|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
High above sleepy Coral Bay on Bordeaux Mountain sits the villa Skyflower and Skyflower Suite. The panoramic views are truly spectacular, looking out over the British Virgins, St. John's East End, and Coral Bay itself.
The Suite is an attractive, very private apartment on the lower level of the house, accessed by an outdoor staircase and a 90' mahogany deck. There is a comfortable living room with a small kitchen and dining counter, and a lovely bedroom with twin beds that are usually made up as a king. An attractive bath opens out to a tiled and private garden shower.
The owners live upstairs and are available for 'what to do and where to go' ideas should you need them.
The road up the mountain from Coral Bay is paved and the driveway is level with an easy parking area.
My wife and I live in Maine most of the year, and move to our house on St. John for four of the winter months. We enjoy being your 'on site hosts' during your stay in Skyflower Suite. We will interact with you as much as you like, or will leave you to yourselves during your stay.
Jan Hoffman purchased this apartment in 2007
The villa is set 1000 feet up and looks out over Coral Bay and surrounding islands. The view is remarkable. Constant cooling breezes provide natural air conditioning. Very private and quiet, but only five minutes from shops, restaurants, and grocery stores, and 15 minutes from beautiful beaches.
Skyflower Suite provides one of the most spectacular views in the Caribbean. It is peaceful, cozy, welcoming, and beautifully appointed. The owners pay careful attention to detail on the property, inside and out. Breezes are continual, coming in as easterly trade winds. The house was designed and built by the owners specifically for the site, so there are views from every room. Expansive decks allow plenty of room for outdoor sitting and soaking up the view. You'll want to take your morning coffee on the deck you watch the sun rise. You'll enjoy snorkeling, reading a good book on one of the many beaches, or hiking on St. John's extensive trail system. There are nearby fun places to grab a bite of lunch, or have an delicious, romantic dinner in the evening. You might want to try an afternoon siesta in the comfortable bedroom, or whip up a delicious rum punch or pina colada to enjoy on your deck. There are always bands playing at the local restaurants. Best of all, you'll want to come 'home' to this glorious spot at the end of each day!
Well, it is day one of Skyflower withdrawal and we are doing as good as can be expected for leaving behind paradise for home in the midwest! We are expecting our first baby this year, so our focus for this vacation was the perfect, romantic week to celebrate our last months as a two person family. A lot of research went into finding our paradise, and we cannot believe how beyond expectations this trip was for us.
Pictures and words cannot even begin to express the true beauty of the Skyflower property. It is so much more than what is presented in this listing (everything listed is completely accurate). The minute we exited our jeep and headed down the stairs to Skyflower Suite, we knew we had found something special. No matter where we went on the island, nothing rivaled the view right outside our door from the expansive deck. But the view is not limited to breakfasts with Jan's delicious homemade banana muffins with tea or reading out on the deck - the view can be seen from the living area, kitchen, outdoor shower, and even lying in the comfortable king sized bed. There is nothing like waking up and looking out the door to see a beautiful sunrise over the surrounding islands.
To say Bill and Jan were gracious hosts is an understatement. I am so glad our time in St. John overlapped with the time they spend on the island. Besides being a wealth of knowledge for St. John, they are such genuine and nice people. Our stay would not have been as perfect as it was without their guidance to the best beaches, restaurants, etc., and we thoroughly enjoyed conversations with them on their deck. They hosted a cocktail hour with us before dinner one night, which was great. They even had a small gift for us (the most adorable sea turtle onesie for our future daughter)!
We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone considering a trip to the Coral Bay side of St. John. For first timers like us, do not let the advice of "there's not as much to do on the Coral Bay side" fool you. We ate at a different restaurant every night, there is a small plaza with shops, restaurants, and a grocery store right at the bottom of the street from the property and many other attractions on the east side of the island are only a 10-15 minute drive. We did not return to the Cruz Bay side until it was (sadly)P time to leave.
Thank you so much Bill and Jan for a wonderful experience! We are truly grateful for everything and hope to see you again in the future!
Our week long stay at Skyflower was truly a gift from owners, Jan and Bill. We had a wonderful week and a lot of it was due to coming "home" each day to this beautiful spot.
Skyflower suite is the bottom of a two bedroom villa. During the winter the owners are using the main part of the villa and rent out the suite. First let me say that they are very nice people who seem to genuinely enjoy meeting their tenants. That being said - they are not at all intrusive, but, in fact are very helpful. During the rest of the year the entire villa is for rent. We did get a tour of the rest of the villa and it is very nicely done.
The best part of our unit is the very long, covered deck, which is totally private from everything else. We ate out there, rested and read, and had plenty of space to dry out our wetsuits and bathing suits, etc. on lines provided. The view from this deck is one of the most all encompassing that I have seen. All of the British virgins were staring back at us. Absolutely gorgeous. We like to play hard during the day, but coming back to this was a highlight!
We had a living room with small kitchen. Very comfortable furniture, TV we never used, a wall fan, books, board games, etc. The decorating was lovely with a lot of attention to detail and everything looked fresh. There was a microwave, toaster, stove and plenty of utensils, etc. The refrigerator is only apartment size which was a challenge for us, but we managed. Also the owners told us we could use any frig space we needed upstairs and also their ice maker. We didn't end up doing that, but it was nice to have the option.
Bedroom was King size (could be 2 twins). Very comfortable. Ceiling fan. We would wake up with the sun and just look out our slider at the sun rise. One big perk is the huge "garden" shower right out the door of the bathroom. Still very private from the deck but with an awesome view and the same breezes. We never had a need for A/C.
