TURTLE HUT I

Now you've found your perfect vacation spot... 'Hale Honu' or 'Turtle Hut,' aptly named for the endangered hawksbill turtles nestling along our black sand beach, offers a tranquil haven to human travelers, too! Perched on a bluff with Mauna Loa Volcano as its background and the soft blue waters of the Pacific as its foreground, Sea Mountain welcomes visitors seeking 'Old Hawaii' at its best.

Just browse through our former Guest Reviews Tab and you'll see we have earned more than triple the number of FIVE STAR ratings than any other listing in our resort, or our district! There are many reasons why:

The Turtle Huts have everything you're looking for in your 'dream' Hawaiian vacation: outstanding LOCATION, fantastic AMENITIES and surprising affordability for a top-rated resort in paradise! Recent resort upgrades include high speed internet and wi-Fi, premium and unlimited on-demand TV programming and local and long distance telephone.

Serene...peaceful...secluded...oasis...historic...natural.... are apt descriptors for this magnificent region. The Turtle Hut's location in the more secluded and peaceful section of the resort is an added asset, and its VIEW of the OCEAN is what brings our guests back, year after year. We are thrilled to have earned more than triple the number of FIVE STAR ratings from our guests than any other property in our resort, and we work hard to achieve that record.

We are ideally located between Kailua-Kona and Hilo, making day trips to either side of the island's attractions easy! We're also only a short half hour drive to Volcanoes National Park and its awesome eruption shows, Turtle Hut overlooks the magnificent Pacific Ocean AND the 18th Green and Fairway of Sea Mountain's Par 72 Golf Course. Can you believe 18 holes of golf with your cart for only $25.00?! with plenty of whale-watching possibilities thrown in for free! A 30 minute drive and a short hike takes you to Papakolea, our incredible GREEN Sands Beach, or tour nearby Kula Kai Caverns in Ocean View, South Point, Wood Valley? Hike the ancient Ala Kahakai Trail fronting our resort and beyond to discover petroglyphys and heiaus dating back to pre-contact times...The possibilities nearby are endless.

Bask in our glorious tradewinds-cooled sunshine or under our spectacular star-filled night sky! Our beach has been consistently rated among the most exotic, natural beaches in the world by beach afficianados, so the unit is equipped with great beach chairs and mats, umbrella, and basic snorkel sets.

Thoughtfully furnished and equipped with a selection of books and music to enjoy from the lounges on your lanai! and, of course, a blender awaits your mai tai or cocktail of choice.

Nearby villages of Volcano, Pahala, Na'alehu and Ocean View offer 'local style' culture as well as conveniences such as grocery stores, gas stations, banks, restaurants, hair salons, nail and facial aestheticians, massage therapists, and on Wed. and Saturdays, wonderful Farmers Markets with amazing arrays of fresh veggies, fruits, local Ka'u coffees and treasures from local artists and craftspeople. When in doubt where to eat?, just browse through the local restaurants list you'll find in the condo! for up to 21 great choices nearby, rated by travellers like you, and filled with helpful information.

Perhaps most importantly, when you rent from us, you are renting from TRUE, local owners, NOT from a property management business or out-of-state owners with little knowledge of the area or concern about your experience! Our guests receive concierge-style service from us, including recommendations on restaurants, activities and little-known 'not-to-miss!' places. You'll never receive this level of aloha from out-of-state owners or rental businesses!

Need additional room for family members joining you? Look up 'Turtle Hut II'now available for booking. Same great resort and amenities, offering additional space. Look up listing #251908!

About Barbara Rushton

I believe that my move to Hawaii in 1997 is a perfect example of why the Big Island is referred to as the 'Healing Island'. Sure, I had fallen in love with Hawaii ever since my first vacation here in the '80s, but I was far from financially ready to make the move until pow! my life blew up one insane day, and the decision to move was made for me! And so it was, within 22 days, I resigned from my position as a police administrator, divorced, and hopped a plane bound for Kailua-Kona, Hawaii with my 80 year old mother. Why Hawaii? It was the only place on earth where I had always felt completely happy and healthy and where I knew I would be safe to begin a new life.

