunderstorms where you can watch the storm move from Meredith to your front porch in a matter of minutes. If you are looking quiet relaxation and beauty, look no further!

This cabin, built c. 1940, is a rustic, secluded treasure 50 feet from the shore. The stone fireplace showcases the masonry of the period, and draws extremely well for a bright, warm fire. Kitchen/bath facilities are minimal, but adequate. Outdoor grilling, either on the charcoal grill or the wood stove, along with beautiful views and sunsets make evening dining a special treat. Kayaks available on request.

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

In the woods, right on the incredibly clean and clear Lake Winnepesaukie. Very comfy, clean, adequately equipped cabin. Super comfortable beds. Charming and helpful proprietors. 2 single person kayaks for our use. Nice tennis court.

Perfect lake retreat.

Sweet little cabin on the water

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our week at Battsford, and if you enjoy simplicity and peace, this is the place for you. It's situated way, way off the paved road -- you will not hear a single car and it's a good choice for kids and dogs. The cabin itself is roughly 35' from the water and since the lake is fairly wide at that point, most power boats pass by far from shore. It's part of a family compound on 36 acres but you really can't see the other 4 cottages b/c there are so much woods between. While the lake entry from the granite steps in front of the place is rocky, the owner will graciously encourage you to use the small sand beach next door that has a huge sandy swimming area that drops off very gradually. The tennis courts are well-cared for and there is a large mowed field good for kids to run around on or dogs to play (again, far from the road). Also, a previous reviewer mentioned lake water for the cabin but it turns out that's not the case now, they have a well. The owner is lovely, caring, and will make you feel very much at home.

Excellent getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here the week of July 15-22, 2017, for our 25th anniversary. It is a beautiful location and easy to get to. Wonderful sunsets and a very nice, simple cottage layout. Steps down to the water right behind and a dock with boat slips is available. Cost is very reasonable compared to some other similar locations that are marketing to folks who want a lot of amenities more like a hotel. The owners were very easy to work with, and the communication at all phases was efficient and responsive. We are already looking at possibly returning here next year!

Comfortable cottage walking distance to the lake.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was in very good shape considering its' age. I loved how close it was to the lake. The fire pit was a hit. I had brought my own quilt and was glad because it was nice and bright unlike the gray bedspread that was on the bed upon arrival. The bedroom is roomy and we loved all the windows. The house was well built. Met some of the family so got some of the history, which was fascinating.

Suggestions, please for future guests have wifi available, and a TV, it should be their prerogative to watch or not watch the TV. We were concerned about the water, washing dishes with lake water, is that safe? I felt that the kitchen and the bathroom should be updated. Other than that, we had a lovely time. It is a great spot and I had a wonderful book, that came in handy during the rainy time. Lastly, it was a bit challenging for me, 65 getting into the water, but once there the water was lovely. Use of the kayaks was a treat, saw a loon, doe and a fox while we were there. The view was fantastic.