The road up is 108 and was only a 5 minute PAVED drive from the Aqua Bistro area. The entry to the driveway was level. I would recommend this highly to anyone. We hope to go back.
And be sure to eat Jan's special muffins while they are fresh! Awesome.
The photos provided for Skyflower are excellent. The suite was even better than expected.
Our hosts, Jan & Bill, were very welcoming and at the same time respectful of our privacy.
The deck is very private and goes on forever with, we're sure, the best view on the island.
A number of restaurants are very close, as well as a nice little grocery store five minutes from the house. We enjoyed hiking to many beautiful beaches that are less crowded than the west side of the island. I don't think you could go wrong renting Skyflower Suite.
What we read about in the description and reviews and saw in pics when choosing to book this property proved to be accurate, although in reality not fully representative of our experience, which turned out to be far better than our expectations. When you first see the panoramic view of the islands and sea from this mountain side, it takes your breath away. And the great thing is that the thrill of that view never diminishes because it is ever changing in some way, and you get a slightly different perspective from the deck, or the living area, the bedroom, and even the shower. The living space is immaculate, nicely furnished, and a very comfortable bed invites restful sleep, etc. Plus there are so many special touches such as fresh flowers, original art, refreshments and treats upon arrival that make this a wonderfully welcoming place.
We been to St. John 7 or 8 times now, and have always preferred staying on the Coral Bay end of the island, but this spot on the mountain above Coral Bay was not only the most beautiful and comfortable of the accommodations that we've had, but turned out really to be the most convenient for getting to all the beaches where we wanted to snorkel, and to the nice mix of restaurants that are there. After our first trip up the mountain road led by our host, we soon realized that we made the right choice.
Our host and hostess, who are the property owners and were in the upstairs section, surely must be counted among the most gracious, knowledgeable, helpful, and interesting folk that you could ever hope to meet. While careful to always respect our privacy and solitude, they were quick to respond to any of our requests and questions. And when a couple of unexpected medical issues developed for us, it was especially reassuring to have their support and suggestions which salvaged what would otherwise have been frustrating and disappointing intrusions into our days in paradise.
All in all, our experience in this special place was better than we could have dreamed it could be, and fond memories of it will fill our actual dreams for many days and night to come.
Our second visit to St. John proved to be far superior to our first primarily due to the thoughtful planning of this beautiful villa and the warm, welcoming, ever-helpful hosts, Jan and Bill.
There are occasions where images online are more attractive than the real thing... For Skyflower this proves to be untrue. Yes, the pictures look very impressive on the website but actually driving into the property firsthand is simply breathtaking. The villa is incredibly bright and inviting, very well stocked, and in immaculate condition. We appreciated the "welcome" beverages - beer and rum - after a long day of travel & the delicious homemade muffins were a tasty breakfast treat, as well!
Sleeping in the bedroom with the doors wide open (very tight fitting screens!) listening to the frogs and crickets, with cooling breezes blowing all night was heavenly.
We were initially concerned that staying in Coral Bay versus Cruz Bay would prove to be more challenging because there may be fewer appealing dining options, or grocery stores but we were proven wrong. There are a surprisingly large number of very good dining options on that side of the island. Bill and Jan will be happy to give you advice, and if they aren't available during your stay just read the reviews in the Guest Comment book. There are at least 3 different small grocery stores in or very near Coral Bay (one open until 10pm), so a late arrival does not mean you need to stop in Cruz Bay on the way to the villa. Also, they have provided maps, guides, and books (including St. John Off the Beaten Path, which I was going to buy prior to our trip) to help plan any excursion on the island- be it hiking or snorkeling.
For our next visit to St. John we will definitely plan our trip based on availability of this fantastic villa!
I am really not sure how to begin my immense praise about this property. Every aspect of our stay was truly special. Arriving at Skyflower Suite is a jaw dropping experience, truly a million dollar view. There were several days that we actually had to talk ourselves into leaving the deck and exploring the island! Skyflower suite is much more than a million dollar view however. We were met by Bill upon our arrival in Coral Bay, and led up the paved road to the beautifully landscaped Skyflower property. Entering the suite, we were greeted by fresh cut flowers, creatively folded towels and tissue, local artwork, and personalized greetings in the form of a welcome letter and framed welcome note. On top of that, Jan had put together a basket that included homemade banana-coconut muffins, local rum, the current issue of the island newspaper, guidebooks, and a binder full of information on restaurants, sailing, etc. So many details are so perfectly attended to at this home! The huge mahogony deck is a thing of beauty, the bed was more comfortable than mine at home (which I love) the kitchen was fully stocked, and the bathroom modern and beautiful. To top it all off there is an amazing outdoor tiled shower so you can enjoy the view and breeze while you wash off the day's sand!! Probably the most special thing that Skyflower offers are the people. Bill and Jan were truly perfect hosts, around when needed but absent unless you sought them out. One of my main concerns in renting this property was privacy, skyflower delivers this too! I always felt like we had the place to ourselves! It was so nice to have Bill and Jan around to offer restaurant suggestions, directions and experience, as it had been 12 years since my last visit to St. John. They were incredibly gracious and one of greatest memories of our vacation will always be the time we spent getting to know our hosts!! I already knew St. John was a special place and I am so happy to have found a rental property worthy of the my high expectations of paradise. Skyflower delivers on every level! Book it if you can!! Thank you Bill and Jan for providing a home for our greatest vacation ever!
