One of the many things that sets our Casa del Rayo Verde apart, besides the panoramic vistas and truly beautiful artisan-crafted interiors, is its easy access to both the beach and to town, though some stairs are involved to reach the pool and then the beach. Upon arrival, one enters the front door which is right next to a private parking spot at the level of the road with no steep driveway or stairs to negotiate. The large private terrace with a huge stone table is the perfect place to enjoy meals and lounge throughout the day and night. The walk to the beach is roughly ten minutes, depending on your pace, down some stairs to the pool, along a dirt road, another set stairs....and you are there, no traffic or busy road to cross. All along the beach, there are many small restaurants to choose from. A cab can be at the front door within five minutes after calling and the drive into town is not much more than five minutes. There are several dining choices along the road to town including an acclaimed pizza parlor, several cliff-side restaurants overlooking the bay and many more in all price categories once you are in town. A list of our dining recommendations is provided and spans the simple to the sublime. NOTE: While most of our renters have found our beach very accessible by foot, we don't recommend our place to anyone who is not sure-footed and/or able to manage some stairs. Like most homes with spectacular views in this hilly area, stairs and sometimes steep driveways are a given; precise details with photos of our stairs is happily provided upon request.
On the grounds, a large shared pool invites swimming laps or enjoying the sun, and there is a 24-hour presence of either maintenance or security staff. The home is stocked with all the amenities you might need to include wi-fi, satellite television (40' Samsung flatscreen), BluRay DVD player, stereo and highly efficient air conditioners in every room. The kitchen is well supplied for cooking with a pro-level stainless steel range and serving from a lovely assortment of talavera dishes and handblown glassware. Each of the three individually decorated bedrooms has a writing desk and private en suite bathroom to provide those traveling in a group a comfortable place to retreat. A trusted housekeeper will keep you feeling pampered by thoroughly attending to chores three days a week. She can shop and cook for you as an optional service by arrangement and comes highly recommended by us and others.
Perched on a rocky bluff above the gorgeous La Ropa beach, this three-bedroom, split-level 1900 square foot space, including the large terrace, is at the top level of a small condominium community, affording lots of privacy and unique views, with two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. Upon purchase in 1999, it was largely a blank, white canvas inside but with stunning vistas from the windows and private terrace. As busy working people, we searched for someone locally with the integrity as well as artistic sensibility to transform this big shell into something we could dream about when we were away from it and feel captivated by when we were present. That person turned out to be Nicole Dugal, a designer of Canadian origin who had done the interiors of Casa Que Canta (an award winning local boutique hotel) and other beautiful homes in the area. We feared she would find the project too small to be of interest but as it turned out, her main criterion was having 'room to play'. Our criteria were keeping it simple, local, handmade where possible, and Mexican through-and-through. This much was accomplished and more. Over the years, we've added and adapted to keep it updated and even more appealing. In its own way, Casa del Rayo Verde has become our own 'casa que canta' (house that sings). It's about a kind of a feeling you get when you enter, and it's about a kind of dreaming that stays with you long after you leave.
Casa del Rayo Verde was named after an optical phenomenon called the green flash (rayo verde) which can occur shortly after sunsets or before sunrises, when a green spot or line along the horizon may be visible just above the sun for a second or two. Out on the spacious terrace, the many displays of nature's artistry can be appreciated from several vantage points offered by comfortable seating or lounging areas. Here you will find your own appreciation for the changing subtleties of light from sunrise to sunset with starry nights included. We invite you to experience the special magic that emanates from this setting!
My husband and I met in Houston, Texas in 1980 and traveled that same year for the first time to Zihuatanejo. Over the next twenty years, we returned intermittently even after relocating to Manhattan where professional commitments, friends and a community keep us very engaged. Our passions include travel, mostly to Mexico, seeing good films on the large screen, cooking and enjoying food from many different cuisines while 'trying' to stay fit! We took up cycling a few years ago and find it the most fun way of getting a workout while also enjoying nature and the outdoors. We were thrilled to discover we could keep our cycling routine while in Zihuatanejo by heading over to Ixtapa early in the mornings, renting a bike and taking the well maintained off-road path through an ecological park that leads to Playa Linda.
Mona Felts purchased this condo in 1999
By returning many times over a period of years, even as the area started to grow and become more developed, we were always met with an attitude of warmth and welcoming by the local people. The magic of the surroundings with its unique blend of the tropics, the beach and the mountains never ceased to inspire awe and an immediate feeling of tranquility. We were also astonished that the town government kept its promise to not allow high-rises and to keep the views and the beach open to all the people. While there is more of a presence of North Americans visiting as tourists or pursuing their dreams of acquiring an oceanfront home in Mexico, Zihuatanejo remains essentially a Mexican town. It boasts a thriving mercado which spills out from the official municipal market into the streets, with teeming piles of tropical fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, carne of all kinds, along with small fondas transforming these raw ingredients into freshly prepared local specialties along with as many handmade tortillas as you can eat. The Zocalo (town plaza) is centered around a basketball court right in front of the town beach where most evenings one can stroll, indulge in delicious street foods and watch whatever game of volleyball or basketball is being played. Today with the added conveniences of a large American-style supermarket, a wider array of dining establishments and small venues to hear live music, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy one's time.