It is often said that the Mana, or 'Spirit', of this island calls out to those whose hearts need to heal. I know now that it was not a coincidence that I was called here or that I found an old coffee plantation house for sale, next to the most famous 'place of refuge' on the island, Puuhonua O Honaunau.

With pennies down, we bought it and learned how to grow and roast coffee! and hung macadamia nuts to dry in our old panty hose! Eventually, we sold that wonderful place for such a profit that you may now guess the rest of this story: yes! that first humble blessing, our place of refuge, sold for an amount large enough to provide not only for our next home, but also for the purchase of this beautiful condo at Punalu'u! And now I am blessed to offer a haven and oasis to travellers and visitors from all over the world, whether weary from life and needing to heal, as I was; or those coming to explore and enjoy the wonders of Hawaii! I still pinch myself often, to be sure this is all real!

Barbara Rushton purchased this condo in 2003

Why Barbara Rushton chose Ka'u District

I first saw Colony One at Sea Mountain way back in the '80s when we stopped at the Black Sand Beach on a tour bus, and I vowed then that I would find a way to stay there on my very next trip to the islands. Sea Mountain is unique, not only to the Big Isle, but truly is not to be found anywhere else in the entire island chain! Not a ticky-tacky high rise, this small complex sits on a bluff like a quaint Polynesian Village might have, with the calm, turquoise Pacific Ocean at its foreground and the dark green forestland of Mauna Loa Volcano as its background. I can't imagine a more perfect location for a vacation, as we're located half-way between the 'big' towns of Kona and Hilo, and only a 30 minute drive to the Volcanoes National Park. There's plenty to do without ever leaving the resort, as well! With our own magnificent black sand beach, Sea Mountain Golf Course, a beautiful fresh water pool and a volcano-style spa, tennis courts, tropical gardens and manicured lawns to enjoy, I jumped at the first possible chance to purchase one that I could afford, in 2003. I've had nothing but positive experiences managing the rentals myself, and I've met people from all over the world! I've made enough $$ in the last couple of years to offer free stays to returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, and have a few more scheduled this year. Life just doesn't get any better than this! Please come and find out for yourself!

What makes this condo unique

The perfect day for me while staying at the Turtle Hut myself always begins with watching the SUN-RISE out of the ocean with a freshly brewed cup of local coffee, right on my lanai! Remember, we're located on the windward coast, so its the sunrise that lights up the sky with every glorious color you can imagine, and I promise you'll re-define 'pink' and 'orange' and 'red' and try to find new ways to define those desciptors. I always have great company on the lanai, as our neighborhood cardinals and finch families will be waiting for me --sometimes chirping their impatience from atop the chairs! -- calling for their pieces of fruit and nuts! We've given them all names, down to the smallest male yellow finch with a broken left foot, who we call - you guessed it: 'Lefty'. When I'm lucky enough to have finished most of a papaya from the garden here, I usually take off for a good, long walk. There are endless walking or hiking choices here, depending on your conditioning, time and interests. One of my guests called me one day so thrilled that he had found waterfalls! on his hike during a heavy rain!

The perfect day's end always is spent here in our magnificent volcano-style spa. It's huge! and the perfect place to un-wind from a long day while gazing at unbelievably clear night skies. One night, I counted seven falling stars!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Turtle Hut lives up to every great review and more! We thoroughly enjoyed the quiet and natural beauty in which we have slept so delightfully for five nights. This paradise is so different from the concrete jungle where we currently reside.

Outstanding!!

What a fabulous time my husband and I had on our Hawaiian vacation and a large part of that is due to our outstanding accommodations. Turtle Hut I was the perfect place for us. Barb does such an excellent job with amenities and decorations: everything from the beautiful, soft, coordinating towels to the chilled glasses in the freezer, Barb, you thought of everything! I, personally, loved the European style walk-in shower!! The views of the ocean and the golf course (which had very few golfers on it, which was nice for us) were beautiful. I even saw a whale from our lanai one day!! Such a nice short walk to the Black Sand Beach!! Barb even texted us one day to remind us of the farmer's market in Naalehu.....what a nice personal touch : ) Turtle Hut 1 was such a nice "home base" for us as we ventured off to the different parts of the island each day. I will most certainly tell people about this gem of a place! Thank you again, Barb, we will hopefully be back!!