After a couple of years of looking and considering different options, in 1999 we finally found the place that met all our requirements. The most important was having a view of the water and being able to access it and the beach comfortably by foot. Perhaps equally importantly, we wanted a large enough private terrace or deck that would allow us to enjoy being outdoors as much as possible, given the cold winters here in the Northeast that keep us wrapped up and indoors so many months of the year. What we got in addition to all that was a condominium that feels more like a house, very private, at the top of the complex with views not only of the one of the most beautiful Bays on the Pacific, with its pristine mile-long beach, but also an unobstructed view of the foothills of the Southern Sierra Mountain Range. Not only can we walk down to La Ropa beach, we can extend our workout by taking the fork in the road and hiking another 20 minutes over some large rocks to reach Las Gatas beach, a uniquely beautiful stretch of white sand with even more protected waters for swimming and snorkeling. As at La Ropa beach, the string of beachfront restaurants with palapas or umbrellas invite you to spend the day, sipping cold drinks and enjoying a lunch of fresh fish. If you're not up for hiking back the same way you came, you can take a small water taxi which will bring you across the bay to the municipal pier. From there you can wander around the town before hopping a cab for the ride home.
Stayed at Mona's Casa from Dec 28/16 - Jan 6/17. There was was 3 of us but the casa can easily accommodate 3 couple comfortably.
It was exactly as described, We could not have stayed any where nicer. Lots of room great amenities and the view from the terrace was spectacular!
Olga was there to tidy up for us every other day as we had requested.
The casa is a short 5 minute down hill walk to la Ropa beach and consequently a steep climb back but easily done and relaxed pace. Lots of restaurants with in walking distance.
I would highly recommend this condo to anyone and I look fwd to returning in the near future!
My family of 5, kids (10, 13,15) spent 10 days over Christmas in this wonderful Casa. Easy to find, 20 minutes or so from the airport that you would never know is there until you need to fly back out of it, this place is everything others have said it is. Walking in, the place feels like home. From the comfortable Zapotec bedspreads to the masks on the living room wall, the decor and detail here allow you to instantly sink into the place you are in. So comfortable in fact that on a couple of nights I fell asleep on one of the comfy lounge chairs on the patio above the lights of Zihuatanejo and below a billion stars. First night I rolled back into the Casa at about 4AM but 2nd time kids had locked me out thinking I was upstairs and I stayed till 8:30. No bugs, light breeze, I doubled up the cushion from the neighboring lounge chair and slept peacefully, only waking as the sun came up from behind the hills to show the procession of the fishermen's pangas coming back into the bay with their night's catch. This particular night I was comforted knowing Jesus was on duty keeping watch over Condominimos Punta Marina. He and the rest of the staff were excellent people. Olga is a gem. We found her to be warm and very helpful. Our Spanish is shamefully limited but our oldest daughter has a few years of study. She and Olga would get together and make sure we all had the important details of comings and goings down. I also can't say enough positive things about the owner of this fine Casa. When you find such a quality place and people you know the owner's are good folks who care. Mona was so helpful, we practically received her own version of a Lonely Planet guide to the area and it was indespensible. We had some unbelievable travel snarls getting down to Zihua having hit an ice storm on the runway and many delays, missed flights, lost bags, sleeping on floors at airport, etc. Mona was always in reach and made our awkward, late arrival seamless so we were able to relax right away. This is a great place to visit. The food is epic. Olga's take on tirritas and garlic shrimp is not to be missed. Barra de Potosi is a dream. Follow Mona's direction on where to go and what to eat, you won't be disappointed. La Graviota just down the hill at the beach (fish tacos) and Patty's Mar y Mar down the beach were favorites. Carmalita's in town is a must try. Pool is nice to cool down, beach literally a 5 minute walk. We miss this place and will return
This was just what we needed . A beautiful home, a short walk to the beach yet set back away from the bustle of the tourists. The swimming pool on the property was perfect for my morning laps . The decor of the home is curated with an amazing eye to detail and the front terrace is the perfect place to relax in the evening. The staff was helpful and even had Olga the house keeper make us a traditional Mexican lunch. We took some of the proprietresses suggestions for restaurants and excursions and they were just as expected, wonderful! Can't wait to come back.

My family and I spent 2 weeks at this beautiful condo. We had a great time. The condo is walking distance from Playa La Ropa and tons of delicious restaurants and a quick drive to the town square and grocery store. If you're looking for a picture perfect vacation, this is the condo for you. The views from the patio are absolutely breathtaking! There is convenient covered parking right outside of the front door. The place is beautifully furnished, with everything you could need for a comfortable and relaxing vacation. The a/c in the rooms worked very well and cooled us down quickly after a hot day at the beach. Olga was at the condo every two days. She provided us with fresh sheets and towels. Freddie and Alvaro are the guards of the grounds. They are both super friendly and know everything about the town. We once got a flat tire and Alvaro drove with us to the nearest tire shop and helped with the repair. Mona is quick to respond to any question you might have. She made booking our stay pain free and super easy. I would definitely recommend this condo to any of my friends. It's the perfect place to have your next vacation!
We had a family reunion and stayed at this beautiful condo above La Ropa beach...it exceeded our expectations...every detail was taken care of...and the detail to design and decorating was just wonderful and the views were breathtaking...every morning my husband and I would walk to the beach, one of our favorites, and marvel at the beauty of this area...Olga came every two days to clean, freshen the bedding and delivery new towels...she also cooked for us and we felt totally pampered by the experience...one family member was not able to negotiate the stairs to the pool and beach but we had rented a car and there was no problem taking them to both areas...restaurants abound and Zihuatanejo is so charming we can't wait to return...thanks Mona for all your efforts to make our stay memorable.
Easy day trips to less developed pristine beaches with lagoon kayaking or surfing, a wildlife preserve (El Refugio dePotosi), bike rental with safe cycling routes, fishing/snorkeling trips and the colonial jewel of Patzcuro with a new highway which connects you by car or bus in just 3 1/2 hours.