Owner's Response: Aloha, dearly Penny, and ..... WOW ! Finding your review, so beautifully worded with so many lovely compliments, MORE than makes up for all the hard work our team does to prepare and present a welcoming place for our guests! With your permission? I'm going to ask VRBO to place your review to the "Featured Review" position at the very top, because without a doubt, it's the very best we've EVER received! In fact, I'm going to copy it and show it also at the start of my listing page; I'm sure we attract prospective guests with our "More 5 Star Ratings" Banner, and what better example of a 5 Star Rating could be found, than yours?? From the bottom of our hearts, Penny, mahalo nui loa for taking time from your busy life back in the real world to write and send such a fabulous summary of your stay! PLEASE come back soon! Malama pono, pumehana, a hui hou, (take good care of yourself, dear friend, until we meet again), and Away's with aloha, Barb

Turtle Hut 1 was amazing.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Turtle Hut 1. The place had everything we needed and more. It's the little extras that made such a difference. Barbara answered all the questions I had and gave some very good pointers. That's what made our time there so AMAZING!

My favourite stay!

  • 5 of 5

First off I want to review VRBO, the app was super handy and I found this website very easy to follow! Second Barb, Barb was so kind and helpful and easy to reach. The place was set up so nicely for us and when I messaged her with questions not only did she answer me but she gave me a list of suggestions for what to do in the area! Third The Turtle Hut, it is so cute! My boyfriend and I loved being out in the country and we felt that the pictures on here don't do justice for how up to date and well kept it is! We also arrived at night and closed all the curtains and didn't know what the view/back yard looked like until morning! So beautiful and so nice to have the grass in the back. The views are outstanding. Having access to the pool and hot tub was also nice and being so close to the black sand beach was amazing. The kitchen was perfectly stocked with everything we could need. The bathroom was so nice and fully stoked, the living room was great, and the bed. That bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on! We did a ton of adventures while out that way and every night it was a treat to crawl into that bed! We did manage to find, on our first night, a huge spider under the sink, so keep in mind it is the first floor in the country. But we just, my boyfriend just, moved him outside. We enjoyed using all of the snorkel and swim equipment provided as well! After our stay here we went to Kona for a night and then we went to Oahu for 5 nights and 3 years ago I went to Maui and out of all 4 Hawaii rentals the Turtle Hut is by FAR my favourite. We want to come back!! Thank you Barb for a wonderful stay and a wonderful start to our vacation. Also, to future renters ,check out the green sand beach, the volcano, and mostly a night snorkel with Mantas!!! Mahalo!

Nice condo community. Great location.

  • 4 of 5

Very nice condo community. Turtle Hut was clean and comfortable. Beautiful view. Great customer service (welcoming email, etc.) Perfect location for several not-to-be missed spots: South Point (15 min drive) - beautiful; Green Sand Beach (15 min drive) - awesome -- highly recommend paying locals to 4x4 drive you 3 miles from parking lot to beach; Black Sand beach (just a 5 min walk from condo) - my favorite! Enjoyed a cup of coffee in the mornings with the turtles! Volcano National Park (30 min drive). Lava Rock Cafe (Volcano Village - very good food). Punalu'u Bake Shop (excellent bread, pastry & food). Everyone we met (local or visitors) was great! Thank you!! Stayed June 16-19, 2016

Beautiful, peaceful stay

  • 5 of 5

What a gem! A lovely, clean, comfortable, private home. Barbara has included many, many extras that made our stay easier and more convenient. She put a lot of effort into making our vacation wonderful. All the information she sent us was so useful. We used the beach towels, chairs and especially the insulated cold bag for our picnics. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, even candles for a candle light dinner on the lanai! The neighbors were friendly and the black sand beach minutes down the street. Turtle watching was excellent! It was our base as we explored Volcano National Park and snorkeled at several different beaches in Kona and Hilo. We enjoyed visiting all the National Historic Sites on the Kona side of the island. We loved the peaceful mornings on the lanai, watching the waves and geckos and listening to the birds. We recommend this property to everyone, but selfishly hope it is available for our next visit!
